Day 2 of the West Point A-meet. The physical difficulty (length and climb) of the course were comparable to yesterday's. My time and my amount of navigational error were also similar to yesterday's. Altogether, this is a sign that I was performing at the same level as yesterday. This, in turn, is a sign that I was probably moving precisely as fast as my navigational ability and physical shape could allow me on both days.

The reason I see the same level of performance on the two days as a sign that I was going at exactly the right pace is the following. If I had been going too fast on the first day (and tried to maintain the same pace on the second day), I would have gotten more lost on the second day. If I had been going too slow on the first day, I would have gotten less lost and would have been physically faster on the second day.

Day 1 of the West Point A-meet. I had been right to focus on navigational goals more than on physical ones. The terrain and the course were wonderfully technical. As a result, however, no matter how carefully I was trying to read the map and the land around me, I wasn't reading them quite carefully enough. I don't feel that I made any route choice errors. However, I was not in contact with the map the entire time.

Today I am preparing myself mentally for the West Point A-meet tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. I expect this to be some of the most technically challenging terrain, some of the most difficult footing and two of the longest courses I've experienced in years. My two main goals are to stay in contact with the map the entire time and to make good route choices on long legs. If I can do this while walking uphills and trotting the rest of the way, I will be a happy man.
