Event: Jukola 2016

11 PM

Orienteering race 1:20:12 [4] 10.7 km (7:30 / km)

Jukola 1st leg

http://online.jukola.com/tulokset/fi/j2016_ju/kilp...

Got quite tired at halfway and last loop was slow, and last two kms was just a fight against calf cramps. I had to stop once to stretch and soon after that I tripped and fell, could not get up without stretching while laying on the ground. I guess I lost 50 places in the last loop. Some running training might help I guess.

Slightly longer strory:

Jukola 1st leg. Warm up was mostly just hopping around in a tent and trash talking. I did not want to get my clothes wet. At start line I noticed Jan K was some rows in front of me. Did not see much other familiar faces around me. My start slot was second slot from right. Soon after start it was slight turn to rings and there it cot crowded, next turn was 100 deg to left, there I had good line and I could regain some places I lost for starting a bit slow to avoid injuries. Then from field to a narrow road, too crowded again to run properly, just slow jogging, there I noticed Jan K was in front of me. I figured my start was just fine and in line with the other unfit old farts with bad knees. Soon we entered the bush, people everywhere, when line stopped you just could not move to side and pass because all sides were already taken. it was a bit frustrating but I figured there is no hurry and big deal for me since I was the slow unfit one people tried to pass, not the one who tries to pass. I saw Nastolan Terä runner here. But soon I got bored and saw opportunity to take my own route and entered marsh alone and tried to hid trail end at he other side. I don't think I won anything but if you get possibility to get to run alone on thr way to #1 in jukola first leg you got to take it and it is never a bad choice, right?

Then to road, would have been plenty of room to accelerate and pass people but it was the opposite. Fitness isn't quite there. Here I saw our 5th team runner Tuomo in front of me. No changes passing him, he was too fast.I Hit #1 fine, easy, #2 was easy too, just got to use compass to make sure you hit it straight. #3 was TV control and I barely managed to make it to the TV, director moved on couple of seconds after I passed.

Then it became less crowded thre was plenty of people of course but not too crowdy. #4 easy, I must have had rightmost one since most seemed to be going more left. Slightly too straight to road on the way to #5, I entered wrong train I guess, fixed it by running road a bit. # #6 no problem other than I started to feel I will not be able to keep the pace for long. #7 at road I planned to do short cut to road and go left around, but most turned right. I figured there is white forest and beaten track already by now so figured that would do too, so stayed on train. Train went straight to the green mash in the middle, and not the white forest I thought. And guess who passed me in the middle of the greenest debris jungle, Jan K of course. Thought a moment for accelerating and following, but then figured I should rather slow down to survive this all the way to the finish. Our train went to control but not that optimal way we did not us the road at all, we just crossed it. #8 hesitated a bit, there a big knoll just before the control and I could not find it from the map. #9 was funny, I looked at compass several times and we were doing straight but still all people yelling codes were not yelling my code. So I when others started to panic I just past them and kept going to my (uncrowded) control. I saw lights ahead on the way to 10 and accelerated to catch them, I managed to keep contact but they climbed the hill and I figured were not going to my control so I turned right through green to my control. Should not have climbed that hill. That acceleration also killed me, I was exhausted and began to suffer. #12 a bad choice again for following others, I went left instead of right. Then trough arena, very tired already. Touch climb to #15 and again following wrong train, I figured it out early and steered straight to my flag but I must have missed the best beaten track. #16 with a train, not thinking much at all. #17 the same, #18 legs began to cramp and on the way to 19 I had to stop to stretch right calf to make it not cramp. After #19 I tripped and fell, both legs cramped, me on not being able to get up for cramps, people passing me on both sides. Finally got grip in my feet and managed to stretch them a bit and then succesfully pushed me up. Kept following lights jogging without bending knees and trying to point up with toes to avoid cramps. At field it got better and before I got in front of audience I again managed to do movements that maybe somewhat reminded running.

Not quite the kind of run you hope to do but that was result according to the shape I guess. Rest of our team ran pretty well and we ended up 190th and just barely lost to our 1st team. Actually we lost about the time I lost to our 1st team first leg runner.

Note

On the way to start i saw somone with Purva Bridejs O top and I though it might be andzs but the guy look way too young and fit for H45 so I though it was someone else. Now when Iook at start list he started 2 min after me so I guess I got that wrong. So if you read this sorry for not saying hello. But you really should have caught me by #5 for my poor start!

Suunto Games day2

I could feel right from the start that I will not be able to push the way I did the day before. Asthma/allergy was there and limiting way more that yesterday. I had poor start, trying to find tracks up to #1 to get celar fooring, but I failed to find best one as the ones I used took me way too much left. I ahd to corect my direction and runing walking uphill without any tracks there was touch. Also the poor state of my phisical performance was a bit shock. But I figured this will be long tough race so better just find a comfortable pace and not push all out agains the limiting astma would be the way to go. So I settled to a pace I felt I could keep and tied not to push more. During this settling I ran poorlu to #2 (hesitation, too much right) and not that well to #3, ~30 sec mistake at 4 (parallel error with cliffs, this may be result of me using now base plate instead of usual thumb for breaking my compass yesterday and not being able to keep my thumb on map the way I always do, so I may have missed the correct spot resulting as parallel error. I need to get thumb compass before Jukola. And #4 follwed by mistake at #5. I can't remember when I last time made mistakes or ran poor way all first 5 controls. But I knew it has been nothing that serious really, just 20 sec here and there, so I kept on doing my thing and then on it went just as usual. Maybe almost 2 mins lost together at 5 first legs, not a total disaster but unusual for me anyway.

Average hr was 8 beats lower then the day before and max barely got up to the average of yesterday's run despide pushing hills up in the end as hard as I could. Typical asthma restricted 2nd day run, all to familair and typical for me. The good thing is it usually is not that bad if the day before the race is a rest day.
