Adventure Racing race 17:08:00 [3]
MIX'`09 with the Milton Basement Racers. We went into this race hoping that we'd be able to pull off a top 5. I had done one expedition type race before and for everyone else this was their first one. We tried to remember everything we'd learned from others to get us through this.
The first stage started with a paddle which by far is the worst discipline for MBR. Considering that at Rage last year we were basically last off of the water we were pleasantly surprised to be in the middle of the pack this time around. Eddie did a great job this year in the paddle and even he could feel a difference this year with some time spent at the gym. From the paddle it was a nice bike ride including a sweat single track section and then a trek.
We ended up doing both of the first two treks at night which definitely made it a little tougher for us then some of the lead teams. On the first trek I totally screwed up the first hill top and this cost us a lot of time. This was frustrating because this is normally were we make up a lot of time on teams, so by the end of the trek we were still sitting back in 7th or 8th.
Oh well, we took a nice 90 min nap after the rafting section and continued on bikes. I really enjoyed the biking this year as we hit almost no hike a bike sand. A good mix of dirt roads and two track and we were back at the ski resort where we started the trek. Off again we were starting to slow down as Eddie's feet were getting sore, we took some of his weight out of his pack and gave him a set of trekking poles to help. Came into the O-start with Checkpoint Zero. They'd said that it was going down to 0 that night. You can imagine our surprise when they go running by in shorts and fast and light jackets. Oh well, they burn past us, we duck into the woods and hike up to the first point and don't we see them in the distance trying to come to us at the CP. I guess speed doesn't always pay if you're not going in the right direction.
I thought we did just ok at this O section. We hit all the points, but we definitely weren't very fast out there. I was quite surprised when we came out of the woods and found out that we'd moved all the way up to 3rd.
After the trek it was another bike and then a paddle, nothing too exciting on these. Then a long trek mostly on roads. Audrey remembered that she had her Ipod and speakers with her so we hiked along the roads singing along to tunes of her youth (ahh I love music from the 60's), and then pulled into the boy scout camp just as they were getting ready to sacrifice the scouts to their pagan gods. At least that's what it looked like to us in our sleep deprived state as we look onto a field with bouncing touches and loud drums beating.
Out onto the bikes and I was doing my best impression of a late night drunk trying to bike home. Eddie and Tom both said they were about to say something because I was biking at about 5 kph and swerving all over the roads, but then I stopped and said I needed a nap so down we went. After that we were good and continued on into the last TA. We had already decided we'd take one final nap here to be rested for the last day. I think this really helped because we flew through the last O section and if I'd planned a better route probably could have cleared the whole course in 4 hours. However, I totally misjudged how long it would take and we'd finished our route in 2.5 hours and had to go back around collecting more controls. I remember this next time to plan a full route with escape points rather then planning a shortened route to only get a sub set of controls.
After that it was a quick bike and another paddle into the finish. As I had predicted Eddie and I balled on the paddle and got to go for a nice cold swim in the rapids section. That only helped us to pick up the pace as we were now freezing cold paddling into the wind.
We ended up 3rd place overall rough 2.5 hours behind the Bobkittens who had a great race. I was also really surprised how close we were to Nuun, who I had thought would just run away from everyone.
For next time we'll need to look at a few things to improve our race.
- Too much time spent in the TAs and fiddling around at the checkpoints. This definitely slowed down as the race went on.
- We probably could have moved faster on some trail sections. When we raced 2 years ago we walked almost all of this and so I was hesitant to run fearing that it might hurt us later on, but we probably could have handled it.
- Need to reduce the nav mistakes. CP E cost us a lot of time and when we finally found it we realized we'd walked right past it before. If I spent a bit more time looking at it before we attacked I might have been more sure when we go into it.
Things we did really well.
- The two O-sections were very clean for us. Audrey's pace counting is almost dead on now which really helps for me to rely on.
- Biking, I think we worked better as a team on the bike then last year, we rode the pace line much better on the roads and worked as a team to get through these sections.
- Eddie did amazing considering how worried he was going into the race. Considering he had to find time to train while raising 2 kids I think he was our all star.
