Backpacking 2:30:00 [4] 10.0 km (15:00 / km) +40m 14:42 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: Zamberlan Hiking Boots

Gibson Trails...trail was flooded and impassable.

Volleyball 40:00 [1]

We won 1 of 3 games. We're still not doing too bad this year. I am still a horrible v-ball player, though.

Wednesday Jun 29, 2005 #

Note
slept:5.0 (rest day)

Warmed up by working late, then did some heavy fork lifting, followed by 2 hours of intensive play watching. The Dream in High Park is fantastic this year. What an opening sequence! Phenomenal juxtaposition!

Elliptical (X-trainer Elliptical) 1:00:00 [4]
slept:6.5 weight:91.6kg

Legs felt a little bit shakey at the end. I good sign, I guess, but I also feel like I am out of conditioning. Wait, don't I always feel like that?

The scale at my gym gives different weights, depending on how I stand on it. I'm not convinced at the accuracy of it.

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Finished off my cardio with some time on the bike. I had thought about going for an hour, but I didn't think I could do it.

Swimming 30:00 [2] 0.45 km (1:06:40 / km)

I tried to focus a lot on what Mick told me about technique...esp. arm positioning and turning my torso to reduce my horizontal water column.

I found that these changes made it easier to breath.

Also, not doing an upper body workout beforehand also helped.

Tennis 10:00 [1]

Played tennis with Sparkes until the lights went out. My power serve continues to develop (I'm able to deliver almost complete power through most of my rotation), but my volleys are still hurting my game.

Monday Jun 27, 2005 #

Note
slept:6.5

Worked late, and didn't have time to do something active. The past few weeks have been not very athletically oriented, despite the fact that I've recovered (mostly) from my knee pain and it is summer. I need to refocus.

Saturday Jun 25, 2005 #

Paddling (Canoe) 3:00:00 [1] 16.53 km (10:53 / km)
slept:9.0

Canoed the Islands.

Thursday Jun 23, 2005 #

Tennis 30:00 [1]

Tennis with Sparkes. I won the set, 6 games to 1.

I had some nice serves. My volleys have started to improve as well.

Note
slept:6.5

Tried to go for a run with Mick, but my ITB started to give some discomfort.

Perhaps I need to consider getting new shoes.

Tuesday Jun 21, 2005 #

Volleyball 1:00:00 [1]

We lost three games to the best team. We are currently in 2nd place.

Running 46:00 [2] 7.47 km (6:09 / km)
slept:6.5 shoes: asics

Running with Sparkes again. Fun, but a pretty slow pace. I haven't done a tempo run for quite a while. I may go Orienteering or to Sparkes' Running Room clinic tonite.

Note

Lake Ontario by my house was even colder today. I need to go on a sunny day with placid water. Or I could go to the shallow water at Lakeview Park.

Monday Jun 20, 2005 #

Strength/Weight 45:00 [3]

Back and Bis. I was going to go running when I got home, but instead, I added some expoy to my canoe.

Sunday Jun 19, 2005 #

Paddling (Canoe) 3:00:00 [2] 10.0 km (18:00 / km)

Paddled up the Black River, from the Bridge at Chisholm Trail, with my Dad. The water was very fast, so going upstream was very challenging (and somewhat boring). We got to what I call "Big Bend Campsite" before turning around. When we paddled downstream, we were traveling about 9 km/hr.

Afterwards, we took my Dad's truck up the Black River road, to Victoria Falls, the best kept secret in Cottage Country. The tanin-stained water was very turbulent--it looked like foaming rootbeer.

Running 40:00 [3] 6.21 km (6:26 / km)
shoes: asics

Ran with Sparkes around Oshawa. A slow pace, but I couldn't manage much more.

Note

Tried to do some open water swimming by my house, but found the water to still be very cold. Maybe on a sunnier day.

Saturday Jun 18, 2005 #

Running race 3:30:00 [3] 17.0 km (12:21 / km)
shoes: asics

Competed in the Toronto Amazing Race. We had an average time, but Sparkes' team won the event. More running than I expected so I ended up being very happy with the experience.

Tennis 30:00 [1]
shoes: asics

In an effort to redeem myself after being beaten in the Amazing Race, I destroyed Sparkes in tennis, 6 games to love. My power serve is starting to come back.

Wednesday Jun 15, 2005 #

Running 1:05:00 [3] 10.2 km (6:22 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: asics

Ran from the Old Mill to Scarlett or Eglinton, not sure which. That's about 10.2km, which is a ridiculously slow pace. It was a very humid and smoggy day, though.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1] 4.0 km (22:30 / km)
shoes: asics

Did a walk-run (mostly walk) orienteering course with Tania. Not very good exercise, but it at least was some o practice. It was amazing to see how different Sunnybrook looks in the summer.

Tuesday Jun 14, 2005 #

Volleyball 1:00:00 [1]

Monday Jun 13, 2005 #

Note

Spent some more time at Canadian Tire getting car fixed.

Sunday Jun 12, 2005 #

Running warm up/down 15 [2]
shoes: saucony

pre-race warm up with mick.

Orienteering race 1:05:00 [5]
shoes: asics

I had a lot of fun at this race, even though I did poorly, partly due to my lack of physical conditioning. I didn't see the map cases being handed out, and my map sustained some significant damage which affected my navigation. I must remember to get a map case in the future.

Hmm..two rest days in a row. X-thursdays on the Toronto Islands.

Wednesday Jun 8, 2005 #

Note
slept:8.0 (rest day)

I went to the gym for a swim, but there was an aquafit class there. So I left, to go to Orienteering, but I got stuck in traffic, so I just went home and went to sleep. Man, I'm tired all of the time lately.

I've been finding that fitness has been getting in the way of other responsibilities.

Tuesday Jun 7, 2005 #

Strength/Weight 45:00 [3]
slept:6.0

Shoulders, Obliques, Triceps. I didn't feel very stong today.

Running 1:00:00 [5] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +140m 9:19 / mi
shoes: asics

I took another go at what I've started to call the grouge grind...the GTA's own grouse grind, in the Rouge. I definitely need more sleep at night.

Monday Jun 6, 2005 #

Running hills 30:00 [5] 4.0 km (7:30 / km) +70m 6:54 / km
slept:6.5 shoes: asics

I have some water in my ear from swimming on the weekend, and it is giving me vertigo. To try to jostle it loose, I ran up the Beare Road Landfill, starting in the Rouge Valley a few times, followed by a run/jog downhill. This was fun and somewhat challenging. It is probably the best steep/long climb in the eastern GTA. I think I'll go back and do some more tonight (June 7). My distance and climb figures are estimates. I'm still not getting enough sleep.

Strength/Weight (Back) 45:00 [3]

Back, Abs, some biceps, but they felt toasted.

Running 10:00 [1]
shoes: asics

On my way home, I drove by Sparkes as she was on her run. I joined her for a bit.

Sunday Jun 5, 2005 #

Paddling (Canoe) 4:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (24:00 / km)

Some very easy paddling combined with a very challenging exploratory portage from Black Lake to Sheldon Lake. Beautfiul, but very tiring. I must go back to this place again.

Swimming 1:00:00 [1]

Lots of random cliff-jumping, rope swinging, and general open water (lake) swimming. Ah, summer.

Saturday Jun 4, 2005 #

Paddling (Canoe) 3:00:00 [1] 12.1 km (14:53 / km)

Man. A very meditative (almost spiritual) paddling experience on Lake Ontario, from my house to Haydenshore. Very calm water. At one point, I was as far out into the lake as some of the sailboats.

Did some very good work on my J-stroke.

Friday Jun 3, 2005 #

Strength/Weight 30:00 [3]

A nice chest/tri work out. The weights were pretty busy for a Friday.

Stairs (Stair-climber) 10:00 [4]

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Running 20:00 [2]
shoes: asics

I ran on the treadmill. Slowly worked the speed up to 8.0 mph. No significant knee problems, but some twinges.

Swimming 20:00 [2] 0.27 km (1:14:04 / km)

Didn't worry about form in this session...just wanted to get a endurance swim in. Upper body was pretty toasted from the weight work-out I had just completed.

Thursday Jun 2, 2005 #

Paddling (Canoe) 3:00:00 [1] 10.5 km (17:09 / km)
slept:6.0

Paddled from Cherry Beach up the Don River to just past Bloor Street with Mick. The actual distance was probably a bit more, as I was "messing with my J-stroke" for a lot of the return trip, resulting in lots of random veering off-course.

At times, we were going faster than traffic on the DVP.

The Don is a very sketchy river. However, we did see lots of beaver. The rodent kind.

Running 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)

Jogged over to get the canoe shuttle vehicle.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3] ** 6.2 km (14:31 / km)
17c slept:6.0 shoes: asics

Wednesday Night Park session in G Ross Lord Park. I've raced in this area once or twice before, but I found the controls very difficult to find for some reason. I perservered and managed to find all of them, but boy, did I waste a lot of time.
