MTB 1:55:00 [3] 17.6 mi (9.2 mph) +2208ft
ahr:114 max:148 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge: Snow is grippier than ice. We didn't have any snow at the house, but there were patches on the ground at the GR trailhead. There was about an inch up higher, and it was OK to ride in, albeit a little slow. There was a fair amount of ice on the trail when I started down the north side of the ridge, so I did an about-face and headed home. It was a shortish ride, but I had six MTB rides with 15,356' of climbing for the week. Not bad considering the weather!

MTB 2:06:00 [4] 20.6 mi (9.8 mph) +2176ft
ahr:115 max:145 shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

HP-Grand Ridge-HP: Tundra Trails were Tricky but not Treacherous. Today was the coldest day of the entire winter. The trails on the north side of GR had a lot of frost and ice, but their bark (appearance) was worse than their bite (as in, I didn't bite it). Grip was variable, and I played it conservative.

Hiking 1:00:00 [2] 2.5 mi (2.5 mph) +725ft
weight:148.8lbs (rest day) shoes: Altra Olympus 2.0 11.5

Squak Mountain Hike: Beta from Strava friend proves helpful. After .75" of overnight snow, I waited around for the temp to warmup and the roads to be safe enough for a ride to the trailhead. Not only didn't it warm up, I noticed that a friend who lives nearby rode to Grand Ridge and aborted his ride after a very short time. That was enough info for me. Turns out that the roads remained sketchy. Judging by the trail conditions on our hike, MTB riding wouldn't have been fun. Hiking in the sun with Tracy was though.

Grand Ridge RT: Warmup laps are not as fun as race laps. But I bet Sebastian Vettel still thinks it's pretty cool to drive his Ferrari F1 car during the warmup, and I love riding my Ferrari bike at any speed. Today's ride really was about warming up, as it was my fourth straight cold MTB ride in a row. I rode at "warmup" pace as well, because grip was a bit tricky and inconsistent on the frozen and frosty trails.

ahr:118 max:145 weight:148.8lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

Grand Ridge: Pushing the Cush out in the Bush. After two days on the hardtail, it was nice to get back on the full suspension bike, although I didn't exactly push it on the somewhat frosty trails.

MTB 20:00 [3] 19.8 mi (59.4 mph) +2293ft
ahr:117 max:149 weight:148lbs shoes: SW MTB 2014 Bling

HP-Grand Ridge: Hard Trails on the Hardtail. Hard, as in frozen. There was no frost on our roof this morning, but I encountered a considerable amount high up on the trails. Daytime temps in the 30's are pretty uncommon for us in December and January, let alone in late Feb. Frosty trails are not ideal for riding, but today was never going to be a Go Fast Day in any case, as there were lots of people out enjoying the brilliant sunshine. I just hope the paragliders I saw jumping off of Poo Poo Point were wearing their Woolies.

Mitchell Hill-Duthie Road-Gravel-Dirt Trifecta. I still don't get the fuss over gravel riding, but I thought I would give it a go on a local combo route. I had a course in the Garmin, but I still made two wrong turns. Nice to get a top ten on the paved full Mitchell climb, even with a wrong turn and riding a MTB, not a road or gravel bike. I won't be going back to see if I can do better! I skipped riding back over Grand Ridge because I knew that there were a lot of trees down after yesterday's wind storm.
