Orienteering 1:10:01 [4] 6.0 km (5.1 kph)

Jumbuck Hill H2

Took what I thought was the safe option by going straight up the track to what should have been an easy simple first control. The Head was just not into gear when I headed into the bush and I hit the right gully but nothing fitted. It ended up much lower than I originally thought. From then on all was relatively straightforward and for the first time in a long while I actually started to feel quite good with no impeding injuries and navigation on track.

Orienteering 33:47 [4] 4.0 km (7.1 kph)

Only made one mistake but was generally slow.

Cycling 4:05:50 [4] 104.4 km (25.5 kph)

Started off very cold but ended up being a magnificent day for a bike ride. It started off with a funny look from a police officer with a speed gun as I did 42 through the school zone. The day did improve with a youngster overtaking then having to stop quickly on the light change. I am sure I did not improve his mood by me hanging on all the way to West Perth. Met up with @komy at the Mt Henry bridge for a round the river ride. On the way met up with a lost looking Asian fellow from Morley. I think he was looking for bike signs to show him the way to Freemantle. Fat chance as all the bike signs have been painted over in Dalkeith. We left him at Freo, wondering whether he could find his way back.

Hockey 1:40:00 [4]

Paid for the extra run with soreness

Cycling (CTA Group Ride) 3:35:17 [4] 82.0 km (22.9 kph) +932m

Hills ride visiting Gidgiganup, Mundaring and Kalamunda.
Plenty of fun downhill sections to compensate for the climb. Slowish group so some waiting time on hill tops. Weather held off until the last 5 km

Hockey 1:10:00 [4]

Seemed to run around a lot without being too brilliant. Tired at the end. 9-2 our way

Cycling 57:27 [4] 23.83 km (24.9 kph)

Port Hedland Loop. Started the ride with a gentle breeze which increased to an annoying headwind and turned into a gusting gale too dangerous to be a riding a bike. Any thought of doing a second loop evaporated

Walking 45:00 [1]

Took a hyperactive border collie to the beach for a "walk"

Walking 2:40:00 [2] 8.1 km (3.0 kph)

480km round trip from Port Headland to Karratha and back to get a car serviced. Spent the waiting time walking the Jaburara Trail (a ridge top walk) on the hill adjacent to Karratha. Noted various historical pieces of graffiti along the way.

Strong evidence of boomtown with construction every where. After paying $6 for a coffee here how can you complain about Perth coffee prices?

Walking 30:00 [1]

Checking out the Burrup Peninsula hieroglyphs

Cycling 1:30:30 [4] 42.6 km (28.2 kph)

Two loops around Port Hedland with the local tri club. Absolutely perfect temperature with little wind. A big contrast to Perth. I declined the third loop as on the previous loop I was only just keeping up.

Walking 45:00 [1]

Walk the dog to Pretty Pool Beach with the daughters hyperactive border collie. Discover a weird guy walking around without any clothes and then a couple showing all. The sign at the other end explained that I was in fact on the towns clothing optional beach.

Cycling 1:06:00 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (36:00 @4) 27.2 km (24.7 kph)

Coast ride to shake out the legs. Unpleasant with a stiff easterly and residual tiredness.

Cycling (Tour de Avon v2) 6:31:55 [4] 163.64 km (25.1 kph) +895m

CTAWA 160km challenge ride by brevet card.

Set off on my own from Bakers Hill into the rising sun. As the first few km's were on the Great Eastern Highway I was particularly worried about vehicles hitting me from behind due to the poor visibility. An extremely narrow or absent road shoulder did not help. I was finally able to relax when I turned into Spencers Brook road. From then on there was very little traffic and I was able to "enjoy" the scenery. The first twenty km felt more difficult than necessary and I was already thinking about short cuts. I finally realised that it was not just me fatiguing but a reasonably consistent east to south easterly headwind, which I had most of the way to Beverly (mid point). One exception was a short section just outside York where the road turns from SE to W and I absolutely flew. Coffee at York and then an undulating road to Beverley.

Lunch at the only Café in town were the home made pie I had was magnificent but the price of $4.80 for poweraid was not. A tailwind after lunch felt good but was modified somewhat by an overall steady climb and regular steeper sections. Felt good most of the way but started to tire on the climb up to Yarra Road. Inkpen road was very unpleasantly rough. The final 6km uphill on the Great Eastern Highway was torture will nothing left in the tank.

Overall enjoyable but would have been better with partners to help with the workload into the wind

Warm-up 10:00 [2]

7 AM

Hockey 40:00 [4]

Selection trials for WA state team
10 AM

Orienteering 52:49 [4]

A steady run throughout considering the previous early exercise. Slow up the hills but few errors. Looking at the times good route choices taken on 7 -8 by going underneath the rocks and 9 - 10 by taking the high contour reducing route.

Hockey 1:10:00 [3]

10 or 12 nil up. Played well as a team which made the game enjoyable. Scored 3 myself.

Cycling 54:01 [4] 25.77 km (28.6 kph)

Head out on the Read Hwy aiming for Guilford for a rendezvous with the Frogs. No incidents felt good riding up the hill.

Cycling 1:07:24 [4] 29.7 km (26.4 kph)

Pleasant ride back along the bike paths from Guilford. Not much left in the last 5 km.

Cycling 1:12:28 [4] 33.59 km (27.8 kph) +141m

Shorter ride than normal up the coast. Managed a good pace with a tail wind

Cycling 3:07:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @3) + (2:07:00 @4) 77.3 km (24.8 kph) +290m

Estimated distance as GPS switched off at one stage. The initial cold required all layers on, but 5k on required a partial strip as I warmed up. Head to Shelly to catch up with Komy and do a loop incorporating the shelly forshore, buswood and south Perth

Orienteering (WA Classic day2) 1:06:43 [4] 6.34 km (5.7 kph)

Good route choice options for leg1 of the E3 course. I chose the safer higher route. A little tricky to pick the best entry from the paddock back into the bush. Picking a route to 2 when I realised that I had left my compass behind. Without a compass on one of our most complicated maps and no sun to help orientate the map was going to be interesting.. I paid for it straight away choosing the wrong line to 2 and ending up close to a fence where there was supposed to be none. So which fence was it? Hold on was that Hobbs road to the right? A reajustment and using fences as attack points enabled me to find 2 - a lot of time lost (7m).

A few clearings helped to get to 3. Safe option to 4 by taking the wide route up the fence then cutting across - some time lost. Long leg to 5. Set of too far left initially, however this helped me to pick big features on the way. The deviation from the line and a misreading of the track resulted in additional lost time.. Wide route to 6 as a result of no compass bearing. Enough features on the way to read where I was.

Straightforward from then on with good visibility assisting straight lines.

Suprised I got away with not making too many other big mistakes

Orienteering (WA Classic) 41:45 [4] 4.0 km (5.7 kph)

Started well then at 5 made the first of a number of blunders on this side of the hill - by just not reading the map right and choosing the wrong pile of rocks. To 6 in retrospect I headed over a saddle I did not need to and wondered why I could see a dam infront of me when there should not have been. Fortunately I corrected quickly and lost only a minute. Over the hill to 8 I got distracted by another runner and picked the wrong ridge line and totally confused - nothing fitted. (an 8 min mistake). The remainder was slow to avoid further big mistakes.
