Orienteering race 3:00:00 [4]
Snowshoe RAID
I always love this race every year. I knew this year my fitness wasn't as good as previous years, but figured we'd see how it went. As seems to be the case the last few years Eddie and I ended up on our own for a while at the start of the race and then other teams started to catch us on the back part of the map. We decided to use snowshoes for the race, and found it hard to keep up with the teams that didn't use them. We hit our 2 hour mark about 5 min late, but I was also getting pretty tired so we switched our plan to take the trail to 55(?) rather than the double black diamond off trail. We did the matrix next and the climb up to 35 and over to hit the trail on the other side really hit me hard. Jamie and Storm passed me as they were running back to the aid station and I was struggling to shuffle/walk back. Back to Eddie I handed him my snowshoes and we started the run back. I was struggling here and Eddie had to wait at times for me to catch up.
We were almost back and Eddie made the comment that we probably just had to run straight back. I shot back that we should try and get 2 more on our way down the hill. He didn't say no so off we went. We found both with ease and by now there was a pretty good trail to each of them so we could run all of it as well.
We finished a few minutes late, but those last 2 controls made the difference (which is what normally happens in this race and why I pushed for us to get them) and we beat out Storm/Jamie for the win.
First time we've won this race (helps that Eric Batty didn't show up nor did Harper), but still felt cool to pull it off.
