Cycling 1:40:00 [3]
Ride to work. Nice easy ride today, although the 2nd half sucked with a fierce head wind.
Cycling 1:30:00 [3]
Return ride home. Had the same head wind behind me this time for part of the trip. Was able to reach 60 km/h down hill at times. Sweeeeet.

Ocup #1
Cycling warm up/down 20:00 [2]
Was feeling iffy during the warmup. Legs felt tired and I couldn't determine if this was just nerves or tired.
Cycling race 45:00 [4]
Pretty aweful race today. After the first climb I could tell I was tired and didn't have any pop in my legs today. So just did what I could with longer recoveries at the top of the hills. about half way out on the second lap was gearing down to climb a hill and my chain got itself wedged inbetween the spokes and the gears. After spending a few minutes trying to get it out, it wasn't coming, I came to the realization this wasn't going to be and picked up my bike to carry it back to the start/finish. Eddie and Josh had good races and looked to be in mid season form.

They're calling for thundershowers today so my ride to and from work is canceled, went to the gym instead. Part of this was 30 min on the hand bike and the remaining on arms and core.

Running 35:00 [3]
After yesterdays hammer fest my legs were really tired today. Decided to push the intervals to Friday and go for an easy run along the water front.
Stretching 10:00 [1]
Followed this with some time spent stretching out my legs.

Tuesday Apr 24

Cycling 1:35:00 [3]
Ride to work, really pushed the pace on the way in.
Cycling 1:25:00 [4]
Really pushed it home, averaged roughly 3/4 kmph better then normal.

Feels good to whip by roller bladders on the water front trail at 35/40 km/h yelling "on your left". I'd rather be yelling something else at them, but knowing my luck I'd get a flat just after a passed them and then have to hide as they came by. Those things should be banned.

Cycling race 2:12:00 [4]
Started at the back of the second wave so I had a fair bit to make up on this one. Felt really good until about the final 30 minutes where I was getting tired in my legs. Saw Zoolander in the group up ahead, but I just couldn't catch them to hang on. Great day out riding and a very fun event.

Stretching 20:00 [1]
Spent some time stretching out my legs and hip later in the evening after the race.

Saturday Apr 21

Cycling 3:00:00 [3]
Out to Bolton for a ride on the new mountain bike with Phatty and the big Dyck. Had a great time playing with the new bike, except for the times when it appeared my tire had gone flat. Borrowed a tube from Phatty and it was sweet after that.

Note
Travel day, flew home from London.

Friday Apr 13

Note
Final day in the UK. We were traveling from Dartmoor to Heathrow in the afternoon and evening, but decided to get up and do one more hike to see a waterfall and beehive hut in the morning. 8k total, but their idea of a waterfall is pretty sad. We actually couldn't find it even though we were walking along the river the whole time. We figured that the serious of 1 ft water drops, over the k we hiked must be the waterfall.

Thursday Apr 12

Note
Day 2 in Dartmoor

Today we spent the day hiking at two different sites. In the morning we went out to find the Schorhill stone circle and something called Long Stone which is a stone that sites about 2 ft square and 8 ft high. In the afternoon we went to a site called Merryvale which has this really neat stone layout the druides built. Overall we probably hiked about 15k today, it was quite fun because you basically just use the map and compass and can hike anywhere you want. Climbed a few of the tors again to see the sites around.

Wednesday Apr 11

Note
Today we got up and rented a car to drive to Dartmoor. As we pulled into the area we had an idea that we needed to go to Princetown to get the ordinance map and then we do some hiking from there. Never ended up making it there as we ended up pulling into the first car park we found and they sold maps. Spent the afternoon hiking around at two different sites, climbing the tors for the views and then exploring some of the old settlements that were around on the hills.

Tuesday Apr 10

Note
Day 2 in Bath.

We started the day with a tour of a museum, then after lunch we hiked up to the top of Bath and spent the afternoon hiking around trails that look down on the city. 20 degrees and sunny, couldn't ask for better weather (I hear it was snowing in Toronto). We started out on the skyline hike, but then realized they have trails everywhere so we just went where we wanted to. Ended up even seeing the University of Bath as we cut across the campus, very nice. Ended the day with a walking tour in the evening called Bizarre Bath, which was really funny as this guy took us around Bath telling jokes doing magic and just telling us weird stories about the area.

Monday Apr 9

Note
Today was a travel day from Bream to Bath. We spent the morning driving into Bristol and then took the train to Bath. Afternoon we walked around Bath and went and saw the baths. Kristen was definitely more excited about this then I was.

Sunday Apr 8

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
Orienteering race 2:19:00 [4]
Day 3, M21L

So today we got to run with the elites, well they ran in the same direction as us, only with more controls. Was really interesting to be at the start with them. Listening to their strategies (they even strategize about when to eat their gel) and banter.

Today started out pretty rough. Control #1 was maybe a hundred meters away and I couldn't find it. Then on my way to 3 I was off my bearing to the left a bit and came out to what I thought was a road, which wasn't on my map, only after relocating did I realize it was a long paved driveway (hard to distinguish since most roads in the area are only one lane). After this I did pretty well, but I'd spent nearly 30 minutes on only 3 controls. After this race went as expected. I was a bit disappointed on a few that I didn't focus enough (#12 and #17). I will have to show people this map as some of the areas are really interesting to orienteer in. This map consisted of a serious of long runs followed by really tight tough sections with lots of controls. Most of the climbing was in the first half, but felt pretty good overall. Was really disappointed however because my goal was to run clean. My mood definitely improved when I found out that I'd moved up 4 spots on yesterday.

Orienteering 2:06:00 [4]
Day2, M21L

So for course 5 we actually had to use 2 different maps and half way through we had to drop our map and pick up another one. I decided to today to not carry water and see how it went (ok, but I wished I had water out there). I would say overall this went pretty smoothly, but I had trouble with a few controls. From the start I decided to take a very conservative aproach until I felt comfortable with the terrain. Good idea since they have all this ditches all over and they generally only map the big ones. As well they map a lot of rivers that we would probably just map as a long ditch. So I was looking for a fork in a river for my first control and say at least 2 until I came to mine. However, this didn't cost me that much delay. Had a bit of trouble with 5 (didn't run far enough). Started to get tired in the later third as we had two rather large hills to climb.

By far the most interesting part was when I crossed over into the second map. This was when I started using the map that everyone else was using. All of a sudden there was hundreds of people just running in every direction in the woods, crazy. Didn't have too many problems in this half as I was pretty focused with all the different controls and people. I was a bit disappointed with my time, until I saw that I was placed how I would be at home and this was a much tougher meet.

Event: JK 2007

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
Orienteering race 18:46 [5]
JK sprint. This was going to be interesting. A sprint race around the campus of UWE. Overall went pretty well, although speed is not my thing. The map was pretty cool and with 6 courses you just had people and controls all over the place. Probably could have taken a more direct route to #13, but it was hard to tell if it was one large building or a serious of smaller one with bridges/tunnels connecting it, so went around just in case.

Stayed to watch some of the elite men run. I was actually sitting at roughly half way in the standings until they started, then it all ended.

Thursday Apr 5

Running 45:00 [3]
First day in London, Kristen had to go meet a prof, so I had the whole day to myself. What to do... Well started with a morning jog around Buckingham Palace and some of the parks nearby. Then after breakfast it was off to do the tourist thing for the day. This consisted of a ride on the London Eye, a boat ride along the Thames and a trip to the London Tower.
