Cycling 2:22:16 intensity: (1:00:00 @3) + (1:22:16 @4) 56.63 km (23.9 kph)

Ride to the city outskirts then Subi, via river to Swanbourne then with a tail wind home up the coast. Lots of stops and starts in the Perth Metro area

Cycling 1:35:38 [3] 40.78 km (25.6 kph)

Ride up coast. A slow leak towards the end. Turns out the puncture corresponds to a cut in the tyre (created by riding over a metal strip last week).

Local Riding

Cycling 3:28:32 [4] 77.5 km (22.3 kph)

Enough headwind and climb to dampen enthusiasm. Ride from Home to Chidlow to meet with the frogs and back to Forestfield for lunch. Two hard exercise events this week meant I felt every kilometre

Hockey 1:45:00 [4]

Big session after a few weeks off - will be sore tomorrow

Cycling (10000 in 8) 6:20:57 intensity: (2:20:57 @4) + (4:00:00 @5) 119.72 km (18.9 kph) +2069m

The challenge is to complete 10000ft of climb in under 8 hours of total time. One of CTAWA hardest rides. Up down 6 major climbs and a few intermediates on the way on the Stirling scarp

So why do it when I have done no hill riding for at least 6 months? If that wasn't enough there was a gusty easterly making the uphill harder and the downhill unstable.

So it wasn't exactly fun. granny gear on the harder climbs and nothing left for the 14% gradient on Paterson road near the end. Finished before the storm

Coast ride with Frogs

Cycling 1:37:54 [3] 41.95 km (25.7 kph)

Not much enthusiasm. A moderate easterly felt like a headwind most of the way

MTBO (Middle Distance) 1:20:01 [5] 13.0 km (6:09 / km)

Took the big track option for the first control - longer but faster. Then headed for control 3, not seeing that control 2 was on the same line. It was when I reached 4 that I realised I missed 2 and had blown my chances for this race with an 11m mistake. From 2 on the single track missed the exit to the wider faster track to the right and lead 2 others away from my intended route choice. Not a lot of enthusiasm for 3 & 4. The fifth control was missing. Given I was clearly and unambiguously in the right spot I took off for 6 but not too soon to see a sheepish dalto arrive with the control.

on to 7 for some strange reason I took the more navigationally challenging route and stuffed it up. I relocated away from the single track and then found it. Mistakes towards the end of the course were related to overtiredness.

Somehow I clawed back to 3rd place for my age group
2 PM

MTBO (Sprint) 34:18 [4] 6.0 km (5:43 / km)

First off for my age group so sufficient adrenaline running to win the first control. Read the map right by going to the left of the clearing. Others went straight past. Most controls I read well but for
- 5 - had to wait for traffic - also hesitated reading the map
- out of 5 took the wrong option and had to carry the bike over a log. On the way to 6 slow but spent time reading legs to come
- 7 was slow compared to every one else - no idea why
- 9 almost rode past the tennis court but corrected
- 10 high fencing prevented access across the oval not allowing access until the basket ball courts from where I headed north but hit a dead end. Corrected and found the control around the corner
-11- Needed to stop to get my head around the positioning of this control (oxygen debt?)
- Brain fading towards the end searching the wrong track for 17 (30sec error)
- Taking the wrong track to 18 and not knowing where I was. Corrected but this 50sec mistake could have been costly

Finished first in the age group but could not beat Anthea in her moon boot

MTBO 1:59:35 [5] 27.0 km (4:26 / km)

WA State MTBO Champs

New map in pine forest and native bush in the headwaters of Margaret River. Riding was slow due to sandy spots and pine needles and rare firm ground. In addition my total riding had dropped off over the last few months and I had not been on a MTB for at least two months. The start was not good missing my first junction and then going too far. Seeing a distressed Ken Post heading back along the same track made me reassess and correct.

From then on I took conservative route options and concentrated on navigation rather than speed. Splits show this. Some other competitors had faster legs but I made fewer mistakes and ended up winning my age class

Good map and well set
