Note

Spent 40 or so hours in Ottawa after travelling from Finland's wilderness. Shifted gears - packed up ski clothes and equipment and now leaving for Snow Farm, New Zealand. :)

Orienteering race 1:09:00 [4] 6.0 km (11:30 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212

Stage 2 of O-week in Vuokatti, Finland. Same area as before but started farther west.

Had a great run. 2 mistakes. First happened just because I wasn't paying attention, lost contact w map, relocated and then hit control nearly bang-on after that. Prob 10mins lost. Two controls later I took straight bearing through white but didn't go far enough, backtracked 100m and then 180'ed back towards control. Gah! Definitely lost a min or two there.

Was feeling a good deal better by this race but had to stop and walk (even on trails) when lungs got too wheezy. Yuck.

Funny to have (another) orienteer run up behind me, recognize my Ottawa shirt and cheer "run, Canada!" Same thing happened in first stage.

Anyways, in all I really enjoyed this course, the gorgeous woods, level of difficulty. Wasn't expecting Finland to have woods THAT beautiful.

Note

Great fun today watching the sprint races in Vuokatti and Sotkamos. Tough runs for the Canadians. Awesome day for superstar Ali Crocker!
The final was held at a stadium and the place was overflowing with wild fans. Mom and I finally found a place to sit and shortly realized we were probably in the loudest section of the whole arena. The Swiss were pumped tonight!

Orienteering race 1:51:03 [4]
(sick) shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212

Tough race today in the heat. Being sick didn't make it any easier. Big problem with 1 of the controls...just wasn't thinking straight.
Otherwise I had a good time running slowly through the Finnish woods - the most beautiful woods I've ever seen!
