 | Hike 1:04:05 [1] | |
| |
| ..hiked with Kari and Afton....used our hiking poles just to see what they were like....recovery workout.... |
 | Note | |
| |
| ...unlogged bike ride up to Bryn Mawr to the cuppa java...guess what?....they serve more than Java in those cuppa's....$2 a beer night at the cute little coffee shop....after $10 worth of beer and a grill cheese sandwich Kari and I began to find some humor in our race the day before....our bike back through some neighborhood streets was more fun than normal and we even decided to take a portion of the Wirth mt bike trail home......we were planning to do the log pile obstacle and big rock garden but decided against it because of our $10 bike buzz.... |
Saturday Jun 9 |
 | Orienteering race 58:16 [4] | |
| |
| started out the AR with an O section...kept pace down to a reasonable level knowing we are not going to break away from anyone...I drifted away from the crowd a bit on on point in a reentrant thinking I knew better (I didnt) that cost us 3 minutes and we missed a trail on the long multi trail back to the start...about 8 minutes of mistakes but I know its not the end of the world....and its a long race... |
 | transitions 31:29 [3] | |
| |
| transition from O to kayak/special test....yep, this is where our race began to have major problems...we had to get our kayak ready and then pull it over to a line and throw the rescure throw bag over our kayak from about 20 meters....we learned that we did not know these new kayaks very well and it took us forever to set up the straps for the seats...we did not know how to do it and took a long time trying to figure it out....then after my 2 for 2 throws Kari took 4 throws to gt it over twice...each time you had to re stuff the bag so each missed throw had you losing 5-7 minutes...between the strap problems and missing throws we lost easily 17 extra minutes...frustrating as teams came and left... |
 | Portage 14:00 [3] | |
| |
| Portage kayak 1/2 mile? to put in on the St Croix..... |
 | Paddling 1:09:00 [3] | |
| |
| ...paddliing kayak on the St Croix for a couple of CP's....time is an estimate...the wind came up and we did not get into our normal paddle groove....we could tell we were off the back a bit and did not really make any progress on other teams...I still felt like my seat was not strapped in at the right angle and it had to be restrapped at some point.....usually this is a stronger discipline for us but not today....I think many teams struggled in the wind however.... |
 | Portage race 17:00 [4] | |
| |
| ....I threw the kayak on my head and portaged uphill while Kari brought our gear....good move after we both carried on the first portage...this went pretty well... |
 | transitions 10:00 [3] | |
| |
| mandatory 10 minute transition to clean and roll kayak.....this worked well...better than the roll and go method in the past that encouraged teams to do a sloppy job.. |
 | transitions 2:00 [3] | |
| |
| transition to bikes... |
 | Mt Bike race 58:00 [4] | |
| |
| basically a street O using mapquest type maps...Kari and I did very well on this section passing teams and getting back into the race a bit...as usual we met up with "the boys" as Kari calls them...aka "Off the Map"....we always seems to connect in with ziggyr at some point in the race and this race was no difference.....we only lost 3 minutes at most on hesitation/stopping and recording...only one slight bobble with a wrong turn on a new unmapped road...i was wrinting down the control words on my map as we were rolling....our best section of the race..I think we moved from 5th 2 person coed to 3rd on this section and 10 minuites down from 1st in 2 person coed....as ziggyr mentioned some teams may have done some points out of order...and saved time......bummer when this happens in AR....as Ian says the best way to counter act this is through course design... |
 | transitions 4:00 [4] | |
| |
| transition/gear check and special test....bury a softball with your shovel...did this quickly....we have learned to make our gear accessible and easy to check.... |
 | Orienteering race 1:07:00 [4] | |
| |
| ....took off on O course looking to make up some time....clicked off the first 3 of 6 points with no problem...the 3rd to the last point was CP 15...the clue said "ravine" but it was located about 2 contour lines up....I navigated right to the spot in the deep ravine but did not see it...after a few up and backs to search the ravine we located t about 8 meters up on the south side on the ravine...that wasnt so bad but JUST as we found it the next place coed team was coming down the side of the ravine and we led them right to it....I dont think they would have gotten it that quickly if we had not led them to it....disheartening in the moment...most teams had the same problem with this point expecting it to be in the center of the ravine...
We hit CP 16 as the same time with the other team, battling for 3rd, and then I made a decision to take a risky route to CP 17 to try and move ahead of the team with us and perhaps leap frog the next team up...we went down to the beach , along the river bed looking for a small trail back up a gully to CP 17..the last control...unfortunately we over shot it (vegetation and no clear attack point from the shore line) and lost 10 minutes on this point along with two places to finish 5th....I told Kari was a risky move but wanted to give it a try...I apoligized for a poor decision and we finished knowing we lost a good 25-35 minutes from our capabilities...
we got a great workout and realized we were likely due for some major errors that we have avoided in our AR's the last year.....we should be better prepared and ready to have a better race at the MNOC Adv-O.... |
 | Note | |
| rhr:146 |
| ..I think our time for the AR was 5:21....but I need to check this....my watched got punched by accident....146 HR average for the entire event... |
