Can you call it orienteering when you spend most of your time wandering aimlessly?....my race Sunday?...one word: disaster, and it began early....Control one split? one hour 13 minutes.....(stunned silence).....listen, i could not believe it either.....after thinking I had acquired a respectable level of navigation skill, Sundays race taught me that I might be dillusional....to say that it had not affected my confidence would be a lie but as Scarlet said "tomorrow is another day".....I only got 7 of 16 controls in 3 hours....bad, bad, bad....actually did decent except for the first and last controls that I got but after #1 I realized all was lost.....I have only DNF'd 2 races in 25 years of endurance sports and this is one of them. Broken ski in a ski marathon was the other....Anyone got advice on how to come back from disaster???

I know that one mistake was not incorporating the fact that the map had 20ft contour lines....but I had no excuse, Ian mentioned this as I was checking in but I did not take it to heart on the difference it would create in reading the map.....I was looking for #1 to low before I remembered that the ridgeline I as looking on was rep'd by only ONE line...and I needed to go deeper....all my fault....

trail run under the lights at French with Kari....legs stiff from my misadventure earlier in the day....I explained to her that she should she be glad that she did not run me or she might wonder if I know anything about navigation....

ran Adventure Run #1 after a few revisions...still not finalized....I want to do some more tweaking....Hyland has very little good open wood sections and I am trying to keep it from being scrubby, as well as making it doable for a night event keeping veterans and novices in mind....

ran trails at French with Kari.....we ran about 20 minutes at tempo..that part was a 4...quick but effective workout....trying to build speed so that Kari can go 1:55 in the half...if the course is flat she might have a shot.....I think we are both at 2 flat speed but may be able to bring it down a few more minutes in the next 5 weeks....

Run on roads with Kari...4x5 minutes cruise intervals to build some speed...we both plan on doing half marathons in late October....Kari hopes to go sub 2 hours so we will try to build some speed here and there...we will see....

Kari and I went to Hyland to test Adventure Run #1 course at Hyland....I let her navigate and backed her up here and there...she did good....

The course ran well....not as much open woods as I would like...still thinking of modifications to insure a fair night course and minimizing "scrubby" areas...

run around the French Trails and neighborhood with Kari...decided not to do the triathlon...still recovering from being sick and was not just wasnt it to a all out effort....helped at triathlon before running....nice "kick around" day...

around Medicine Lake with Kari..still not feeling great so we ran slow....my triathlon tomorrow is up in the air...not sure I want to do it not feeling 100%....probably will not decide until tomorrow morning....still plan on going out and rooting others on if I decide not to do it...

funny,...we did not know that Ian and crew were out hiking in Colorado the same week...we were both doing different hikes on Thursday....interesting reading Ians log on Colorado...it would have been funny to run into the crew on the mountain....

power walked with Kari to Medicine Lake for 50 minutes but did not log it...did not feel good enough to run...not feeling good again....punting the 24 hour AR was a good decision...sinus infection is hanging on....we both got sick on the cruise and had to visit the med clinic on the boat for antibiotics. A third of our bill was med charges....

2 loops at Wirth with Kari....we broke our own personal best with a 18:10 lap tonight....hopeing to go under 18 before the season ends.....just a few clicks away.....

run in downtown Denver with Kari and her newlywed friend Rachel....the first 5 minutes were terrible...I could not breathe but it got better....

Climbed Hallets Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park....amazing hike and views....my first real mountain hike....Kari was tough and she actually took the heavier pack from me 2/3rds of the way up....we summited and had amazing 360 view as clouds rolled in....a crack of thunder saw us running the trail for a mile back to tree line on very tired legs....our time of 4:58 for the ascent and descent seems pretty decent....I think we were only 2 of 5 people that summited Hallets on this day....I want to do more of this type of thing....3239 ft of elevation gain topping out at X?....9.8 miles...
