MTB 2:17:00 [4] 22.6 mi (9.9 mph) +2488ft
ahr:116 max:150 weight:150.2lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge: this ride is dedicated to Dan Fealk. My plan for my fifth MTB ride of the week was to take it easy. Shortly after I turned around part way down the north side of GR, I heard two riders chatting behind me as I started the climb to the Water Tower loop. Dan's comment on yesterday's ride popped into my head-was I going to be passed? As usual, my first thought was "who cares," but as always I changed my thinking. Hmmm...the end of the conversation was a sign that the riders were upping the pace, and intended to pass me. I turned it up a bit until I no longer heard bike noise. I then settled back into my easy ride groove!

Friday Nov 10 #

MTB 2:56:00 [4] 29.4 mi (10.0 mph) +2811ft
ahr:117 max:146 weight:150.4lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: 1500+ body count. In 2016 (first year I counted) I caught and passed 1487 riders. Today's number was 25, which brings me to 1505 in 2017. It was busier than normal for a weekday, but a lot of people were on holiday. Of course, beautiful sunny weather and great dirt will bring out the riders and runners.

Thursday Nov 9 #

Walking 38:00 [1] 2.3 mi (3.6 mph) +200ft
(rest day) shoes: Scott Kinabalu Supertrack

Walk to DHZ to pick up wheel

Wednesday Nov 8 #

MTB 3:00:00 [3] 29.8 mi (9.9 mph) +2966ft
ahr:112 max:140 weight:150.6lbs shoes: SW MTB 2012

Grand Ridge-Duthie-Soaring Eagle: 500k day comes late this year. Today I went over 500,000' of climbing in 2017, which I have done for eleven straight years. I've hit the number as early as August 11th in 2015, a year that I had over 831,000' of total climbing. Hitting 500k has never been a goal; it just happens.

MTB 2:35:00 [4] 23.7 mi (9.2 mph) +3050ft
ahr:113 max:143 weight:151lbs shoes: Comp MTB 2011

Grand Ridge RT: With the end of Go-Fast Season, the major (but not only) reason to ride hard is to stay warm. As with most days, I was dressed perfectly for the weather, so there was no need to generate heat by riding harder.

Monday Nov 6 #

MTB 1:55:00 [4] 16.9 mi (8.8 mph) +1881ft
ahr:114 max:145 weight:149.8lbs shoes: Comp MTB 2011

PP-HP-Grand Ridge: Sunny but cold, a surprising amount of snow and really wet conditions make for a Type I Challenge. Type I as in fun vs. Type II, as in dangerous. The trails were snowy and slushy, making it difficult to discern the amount of grip available. As the trees shed their snow, it felt like a tropical rain forest, except that it was cold. It was beautiful in the forest, but it wouldn't have been a good day to mount the GoPro, as it would have been impossible to keep the lens free of moisture.

Sunday Nov 5 #

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 3.4 mi (3.4 mph) +400ft
weight:150.4lbs (rest day) shoes: Altra Olympus

Sycamore-Park Point-Hatchery: Search and Rescue afternoon? It was 35 degrees and sleeting when a young woman asked Tracy and me for directions to the Poo Poo Point trailhead that she couldn't find. We happened to be standing 50' from it, so we pointed it out. I noted her inappropriate clothing and the price tag still clipped to her trekking poles. We hope that she turned around before she got lost on the 8 mile round trip hike.
