warmup swim before triathlon start...
Swimming race 9:50 [4] 0.33 mi (29:47 / mi)
dolphined the shallows at the start and got out ahead of my heat of 50 plus participants (USAT rules call that you compete in the age you are at the end of the calendar year)....concentrated on quick turnover and keeping my foot on the accelerator....popped out of the water 2nd in my AG,,,,just seconds off the lead guy....25th best split out of 379 finishers...very good swim for me...

lost 12 seconds struggling to get my wet suit off my ankles...very ragged....and I am usually very smooth at this....saw the guy that lead the age group bike out.....I knew I really didnt have a chance to beat him (never had)...

very painful bike as I worked hard to turn over the biggest gear I could on this flat course....worked it very hard and managed 21.4 mph average...saw a 51 AGer (age written on calf) go by me going very hard about 4 miles in to the bike.....no way to stay with him....figured I was in 3rd now.....the same split as last year...53rd ranked split out of 379 finishers.....very happy with my effort on the bike.....

Ran as hard as possible and was a little sluggish......25 seconds off my split from last year but I pushed with everything I had....managed to hold off any challenge...111th of 379 on the run split....not pretty but it got the job done.....I was spent at the end...

total time 1:13:49....finished 3rd of 15 in my age group and 57th of 379 finishers in the race....

given the types of workouts I have done this year I was happy with the result.....

TNT urban Score O....fun course with lots of street navigation and jumping in the creek on the USGS map....did 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9...worked perfectly.....probably lost about 6 minutes total looking around the control circles at times to locate the streamers....splits for Pete : ) :

suprised my HR was as high as it was....did not feel that hard....whereas at the Tri Loppet a 154 HR average felt very hard.....

Tri Loppet paddle with Kari....hmmmm....last year we split the paddle in a little over 50 minutes and we were supposedly in a faster boat this year....it wasn't faster for us....not sure what happen...we did had some trouble in the turns with this boat but we decided next year to go back to a Minn II...disappointing paddle for us...

...boy, running out of the canoe is tougher than any bike to run transition in a swim tri.....I noticed my Heart Rate was not as high at some points in this hilly, fun, trail run even though I felt like I was pushing hard...wanted to walk at some points but kept pushing....my split was still over a minute slower this year....wierd after others races had indidcated my running was on par and better than last year...crazy fun course....

wow....a great course for this type of race...varied...even though we did not go on the Wirth mt bike trails it had enough singletrack and off road segments that allowed you to use some bike handling skills...with 350 people in the race it was probably wise not to go on the Wirth mt bike trails...came back a bit with a good biking effort...got cought behind people just a bit but passed fairly quickly....some tough hills thrown in and some put your head down and go sections...great fun....

1:57:58 overall time....154 average HR which seems a bit low but likely due to the large paddling section where a lower HR is typical due to its focused upperbody effort.....49 of 110 male doubles....61 out of 188 total doubles...

this race is interesting because it is skewed towards the paddling leg which makes it a paddlers race...a discipline most do not train for seriously...

definately not as good as last years result....a little off the mark...

Paddled the SCR with Kari at Ketter Canoe...we had wondered if this boat will be to tippy for us...id we get some big waves tomorow it could be interesteing but ultimately we decided to go with it hoping it will give ua a decent paddle split....

10x100 in slightly sub 1:26 on 2:00....felt rough and it was a hard effort to make the interval goal time of 1:25...a little disappointed I was did not average that....I need to swim two more workouts before my next triathlon on the 30th in hopes of sharpening my speed just a bit.......

...got another spin on the tri bike....waited just long enough to get a bit wet.....40:08 on Old Hoigaards loop...including detour and no short cut) felt pretty good but the bike computer is not funcitioning so who knows????

...unlogged 13 mile ride with Kari...biked to downtown with stops at the Juneteenth festival, Stone Arch Bridge festival, Dunn Bros downtown and Cuppa Java for a beer in Bryn Mawr...I think we rode for 1:30 at a very casual pace as we continue to discover the sights that Downtown has to offer...

Two loops for TnT....I guess the idea of Time Trialing the loop with others spurred me on and I set a PB on the first loop in 16:50 and then followed that up with another PB of 16:38....extremely happy with that....Kari PB'd to a 17:05....I will be looking for a sub 16 before summers end and perhaps a sub 15:30 before the snow flies...

..hiked with Kari and Afton....used our hiking poles just to see what they were like....recovery workout....

...unlogged bike ride up to Bryn Mawr to the cuppa java...guess what?....they serve more than Java in those cuppa's....$2 a beer night at the cute little coffee shop....after $10 worth of beer and a grill cheese sandwich Kari and I began to find some humor in our race the day before....our bike back through some neighborhood streets was more fun than normal and we even decided to take a portion of the Wirth mt bike trail home......we were planning to do the log pile obstacle and big rock garden but decided against it because of our $10 bike buzz....

started out the AR with an O section...kept pace down to a reasonable level knowing we are not going to break away from anyone...I drifted away from the crowd a bit on on point in a reentrant thinking I knew better (I didnt) that cost us 3 minutes and we missed a trail on the long multi trail back to the start...about 8 minutes of mistakes but I know its not the end of the world....and its a long race...

transition from O to kayak/special test....yep, this is where our race began to have major problems...we had to get our kayak ready and then pull it over to a line and throw the rescure throw bag over our kayak from about 20 meters....we learned that we did not know these new kayaks very well and it took us forever to set up the straps for the seats...we did not know how to do it and took a long time trying to figure it out....then after my 2 for 2 throws Kari took 4 throws to gt it over twice...each time you had to re stuff the bag so each missed throw had you losing 5-7 minutes...between the strap problems and missing throws we lost easily 17 extra minutes...frustrating as teams came and left...

...paddliing kayak on the St Croix for a couple of CP's....time is an estimate...the wind came up and we did not get into our normal paddle groove....we could tell we were off the back a bit and did not really make any progress on other teams...I still felt like my seat was not strapped in at the right angle and it had to be restrapped at some point.....usually this is a stronger discipline for us but not today....I think many teams struggled in the wind however....

....I threw the kayak on my head and portaged uphill while Kari brought our gear....good move after we both carried on the first portage...this went pretty well...

mandatory 10 minute transition to clean and roll kayak.....this worked well...better than the roll and go method in the past that encouraged teams to do a sloppy job..

basically a street O using mapquest type maps...Kari and I did very well on this section passing teams and getting back into the race a bit...as usual we met up with "the boys" as Kari calls them...aka "Off the Map"....we always seems to connect in with ziggyr at some point in the race and this race was no difference.....we only lost 3 minutes at most on hesitation/stopping and recording...only one slight bobble with a wrong turn on a new unmapped road...i was wrinting down the control words on my map as we were rolling....our best section of the race..I think we moved from 5th 2 person coed to 3rd on this section and 10 minuites down from 1st in 2 person coed....as ziggyr mentioned some teams may have done some points out of order...and saved time......bummer when this happens in AR....as Ian says the best way to counter act this is through course design...

transition/gear check and special test....bury a softball with your shovel...did this quickly....we have learned to make our gear accessible and easy to check....
Orienteering race 1:07:00 [4]
....took off on O course looking to make up some time....clicked off the first 3 of 6 points with no problem...the 3rd to the last point was CP 15...the clue said "ravine" but it was located about 2 contour lines up....I navigated right to the spot in the deep ravine but did not see it...after a few up and backs to search the ravine we located t about 8 meters up on the south side on the ravine...that wasnt so bad but JUST as we found it the next place coed team was coming down the side of the ravine and we led them right to it....I dont think they would have gotten it that quickly if we had not led them to it....disheartening in the moment...most teams had the same problem with this point expecting it to be in the center of the ravine...

We hit CP 16 as the same time with the other team, battling for 3rd, and then I made a decision to take a risky route to CP 17 to try and move ahead of the team with us and perhaps leap frog the next team up...we went down to the beach , along the river bed looking for a small trail back up a gully to CP 17..the last control...unfortunately we over shot it (vegetation and no clear attack point from the shore line) and lost 10 minutes on this point along with two places to finish 5th....I told Kari was a risky move but wanted to give it a try...I apoligized for a poor decision and we finished knowing we lost a good 25-35 minutes from our capabilities...

we got a great workout and realized we were likely due for some major errors that we have avoided in our AR's the last year.....we should be better prepared and ready to have a better race at the MNOC Adv-O....

swim at Buffalo Tri Sprint.....managed to execute a good swim time while weaving and bobbing around all the slower swimmers....I started in the last wave, wave 20........I had people to negotiate the entore .25 mile....I suspect it might have been a bit short....

....windy bike....just averaged 20 mph and was :40 slower than last years split......a little disappointed in that....still passed people like crazy....794 people in the race.........

....3 mile run off the bike...after losing some time on the bike a made up and then some with my run.....split was 1:40 faster than last year.....cool weather made for fast running and I took advantage of it....accurate 3 miles?...I doubt it...a bit short I would guess....

Score O and Lake Elmo....Kari and I headed out and got 23,1,21,8,22,24,14,15,17,6,12,11,9,4...although we had written on our control card that we got 13 controls we actually got 14...I had a good navigation day and enjoyed the openess of the course.... the only mistakes of note were going 23,1,21...would have been better going 1,23,21..probably lost a minute there and running by 9 on the ridge...it was off the side a bit in thick vegetation...lost :30 there......I keep trying to be conservative on my "get back" plan but once again we were left to run our guts out to get to the finish before time ran out....made it by a second....I think we maximized of efforts and did the best score that we were capable of....
