Orienteering race (Scottish Day 2) 38:06 [3] *** 4.48 km (8:30 / km) +86m 7:46 / km
spiked:4/10c shoes: Adidas Swoop 2 (green)

It was a middle distance event today and I didn't have a very good run.

You can see my course and route on RouteGadget here. I was 14/27, the winner did 25:05 somehow.

#1 Rushed it and ended up in wrong reentrant, soon relocated. Lost 30s.
#2 Drifted south to wrong reentrant. Lost 30s.
#4 Followed river up ok but wasted time looking round the wrong clump of trees. Lost 1 min.
#6 I was a bit hesitant and could have gone a bit faster. Though going fast caused earlier problems. Lost 10s.
#7 Aimed between hills straight to control but somehow ended up on wrong hill! Weird. Lost 1 min.
#8 Drifted off bearing, got confused when hit fence. Should have realised quicker where I was as hadn't passed powerline. Lost 45s.
#9 Mistakenly climbed up hill to NE rather than one to N. Then turned right at end of hill and ended up further from control. Relocated off fence. Lost 1 min.
#10 Went round path to S of green hill then climbed up to #10. Should have gone straight. Lost 2 mins.
#11 Hit control at crag W of control before #11. Lost 15s.
#13 Wasted time exploring green hill W of #13. Lost 1 min.

I had a good run in with Simon.

So lost approx. 8 min 30 sec which is quite poor for a middle distance.  I wasn't being careful enough and started too fast.

Orienteering race (Scottish Day 1) 1:14:59 [4] *** 9.52 km (7:53 / km) +286m 6:51 / km
spiked:15/26c shoes: Adidas Swoop 2 (blue)

A fairly good run. Nice start on the beach and a nice area.

You can see my course and route on RouteGadget here. I was 16/26, the winner did 53:15.

#2 For some reason, I thought we weren't allowed to cross the fence. When I got to it I ran along the top of the nearby wall to the gate. Lost 20s.
#5 Decided to go round bottom of crags rather than over top. Unsure if it was best route.
#6 Drifted E from control. Lost 10s.
#7 Should have decided on route choice earlier. Slow to fence, then along road and caught people leaving the control. Not sure if route choice was best. Lost 1 min.
#10 Crossed at gate E if control. A better route choice would have been through the S gate. Lost 30s.
#11 Made a wrong turning going up reentrant near control, had to fight through vegetation. Lost 45s.
#14 Struggled to find control. Lost 30s.

Annoyed that some people crossed the uncrossable fence and that they always get away with it.

So about 5 minutes of mistakes, not too bad but was 16/26 which is ok.

Orienteering race 15:19 [4] ** 2.42 km (6:20 / km)
shoes: New Balance 1080

City Cup 4 at Ponderosa. Ran the long course, made a slight error at #4 and slowed to a walk on 2 occasions. Was pleased with my time, but Colin Smith just beat me. Distance above is course not GPS as my watch ran out of power :/

Note

Challenged my dad and Colin Smith to a sprint round the short course (1.2km) after we'd done the long. Mass start, just tagging controls.

I managed to pull away from Colin (he's quite fast!) on the path to #3. Kept going at fast speed, finished about 30s ahead of Colin and 60s ahead of my dad. Really pushed myself, think I overdid it as I felt exhausted and ill in the evening.

No idea of time as watch had run out of juice and the splits printer wasn't working. Can get time from base station though, eventually :)
