Orienteering race 12:00:00 [4]

Back again for the E2C with M&M. I felt going into the race we had a better plan for our course than last year. The only section I wasn't sure about was a few checkpoints in the middle. Looking at Phatty's route for them I think he had a better idea than us, but oh well. The first 9 hours went really well for us, although as always at about 3 hours into the race I felt like A$$. As the sun set and I dry heaved a bit I felt a lot better and we were really able to nail the nav. Our major setback occured when darkness hit and we discovered that M&M's lights didn't work at all. She even had a spare battery and that didn't work either. Luckily we were able to borrow a small flash light at the aid station, but even this wasn't helping a whole lot. Our pace during the night slowed to a crawl in the woods and at about 5 in the morning I realized we were now way behind on our route and needed to cut out back to the road and start to drop on checkpoints. At the same time I was also very cold with both my hands and feet feeling like ice and I was starting to shiver pretty bad. Audrey was also very cold so we decided to shorten our route and head back to the car to warm up. We ended up 8th overall which I'm still impressed with considered we stopped at around 7 in the morning and our pace from 9 pm on was dreadfully slow.

Some things I need to remember for next time

Food: I had packed 4 bags of about 1200 calories with the intention each one lasted 6 hours. Actually each one lasted about 4.5-5 hours, so I probably need one more bag
Things I really enjoyed eating were:
- Tamari almonds
- Chocolate covered peanuts
- Powerbar gummy things
- Chips
Things I missed
- Gu gels (power gels are just not the same)
- Cheese
- Yogurt in a tube (stupid Tim for leaving this at home)
Things I didn't enjoy
- I had too many gummy/jujubes and missed the package of real fruit chews I normally bring along

I should also bring more dry foods as I think this helped my stomach rather then filling it with liquids.

Clothes: Next time I need more clothes with me. I should bring over mitts for my hands and a second long sleeve for the night. I'm glad I brought my rain jacket rather than the fast and light.
Lights: It would be a good idea to through a small headlamp in the bottom of our pack just in case. This wouldn't weight too much and would be very helpful in cases like this race.

Good things about the race
I was really trying to get more salt in the race and I think this helped. I also tried to monitor my water intake and this helped when I went to throw up and wasn't spewing like a water hose. I'm starting to wonder if the Nuun is part of my upset stomach with it being fizzy.

Running 30:00 [3]

Light run with Mrs. Tiny so she could test her new trail runners and I could test my hamstring before the weekend. Hamstring felt ok so I think this weekend should go ok.
