Running 10:00 [2]
shoes: Falcons #2

Run to start.

Orienteering 2:30:00 [2]
shoes: Falcons #2

I woke up this morning and my back felt no worse from yesterday, so I decided I probably didn't need to worry so much about my back. Again, I kept the pace modest and did my best to keep my posture upright. I fell twice, which was very painful, but other than that I didn't notice my back at all. Of course, the two extra strength advil I took probably had something to do with that. The terrain and courses were extremely challenging for me. I made some big mistakes, and had a lot of problems planning legs. I started to enjoy myself halfway through the course when I started to understand the contours a little better. This was one of my most challenging weekends of orienteering. I regret bailing out yesterday, but only in retrospect do I feel confident that my back would have been ok.

I have mispunched in races and I have failed to finish a race because I would have exceeded a time limit, but today was the first time that I've chosen to not finish. I fell at the end of my run on Wed and thought nothing of it until I awoke Thursday morning to find I couldn't bend over because of pain in my lower back. Sitting was uncomfortable and cycling was out of the question, but if I stood up straight or lay down it was fine. I decided to participate Saturday because surprisingly running felt fine as long as I didn't bend over, which is difficult to do in an o-race. To shorten a long story, I was distracted with trying to protect my back and was not concentrating on the navigation, and in that terrain I needed to concentrate fully. After an hour of that, I decided to bail out and head back.

I re-glued the sole of my right o-shoe. I thought I'd take them for a spin to see how they feel ... not great. They stretched out a bit after 30 mins, but were a bit tighter and lumpier than I'd have liked. I'd wear them for less than an hour, but a longer run would be silly.

I'm happy to have squeezed in some running this weekend. We were at the Hillside Festival on Friday and Sunday and a wedding on Saturday.

I have a nasty blister under my big toe from the weekend runs, so this was a bit painful. It was still worth getting out while I was in Saskatoon where the morning was quite cool. It is better than the oppressive heat I'll be returning to in Ontario. I ran north along the river, crossed the river on the railway trestle and returned through the U of S campus.

My feet are feeling a lot better than earlier in the week. Though they still ache a bit. After a very light week, I was really surprised that I had some muscle soreness on Saturday from Friday's run.

I saw my first 3D movie today:

It was an awesome film though the epilogue seemed out of place. Thank God Herzog received permission to enter those caves, and not the Discovery Channel.

Time wounds all heels. -Groucho Marx?
I've been sporadically getting aching pains in my feet, especially the heel of my right foot, over the last month. It doesn't seem serious, but on Monday my heel was sore just standing around. I'm going to take it easy for the next week or so. Hopefully I'm over reacting.

Last week Laura returned home from a vacation in Paris. She graciously decided to share the experience with me by taking me on a bike ride to Paris ... Ontario. We took the rail trail to Paris and West River Road on the way back.

Hanging streamers for tomorrow. It was a busy day and I only got out just before dusk. The bugs were bad but I was rewarded with some fireflies after nightfall.

A relaxed run just west of Barrie on some great trails. I felt surprisingly good after all the running over the weekend and a very late night that included more than a couple of adult beverages.

Running 42:00 [2]

Warm up and collecting flags with Nick. Very hot and humid today.

Orienteering 52:00 [3]

Two very challenging loops. I was certainly better on the second loop except for a huge error on the second last CP. Physically I felt pretty good, but my nav has a lot of room for improvement.

Two challenging loops. I felt very rusty, and made a mess of the first CP which in retrospect was not that difficult.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Another late evening session with Nick. We hung ribbons for tomorrow's session. I didn't have the courses. I just tried to follow along on a blank map as Nick lead. Very tricky in some spots, and I lost contact quite a few times.
