East Laoshan/Park. Two runs broken by ten minutes of strength/core.

Strength Training 10:00 [3]

Pull ups, sit-ups, bench push-ups & lunges. A few quick sets of each.

Note

1. coffee 1300 ml
2. 2-3 cups oats / 1/2 cup processed cereal / 2 cups of skim milk
3. about a cup of sweet potatoes
4. 3 boiled eggs
5. chocolate ice cream

The humidity is low today and it's cool. About 24% and 70 degrees. My skin is dry and inflamed but I don't feel as chapped as I was during the transition to this weather.

Hiking & Running 27:24 [4]

Area run. Mostly around the Park and finally to an outdoor exercise yard to strength train with the old folks.

Looking at my stats lately and I am happily seeing a floor forming around my efforts. I am passing the cycle of exercise to injury to recovery. I'm feeling better overall and motivated to keep going.

Strength Training 10:00 [3]

Some random exercising which I clearly need to organize into a routine. Pull ups, sit-ups, bench push-ups & lunges. A few sets of each, to exaustion, rotate and resume.

The exercise yard in the neighborhood south of East Laoshan perfect. Tree lined; old folks in their own routines nearby. An elderly woman next to me [about 70 years or so] put her leg up on bar at head level and stretched her hamstrings. Another old man just beyond her, deep stretching his back, still another quietly, quickly and persistently rotating his legs on a mounted stationary bicycle while he smiled at his jumping bean grand-daughter. Awesome.

Note

1. coffee 1300 ml
2. 2-3 cups oats / 1/2 cup processed cereal / 1 cup of skim milk
3. 2 fried eggs
4. chocolate ice cream

Cycling 36:01 [2] 6.2 mi (10.3 mph)

Our school rep, Amanda, is having a difficult time locating a pharmacy that can meet the requirements for the treatment that I received in Taiwan. The only pharmacy that stocks all the components being the same clinic that wanted to sell their exclusive tonic. hmm.

We recalled that while looking for the clinic, none of the old people in the neighborhood knew where it was. She commenting at the time that it seemed odd but after a few days of consideration we both agreed that it's a pretty clear sign. Neither of us want to go back so she says she will call around.

After a little deliberation, I am going to review and renew the approach that I took while in Taiwan in regards to diet. Observing now, as I did then, what I consume and consider how it might be an issue with my skin. Especially as outlined by Terry's Diet [http://www.psorsite.com/docs/terry.html]. I broke the diet all the time in Taiwan [damn you fried chicken!] so I am sure that the gains I made were TCM prescription specific but since my options are limited, it's currently all that I have. Though in truth, it *is* the fundamental thing. "Let food be thy medicine", right?

So, same rules: '+' the treatment and number those suspect.

Note

1. coffee 1000ml
2. 2-3 cups oats / 1/2 cup processed cereal / 1 cup of skim milk
3. sweet potatoes
4. 1 hard-boiled egg
5. white rice 2 cups
6. coke 500ml

I'm not certain about the oats. They're here because Terry had issues but the benefits to regularity are pretty significant. They are a good source of fiber.

At issue is apparently a protein in the oats called "avenin" which is similar to gluten and toxic to the mucosa lining of the intestines to those sensitive to it. Another issue is that they are frequently contaminated by other crops nearby that do contain gluten [wheat, barley, etc.].

Some recent studies fount that non-light beers that contain malted barley increase the risk for psoriatic outbreaks. Though alcohol is an issue, it's the barley that seems to be the culprit [since they both contain alcohol].

The eggs are not listed in the Terry Experience but I have read of others having a sensitivity/trigger.

Commute. On the way home, some dude on an ill-fitting brand new showroom road bike weaved through me and others, hammering away at his aluminum miracle. So for you, I was that guy that easily reeled you in three blocks later. Hats off for picking it back up and hanging off my wheel, but did you ever look tired.

I guess it *is* fun being that guy on occasion. Especially on a 24 year old, beat up Raleigh.

Long interview with Dr. Changshan at the Moshikou Hospital of Traditional Medicine. Beautiful campus. Dr. Changshan's office a spacious wood floored affair. A man in the corner practicing calligraphy.

Strange that Changshan basically gave me no physical exam. Didn't exam my tongue, sclera or that awesome 5 minute pulse taking seen so often in TCM. He sat us down, gave us tea, and turned his computer towards me to show directory after directory of successful case studies. His entire treatment regimen rests on a single supplement: A daily 4.5 gram dose of Yin Xie Ping.

No dietary changes. Weird. I just confirmed this on the clinic's site [via google translate] where he states that dietary considerations are "perhaps an excuse to make up for poor treatment". He even offered me a cigarette and laughed when I told him that it was bad for his lungs. Everyone who actually has psoriasis and pays attention at all knows that diet is huge. Tobacco being a significant trigger.

Anyhow, it's a six month course of treatment and costly, about $115 / month. I only found one TCM study. It was co-authored by the man himself, looked at only 60 patients and published to the TCM choir. This is what is so frustrating about this aspect of TCM. It's opaque.

I'm not going to do it. I can't sign on with a "drink this" and you'll be cured.

Off to the Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic [bjmskzy.com] tomorrow for another round of treatment for my resident bitch, psoriasis. My first treatment being in Taiwan, to good effect.

It's to the point that I can't put it off any longer. I have the same coverage that I have had since we arrived in China [about 20-30%] but since the weather has changed here it's gotten considerably worse.

Earlier this month [within the span of a week or so] the temperatures dropped to the upper 70's / low 80's and the humidity dropped into the 60-70% range. My skin was almost immediately dryer, scalier, more inflamed and irritated.

I took some baseline pictures on 08/19 [before the temperature changes] and I will again tomorrow before I go forward with the clinic's plan. The clinic in Taiwan gave me an herbal supplement and a simple list of don'ts. I'm curious as to what this clinic will propose and wierdly enough hoping for some acupuncture. A friend forwarded the prescription that I received in Taiwan and they were all, "meh" about it so who knows. I'm certain, however, that they will be on my case about the coffee. Sigh.

In the past I kept the daily details in a text file but since I'm on attackpoint anyhow I might as well put it here. Apologies if you've stumble onto the log for workout data. There is more minutiae to come. The good outcome being my research project for the nursing program in Tucson.

Cycling 3:50:41 [3] 35.8 mi (9.3 mph)

Long afternoon ride to Sanlitun for pizza. It's been months since we've had any kind of pizza! Intended to loop around the grounds of the Summer Palace but an afternoon of choking smog, cars zipping backwards through bikelanes, stopped in same bikelanes with a queue of cars behind [not to mention the bikes] so that they could buy a sports paper, non-signaling cars making wild turns and over curbs, scattering pedestrians and, well, just cars in all kinds of configurations finally inspired us to head home. It's fine, whatever, but enough is enough and so we abandoned better laid plans.

I think that our minds were a little darkened by an Energy Bulletin interview we had read the night before. Essentially saying that society, as it is practiced in its industrial sense, is an organized violence. A sensibility that I wholeheartedly agree with, but not the attitude that we should necessarily take with us on a bicycle tour of all places, Beijing.

Hiking & Running 19:16 [4]
shoes: RunAmoc Dash 5mm

The old usual. Strange [and a little suspicious]: I feel like I made it over a bit of a hump. I've invested more time in stretching [and yet no where near a solid regimen] with the groin pain abated by some middle school gym butterfly stretching these last few days.

Overall feeling pretty good. When I look over my log I can see that I am pretty much responsible for my issues. I see these sharp rises in the amount of time running followed by pain and then a sluggish feeling. I feel great, increase my distance, my speed picks up, then I start feeling some pain in my shins, or groin, or calf. Then I feel sluggish, or heavy, get irritable and then whiny, and the following week I bottom out, stretch some, feel better and back up the hill I go.

The bottom line is that it's more complex training a 40 year old than a 24 year old. Bill was right, I am getting older. But not in any, time to slow down and accept kind of way, but being smarter and more deliberate. I gaining more respect for the process than I had 15+ years ago.
