Ampersand because I love you, on my drive back day. Left the trailhead before 9 and was back to my car by noon. I was the 6th hiker of the day on the mountain, but I was passed by 70 hikers coming up on my way back down--the parking lot was crazy. Ampy was predictably beautiful.

Tabletop (4427). This is another officially unofficial trail, but was ridiculously easy to follow. I had the summit all to myself, but as I was leaving, I was passed by a herd of 30 hikers, far too many for the very small summit.

This was a very easy hike, but my knee was starting to be a little sore.

Later, I went for a swim in Heart Lake, where a wedding was happening. It was weird to be a sweaty hiker mingling with the well dressed guests. While wearing nothing but a bathing suit, I tried to sneak into wedding photos.

I am now an ADK 16'er. 1/3 done.

Dix, which is a 4857 foot hill. One of the neat things about this hill is the number of slides on its sides. The trail goes part way up one of these slides. Very pretty. I found this hike to be easy, as I was well rested from the day before.

Note

I was still tired from the Rocky Peak Ridge hike, so I took the day off and drove around the area.

One of the neat things about this week of hiking was that I was able to start hikes from many of the different trailheads, many of which I had never been to before.

Hiking 5:00:00 [1] 15.0 km (20:00 / km) +850m 15:35 / km

Big Slide via The Brothers, with a loop down near the Johns Brook Lodge. I hiked most of this one with an older woman that I ran into along the trail. She was from Texas. Later, she bought me beer at the Ausable Inn. This hill is 4240 feet.

Rocky Peak Ridge. When I went up Giant a couple of years ago, my partner didn't have the enthusiasm to go for Rocky (it adds about 3 miles). So, I went back along this longer, ridgeline route. My book calls it one of the best hikes in the Adirondacks during fall season, because so much of it is in the open. The views are great.

The interesting thing about this route is that the ascent (4700 feet) is more than the elevation of the entire mountain (4420) because it climbs up and down a couple of intervening peaks. I found this hike to be pretty tiring--probably the hardest one I've done in this area.

Hiking 7:00:00 [1] 17.4 km (24:08 / km) +1005m 18:44 / km

Algonquin-Boundary-Iroqouis-Boundary-Algonquin. I was glad to visit Algonquin Peak again because it is so lovely. I continued on over to Iroqouis, on a trail that is not "officially" marked, but is nevertheless very easy to follow. It was icy on Al when I walked up, but it had melted by the time I went down. The ice had formed beautiful patterns on the vegetation. Iroq is 4840 feet, Al is 5114.

Hiking 2:30:00 [1] 10.4 km (14:25 / km) +451m 11:51 / km

Scarface. Left home in the morning, plus the 5 or 6 hour drive. so I didn't have enough time to visit one of the higher peaks. It rained most of the hike, which was OK. Scarface is 3088 feet, and has only limited views.

Rollerblade 1:00:00 [1]

Rollerblade around Kingston. Rollerbladed by the house my dad grew up in. It has been turned into student housing and a laundromat. A bunch of skinny second year Queens students were sitting on the front steps, as if they owned the place. Get off that, you fat bitches. Don't you know this is going to be a museum one day?

Sadly, in truth, the only thing that can protect this house from atrophic tenancy is me convincing the city government that Sir John A lived here once. Where's the plaque?

In other news, I was pulled over by the police for rollerblading on the sidewalk. Fortunately, they let me off without a ticket. I was going to point out to him that I wasn't on the sidewalk (I was on the road), but since I was actually moving in the wrong direction on a one way street, I decided to not push my luck.

Hiking 5:00:00 [4] 8.0 km (37:30 / km)
shoes: Raichle Kootenay 5

During this past winter, I had walked in along a ridge from Coon Lake, to near McGee Lake. At that time, I was impressed with the views and the potential for backcountry swimming.

The year's swimming days are winding down, so today I repeated this trip. The views were a little more grown in, but still excellent. The swimming was good too, but very short as I was tight for time. I found this trailess walking to be very tiring and slow.

It looks like someone went in several years ago and flagged a trail in spots (and added a few cairns), so I clearly am not the first person with the idea of walking to the lake along the ridge--someone has even cleared out a little parking spot on the side of the cottage road. I noticed that there were one or two boats cached on McGee Lake. I wonder how they got in there--maybe there is a trail from the east.

Also: spotted an abandoned grow op. That's the second one of the year.

Hiking 2:00:00 [2] 5.0 km (24:00 / km)
shoes: Raichle Kootenay 5

While looking at a topo, I noticed that there was a little "mountain" feature that rises dramatically above the landscape. Murphy and I drove out there today and walked up it. It had good views to the south and west, although there was a quarry right next to it. We took some pictures and did some off trail woods walking.

Later, I tried to walk over to the lake next to the hill (it is called Mountain Lake), but there weren't any good spots that were clearly public land.
