orienteering 1:56:00 [3] 11.27 km (10:18 / km)
Narrinyeri orienteering. Somehow managed to do over 11 km 7.7 km course! Took lots of track options.
I actually enjoyed doing a longer course and having a good 'tour' of the map. I was sloppy the whole way round, undershot 2 and 4, my 2 in particular should’ve been very straight forward. On the way to 8 when I wasn’t seeing the control as soon as I expected I was starting to have a familiar o-course conversation with myself along the lines of ‘ I am going to give up orienteering, I am too dumb for this sport ….I will just check that rock’ …control was there – I had been just a tad out on distance estimation and hadn’t gone far enough. I took too long to make a decision on the longest leg to 9 – and couldn’t find a little track I wanted so turned back to the main all the way round track – took 18 minutes on that leg – never lost and no trouble finding the control just took a long time to get there. I can see spots now that I should’ve been way more careful with my bearing eg south of the road as the handrails were vague on the ground and other spots eg my 15 I could’ve approached better. It felt like an epic all up, and I decided I need to wear long sleeves at Narrinyeri next time.
A goal of mine this year is to try to find ways of focusing better when on course. I don’t think I will ever get faster at reading the map, well not much, but I should be able to get better at focusing. I am going to try and think of ways of doing this - I did notice an ad generated by this site coming up next to my log advertising a memory and focus tonic - perhaps I need to try it!
