| Tiomila, 5th leg. It was supposed to be night leg, but leg times were guessed so badly wrong it was already daylight. All went just as I expected, slow and boring jogging with two or three minor 15 sec mistakes. Very bad run, but I knew it in advance and there was nothing I could do about it. I wonder how many weeks or months it will take untill I can run properly again, will it happen this season or not :(
Ran with GPS, so some gps data, Runoway etc will follow. Our team - Our best man ran first leg, but he didn't run as well as he can this time either. We were hanging around 100. place or litlle under until our 8yh leg runner, our oldest and most experienced runner, mispunched second last control. So our result was disq. For some reasond no-one told our last leg runner we were already DQ:d, so he didn't know about it. After two kilometers he fell and hit his toe badly (possibly broke bones, don't know yet) and also hit hamsring(?) to a stone and got some sort of muscle injury too. If he'd know about DQ he would have stopped right there, but now he thought it would be better to try to get result and he limbed the course. And heard at finish about the DQ. We can only hope the the injury isn't bad and it didn't get any worse during the run. I feel sorry for this all, anything like this should never happen. There was several teams in our two busses and noone had problems with SI this time. I ran with an older stick - my own stick was needed for longer legs - and I how it sometimes took quite long time to get a signal. The new sticks seems to be much faster than these old ones. Our 2nd leg runner didn't had mark from last control, but they were not trying do DQ him. The just asked if he could remember which unit he used. There was one malfunctioning unit at last contol, it happily beeped and flashed but no-one got proper mark in their e-card. They had to find and replace it with functional one. I don't know if they got no mark at all or was it just a control with wrong code. Who knows. But I can imagine what was going in his head when they first told him there was no mark from last control. --- About Tiomila 2007 - terrain wasn't very good, there must be lots of better terrains around there. But there was nice stadium, map was quite good, and I guess courses were well planned - I guess it's difficult to make any better courses on a terrain / map like that. What surprises me is how they could estimate times so wrong. Our accomodaiton - military tents - were 2 km away from the event centre. All too long distance to walk many times, so I visited the arena only twice. Once during women's relay and once for my own run. But I managed to find bubo - or actually bubo somehow managed to pick me up. Stora Tuna OK had a huge success there, especially in youth class. It's not easy to find someone there, lots of people and lots of space and hiding places. I saw many OK Linné runners but none of them was hairy enought to be BorisGr.

| Yesterday I got a draft of our new O map. I am supposed to plan our district champs adult courses on it, long and relay. There is lots of nice areas around Orimattila, but this must be one of the very best, it looks so damn good. There will be some tricky legs of type we don't usually much see around here. | ||

| Some GPS mistake data from sunday race.
Map, course, route: http://av.nettirasia.com/reitti/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi... Dot images, each dot is one second: 15 sec mistake at #2. I left #1 without any plan, passed the highest bare rock knoll without knowing it. Just before the green I had to guess which knoll I am on, guessed wrong and it took few seconds to figure it (+ some extra distance). It's classical example of mistake, I made something wrong 200m earlier and paid for it 200 later. So mistake was not made near #2, it happenend right after #1. 5 sec stop 20 meters before #5. You can also see nicely how I went around the boulder. zigzag before #7, about 3-5 sec lost. I didn't bother to correct/keep my direction at the knoll with the clif. These were recorded with Globalsat GH-615. The data seems to be just as good as Forerunner x05 data.

| Today I lost a big mapped training area, east from Helsinki. Training is not allowed there untill 2012, Jukola relay will be there. There is lots of other nice terrains around here of course, but it's kind of sad to think I'll have to wait 5 years (I'll be running H40 by then!)
If I got it right, this area is still available, but everyting south from here or even the southmost part of this map clip is part of the Jukola area: http://www.routegadget.net/gpsoblog/cgi-bin/reitti...

| About the GPS issue:
-We use GPS receiver with 1 sec point interval. Also 2 sec interval may work, but any "smart recording" will not do. - Track smoothing algorithms may spoil the data. Avoid using them. I haven't tried, but for example FRWD's smart post processing may cause you problems. - I have tried Forerunner 205&306 and Globalsat GH-615, both work just fine. These examples are done with Fore 305 and 205 devices.
Leg 2-3 Runner one Map 1 1. Control, punch. Start about right direction, hesitating route choice. 2. Stop, still trying to decide which way to go. 3. Stop - go - Stop - go - Stop - and finally with good speed to the path. Map 2 1. At path it looks like still some hesitating can be seen. Maybe checking is it he right path or what spot of the path we are. 2. On path, a stop to read map. Still unsure and hesitating. Map 3 1. Path crossing, full stop to to check something(?). 2. Leaving the path, very very slowly and carefully. 3. Good speed in forest, 4. stop to check direction/location. Map 4 1-2-3. Stops, slowling down, reading map. 4. Approaching slowly to spot the flag. 5. Punch, turn to right direction, making route choice. 6-7. Stops to check something... The same leg, runner two Map 1 1. Slowling down, reading map, then straight to control with great speed. 2. Punch 3. Leaving control to right direction, but using over 10 sec to make ruote choice. Apparently next leg wasn't much checked before control. 4. Still hesitating, finally decission to take the path, turn to that direction. 5-6. Making sure of something (had to go over a path here?). 7. Gerat speed to path and on path. Map 2 Good steady speed on path, no need slow down to check anyting. Map 3 1. leaving path, no hesitating, good speed. 2. Reading map, running ahad with good speed. Map 4 Good speed all the way from the path, here 1-2 reading the map to get located accurately, then nice approach to control. 3. Punch, leaving to the right direction, some 4. route choice and then smoothly towards the next control without any unnecessary stops. Leg 6, second half Runner one Map 5 1. Great speed on path, then full stop at path crossing, then to 2. forest. Maybe no idea which path crossing it was, first or second, 3-4 so had to check map to make sure and make direction corrections. 5. Step hill up to control. Runner two Map 5 1. Leaving path smoothly, right direction and without unnecessaty stops. 2. checkind direction, a little turn to left. 3. log way smoothly, here making sure to clinb up at the right place. 5. steep hill up to the control. As you can see, there was no mistakes here. We are analysing the good, succesful orienteering and we are trying to make it better. But sometimes it's usefull to take a look at also mistakes, so let's take a look at them next. Using Route Gadget RG is designed for drawing viewing routes on the web. It's not very good tool for accurate analysis, but you can find something out of it if you first draw your route as you thought you ran the coutse, and then you upload your gps track. If there is big differences somewhere, it's likely you had lost your map contact there and you are about to make mistake there. Here is one example
Yet an other mistake From control to right direaction, but then total blackout and a huge mistake. So what might have happenend? I guess this something like this. Right after leaving the control the focus was briefly lost. WHen it comes back, we had to try to relocate. But thumb didn't stay on the right spot of the map or we didn't trust it was on a right place, so we ended up guessing we were suddenly drifted 100m left. The it's logical to continue as we did and ended up to the wrong hill. If only could keep the thumb still we could have easily guessed it right, but sloppy thumb and lost focus together usually gives us disasters after disaster... OK, I guess/hope you got the point. Basicly it a lot like running/following behind and checking what the other person is doing out there. And the next and more importatn part is to think ways to improve, but it's an other isgue, maybe I'll write about it some other time. And what you need is a device accurate and sensitive enough with ability to record location every second.
| C • Is smart recording really bad? 7 | ||

Here is my last race at Barbate, Spain. Map: http://www.routegadget.net/gpsoblog/cgi-bin/reitti... Dot images: No comments this time, you can try figuring out what was going on. The start of the race, six first controls: image1 image2 image3 image4 image5 image6 image7 My ~ 20 sec boom at # 10: image8 --- It's fast terrain, even my speed was about 5 min/km or a bit faster in the beginning and got a more slow later in the deeper forest.

| Flu/cold/fever is over, rest and light training behind. Now it was time to check the damage by running my regular 6 km test run:
http://www.routegadget.net/run/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?... TIme was 25:18, it's almost 3 min more than three weeks ago. And also worst time ever. So I lost 30 sec/km in three weeks! And I don't have had any cold, cough etc for days now. Now I need to improve my running fitness about 35 sec/km and I have 10 days time left. Suggestions?

| Near home map. Getting used to new lamp. RG
Some comments about the lamp: Lamp was quite nice. I had some difficulties in a very dense bush because the light was so bright. I guess I need some practise to get used to the brightness. Also course/terrain was a bit too urban (Helsinki central park) to tell much about what it is to run in deep forest with this light. The head band loosened during the run, and I had to stop once to tighten it. The band and the material isn't as good as it should. I think may havet to get better head band. I kept the batter in he back pocket of my running tights and it worked well. I think I'll try again tonight.

| I'll put some lamp photos here. This is the frst one. Our head lamp arsenal. Can you pick the new one?
Now I noticed the carpet is yellow. This also is the last day for Bubo's photo contest and this is the only photo I have, so I must try my luck with this one. The new lamp: photo 1 and photo 2 Led with 15W power vs halogen 20 W (Mica) Led 9W vs halogen 20 W (Mica) Led 1W vs halogen 20 W (Mica) Led 15W vs halogen 20 W (Mica with nimh battery) vs halogen 20W (my stone age Silva with nicd battery) I don't have comparison photos of the broken Mila HID, but I am quite sure this led is a brighter that the Mila hid. They claimed Mila had about 950 lumens and this led should have only 830, but I guess Mila must have been closer to 700 lumen. Or at least this led look's a lot brihter. The led look very impressive in real life. Minna did dome test loops two days ago, and when she came back it looked like there was some forestry machine/trackor working or a trainn coming, it so bright and white it doesn't look like O head lamp light at all. I also compared this with one year old Lupine Edison X, and this led was far brighter. It seems like Lupine HID lights are used to dim quite fast, so you need to change the bulb/reflector pretty often if you use to lamp if you like to have bright light - and the bulb is pretty expensive. I believe led is the way to go at from now on. You even can drive it with different wattage to ge the light you need and as far as you need. EDIT: If you wonder: Li-ion battery weights about 200 g and it should give over 2.5 hours light with 15W power. I will keep it in the pack pocket of my running tights, so no battery vest needed.

| Head lamp testing, compared a tiny led lamp against my old 20W halogen. Too sick to run, just walked and jogged about 15 min. Minna ran the actual test course.
The new Mila HID got broken and I need to find a replacement. The led light we tested is one alternative, it's so tiny and light you don't need any battery vest with this.
