Adventure Racing race 21:00:00 [3]

Wilderness Traverse

Not out best race overall but still fun to be out there with the original MBR team.

We had a good first leg, we didn't go out to hard on the run, kept it consistent on the bike, nailed the nav section and then didn't get passed by too many teams.

We knew the paddle would be hard for us and it was. Eddie did a great job for the first part paddling with Audrey, but after the second checkpoint he asked to switch because his arms were tired from steering the canoe. He and I switched and this created a big weight imbalance. We did well until we round the corner at the south and then we were straight into the wind and had trouble. Keeping the canoe straight and going forward. At one point we got stuck in a channel and had to get Eddie and Tyson to pull us out, but it worked.

Onto the trek and we ran down to 9, from there I liked our route to 10. We headed down to the river and then stayed high on the ridge down to the waterfall. On our way to 11 we were a bit north and ended up pretty wet. We hit the lake for 11 just north of the CP and started around the top of the lake, but then figured out we needed to go back around south. From 11 to 12 Tyson started to feel nauseous and the pace started to slow. Into 12 I think we had held our own.

That's when the wheel's fell off. Tyson wasn't feeling well at all and was just suffering on the bike. I also never noticed the road (as I tend not to) so we rode the power line the whole way up to 13. I think the combination of doing this a night, and how Tyson was feeling this was a really slow bike leg (read 4 hours). We pulled into 13 and you could just see Tyson was suffering. Given how long that took us I was worried if it was a good idea to do another power line section in case he started to get even worse. We decided to let him lye down in front of the fire and he sleep soundly for 2 hours. After that he woke up and didn't feel as tired, but still was feeling pretty awful. Decided to pull the plug at that point and get a drive back to the finish rather then suffer anymore.

A really great race put on by Bob and Bash. I could have done without the paddle, but otherwise a lot of fun.

Note

Training wise it's been a series of unfortunate circumstances the last week.

1. Kristen was away all last week so I had to try and fit any training in either during work hours or when Aubrey is asleep.
2. Doing Squats on Tuesday I felt something pull in my groin muscle, on Wednesday I hurt to straighten my leg (so decided not to run/cycle the rest of the week), was feeling find by Friday.
3. Wednesday Aubrey didn't go to daycare because she had a fever and was complaining her head hurt, she ended up sleeping all day.
4. Saturday I started to get what she had and I've been useless all weekend as I slowly started to feel worse. Slept 10 hours last night and I could have kept going this morning.
