Great course at Winnewanna.

Despite losing to Igor on one relatively straightforward control, I am satisfied because: I couldn't use my glasses most of the run, and I arrived late which usually makes me stress and error-prone.

Not 100% clean, but good. If I could get some more speed down on the fast legs, it would really be fun!

~~

1 - trail to power line, find place to turn in with easy running, cross spur, look for hill. Igor's version is better
2. Mean to run right at it, green be darned, but was not tidy on compass and slid down the hill, then misread the trail bend so cut in wrong, but corrected okay.
3. It's possible the swamp was faster! Some green in there, and some company, I think BNM and Ken L.
4. Nice swamp crossing! I misread a gentle road bend as the sharper turn by the number four, so I jumped, then saw a swamp and went for it, but noticed all the green and gave up since I was bamboozled by parallel. Glasses off, as they were useless. Stuck in bag. I have 20/50 vision, so I lose sharpness of features beyond a few dozen meters.
5. Crappy exit (will work on that....), the I figured because this was a known danger zone, I'd go via 8 and string depressions until switching to hills with rocks. Lost my line slightly, so tried to re-anchor with the green-ringed depression, but I picked up the two small erosion gullies which made me certain.
6. No navigation here, set a compass and look for a big hill and avoid climb when possible.

7. Previously, I strung together trees to hold a bearing, but today, I noticed some clear shots through trees, and maybe that's a faster way to run straight, spot some runnable route on the bearing. Deliberately took valley to small depression for solidness, then compass bearing to c.
8. Straight! How did I not see the orange flag when I crossed the marsh? That's just FOCUS! Then got the banana depression, then compass and over the spur to 8.
9. Carnage! Tried to avoid climb, ended up sort of a terrace level above intended, then corrected from trail, found another flag (36 Green!), decided Mark V doesn't miss hang, so I had to relocate from trail. ARGH but lesson learned.
10. Regain confidence by not going cross country. Cut in early but it doesn't really save much/any climb.
11. Rounded corner, definitely good. Then find the small trail and head into swamp from last open hill.
12. Already soaked, no question! Straight! Elephant tracks until you see me and Igor diverge. Mine wasn't too bad, hard to run but not bad walking.
Brief panic seeing 55 after I punched my 45. Have I been checking c numbers? We hope so! Straight more swamp crossing to finish, esp. knowing I didn't have a blazing kick left.

Dark to start o run with Cris. Black through 3, then very slowly lighting up until around 7, then light off 8.

Absolutely fantastic course - so much runnability, hardly any scratch on my route.

Al sent me a slightly different version, so I ran to a different 13 than other competitors.

Not fast enough to scalp Dale. Or Rick, just Phil. Darkness was a factor to #2 and added some distance to #4, and took a little speed off through the fast pick section 5-6-7. Curious how it would have played out in daylight, since you can close in with more confidence that trying to make sure your gps track will confirm your position.

Satisfied though. Still have a couple things to concentrate on: bearing, distance, simpler attacks.

Long if bored:

S-1: Thought about around, then elected for lake trail
1-2: DNR truck! at the turn around. Running! I got nervous and took a less than desired jump into the woods.
2-3: Day time, might have tried the reentrant to saddle, but at night definitely using the swamp
3-4: Wasn't paying enough attention to direction on exit, meant to go straight to that low flattish hill due S of c, so just corrected when we hit that small round marsh inlet and went up the spur. Slightly careful on top, but easy to track position.
4-5: Al's killing me with these subtle placements at night! I love it! Hit the wide spur by skirting the low area and try to grab a reentrant in it.
5-6: Aim at wide spur hitting trail, then over the hill - surety of attack over climb avoidance at night
6-7: Saddle, reentrant, collect
7-8: Very nervous, so decided to work the big spur and use the flag area, to pick up the wide spur and then the "hammerhead" spur just before the depression.
8-9: Exit through another small depression to ensure one of them was right, hahahaha. I like Ati's route to the trail better than mine, and I tried to run fast through the low open area , but drifted north in the saddle and had to correct. Should have aimed at the guarding hill, fixed it by using swamp to tuck back in.
9-10: Mostly only wanted to get to the hill first, then managed to keep it pretty flat. I see Al is a huge fan of depressions in reentrants.
10-11: Similar to the summer streamer leg - get to the ditch, compass and bearing, sweep the reentrants off the spine.
11-12: Math not looking good. Dale's got me skunked. Cris, ready for 15 minutes of pain?? Trail looked faster, Ati's route is nice though.
12-13: My 13 was on the spur NNE of the real 13, so I just crossed and picked up the big middle swamp.
13-14: Since I was close enough to the road, I went to it to make brain easier and set up attack for 14, using the prominent reentrant hitting Torn Shirt and Blue/Yellow. I think from actual trail, knowing that green can be awful, trail to trail to reentrant is good. My compass and bearing got me right to the ditch, no issues.
14-F: Out to trail, then through woods, but Ati was faster via trail, noted.
