run 25:00 [3]

Quick outing for Callum. Up Suffolk to upper sturt rd, back down boundary track.

orienteering 35:27 [3] 2.9 mi (12:13 / mi)

Simon 's sprint course at Flinders Uni. Good fun. Tried to simplify as much as possible. At times I felt flowing but then other times would hesitate. Not always sure what is allowed on sprint maps so was quite conservative on a couple of legs which I probably didn't need to be..

run 1:07:00 [3]

Belair run with the crew on a lovely evening. Despite some constricted breathing as I have a bit of asthma at the moment, legs felt good. Up valley, up Saddle hill and down QJD . Lovely sunset..

Strength and core 20:00 [3]

At gym

horse riding 20:00 [3]

Arena work today, using core a lot. This mild weather we are having at the moment is divine.

run 1:20:00 [3]

Callum and I ran from school to Hawthorndene oval to meet Vanessa ( newly taken up running) and Polly ( Labrador who needed regular bits of food to keep steady run up!) and convinced them they could run to Park with me to look again for my compass I dropped yesterday. Along minnow creek up road to QJD most of way up then turned back to go down over narrow over knoll track that joins the track to railway then steps. Back past Railway dam to home. Perhaps 8-9 km so very slow, but Vanessa's longest ever run!

Strength and core 15:00 [3]

Weights at gym.and stretches. Shoulders tired now.

orienteering (Terrain practice) 3:00:00 [2] 13.75 km (13:05 / km)

The remnant Sunday morning group of 2, myself and AK, met for a Belair run, terrain practice, following some old o courses and looking for control sites for an upcoming event I am setting. Plenty of up and down. Time flew, but this included map discussion and trying to ID rocks in what I call the Bermuda triangle section. Found some rocks easily, confused by others ( won't use those). Hoping I can double check some things with the Thursday night group. Feeling much more confident about setting courses now. Cool at start but quite warm by end. Felt really good but sleepy now after lunch.

run 39:00 [3]

Down Rankeys, up Suffolk track to upper Sturt rd, east to Kaloola track down into valley and back along valley.

run 1:13:00 [3]

To Crafers West and return past fire site.

orienteering 25:00 [3]

Guessing time a bit. Started walking around short course with Leith and 2 friends. Went on ahead to check H, who being older wanted to go on her own and left ahead of us. Couldn't find her ( turned out at this point on way to 3 she was lost and off route) ran all way round to finish - no H so went round again trying take easy mistake to make routes. Didn't see her, nor boys either until I found them all safe and well sitting in a tree at the finish. Huge sigh of relief!

run 1:03:00 [3]

From home to meet the crew. Nice run up the valley past the cottages to check out blackberry situation and back along boundary track. Park so pleasant after the rain and it was nice and cool. Feels very autumny all of a sudden, such a rapid change.

Great day for Callum as earlier we had been for a nice ride around the paddocks of Alfie's home at Cherry Gardens.

cycle (Commute) 1:05:00 [3]

Hard to believe last week I wet my clothes before riding to work downhill to keep my core temperature down, this morning I wore a rain coat ! Very heavy downpour about 20 mins prior to leaving, roads quite wet,

run 55:00 [3]

Ran to meet a friend in Belair, then we ran for about 30 minutes, then had coffee at the Sheoak cafe, then I ran home. This morning was almost cool! So nice and the bush is still smelling fresh from the rain.

Sunday Feb 16, 2014 #

run (Long) 1:30:00 [3] 13.5 km (6:40 / km)

Guessing time as we stopped a bit and looped back etc very pleasant Sunday morning bridgy run with F and T ( who took a more direct option) and Olivia, Andrew and John over to Worabinda via Aldgate and the Stirling linear trial. Then back via Old Mt Barker Rd and towards Arbury park to return via the creek passed the turning Mill wheel and back to oval. Unfortunately we missed F and T here after spying them mid route.

Thinking about it I could be saying F and T and Junior went for a run!

Friday Feb 14, 2014 #

run 36:00 [3] 4.5 km (8:00 / km)

From school up Suffolk to upper sturt rd, down Kaloola track back along valley. Bush was still and damp in light but steady rain, probably breathing a sign of relief. Beautiful!

Gym machines 25:00 [3]

Strength and core 20:00 [3]

orienteering 33:54 [3] 3.7 km (9:10 / km)

Silly error from 3 to 4 cost 3 mins. Not paying attention to scale and direction out of control. 3 mins down on Robin. Fun course and nice damp evening.

Thursday Feb 13, 2014 #

run 52:00 [3] 7.7 km (6:45 / km)

From Turners ave after foraging for Boof, loop around Frank Smith up Olave hill, then over upper sturt rd, left along boundary fence back home. Really nice to have some rain while running, it's been so long. Rehearsing for interview later today as I went . Time suggests no speed even by my standards but was fairly steady, a few brief stops.

cycle 1:05:00 [3]

Hot ride in this morning. Soaked t shirt and bike shorts under tap before changing into them after work so went out nice and soggy to find it wasn't so hot after all - maybe mid 30s with cloud cover. Quite happy about that!

run 55:30 [3] 9.29 km (5:58 / km)

Ran up park boundary past cottages and over to Cherry plantation rd, back down valley along rd to save time. Quite a nice loop. Cooler but windy. It's so often windy lately! Very sweaty and Callum seemed a bit tired on downhills. Or maybe he has one pace where as I have pretty slow on up, and bit faster on down.

Finding my ph running app a mixed blessing. It's good for finding out distances , but I do spend a lot of time faffing about pausing and un pausing rather labouriously and accidentally touching the camera and taking lots of photos of the ground and my shoes.

Sunday Feb 9, 2014 #

run 1:11:00 [3] 11.2 km (6:20 / km)

Too tired to join early arrows run at Bridgewater, much as company would've been nice. Lovely to head out after 9 am and still be cool. Went up turners, olave, right at upper sturt rd, along boundary , past cottages up track to cherry plantation rd. stayed on bitumen instead of redwoods and surveyed damage from fire across valley. Thankfully not too big ( actually seemed smaller and less intense than last summers cfs burn off adjacent )! So glad they were on to it quickly ( thanks to Simon) and the wind settled.
Felt pretty good today for first time in ages - called cool weather I think- Callum said not too fast on easy bits down valley so we cruised rather than pushed it.

swim 40:00 [1]

Well after hearing the fire siren ( not all that long after getting out of bed as slept in), plus helicopters, texts / ph call from 2 friends and cfs , checking website and capped by cfs pre- recorded ph call ' if you have not yet evacuated it is now too late' ......' Fire burning in Belair NP, is out of control, spreading in all directions'.....we promptly grabbed a very few things, moved Boof and Bill inside and headed off about 9.40, spread across 4 cars, me with Leith and Callum. Many people just going about Sat am business as we drove through Hawthorndene. No traffic which was my main concern in getting down the hill, but of course I worried about people staying behind. By 10 am we were at Brighton. Had breakfast and later I went for a swim, very low intensity. No goggles so I didn't do much freestyle.
Our family headed back in dribs and drabs. Bryn first at 1.30 - reporting no cfs and no smoke. Me last around 4 pm. Very tiring day. Oh and Callum learnt to go in the water ! He's a brave sea dog now.

orienteering 40:04 [3] 3.0 km (13:21 / km)

This was really fun, I'd forgotten how much fun o was. This was around adelaide uni, I hadn't orienteered here before. Missed an obvious shorter route from 2-3 and fumbled 5-6 but mostly happy with route choices. Confused with 8 for a bit, looking to close to corner of building. Others also found it hard. As I'm not a fast map reader I tried to simplify as much as possible to keep flow. Saw Jenny heading towards 13 ( I think from memory) as I was heading away from it and I wondered how long before I saw her again. She overtook me just after 16. I kept her in view for a bit but fumbled locating 19 ( small set of stairs hard to see on map with sweaty eyes and she got a green light to cross the road while I got the red one) . It was fun to try a bit harder.

42C and ' catastrophic ' fire conditions tomorrow. A no exercise day for me..

horse riding 15:00 [3]

Nice ride on Alfie in arena, , logging when I was using my core a lot during repeat transitions -walk ,trot. Pretty warm, squirted us both down before start.

Strength and core 15:00 [3]

Popped into gym before shopping.

run 1:10:00 [3]

I'm guessing time a bit as I didn't properly time. Something strange happened tonight, I was the first to arrive! Wes tarted together up the valley but before Karla the others had turned back and just Lauren, Callum and I kept going . It was pretty warm and I was feeling slow but it was very pleasant to catch up with L.we went up to the Redwoods, up the bessa blocks and up to saddle hill rd, then right to tap, left down QJD with a diversion to run down the track which goes passed the tank, and back onto QJD. Back via playground. I walked the last bit home from the golf club.

Gym machines 30:00 [3]

Strongly advised not to cycle to work today ( by my friend/ neighbour in next street who was trapped home by en enormous eucalyptus tree snapping in half on her driveway, bringing down power lines , leith was going there for day as it was a student free day and had to climb over neighbours back fences to get there as road was taped off ) and I thought she had a point. I even felt nervous driving in the wind with snapped branches, many quite sizeable, lining the roads. Strange morning!

So went to gym after work to go on rowing machine and cross trainer. It was pretty packed.

run 44:00 [3] 7.0 km (6:17 / km)

Home, turners, archibald reserve, forest, apex park up to blackwood. Had coffee, quick visit gym, then home up walkways. Much cooler today but still ended up very sweaty. Very windy , lots of branches coming down, made me a bit jumpy!

Strength and core 15:00 [3]

At gym.

run 1:15:00 [3]

Even with the early (7 ish) start it was still around 30 C when we set out, but at least it was overcast at Bridgewater . We ran via heysen trail to Mylor for a water spot at the school where it was surprisingly less warm and the ground was slightly damp. Then back via Wilson rd and down and up through Engelbrecht reserve with ak and jc while others took different routes. By the time we were back the sun was out and I was sweating buckets !

Long pool session at home after helped .

Had planned to ride to Picadilly through Park for 4 pm rogaine meeting ( with ice packs in pockets etc) but after feeling sick walking Leith down the road to a friends I decided to leave it for another day, not in the mid 40s. Used extra time for a nap .

Saturday Feb 1, 2014 #

run 48:00 [3] 7.5 km (6:24 / km) +149m 5:49 / km

From home, up valley ( stop at railway dam for Callum to drink) on up valley, passed my old next door neighbour from Pole rd, running opposite direction ( presumably she'd just run up Pole rd!), passed Karka ( another drink stop for Callum) noticed some cyclists who had passed me had turned around and were coming back down valley . The guy stopped to say 'there are '4 big emus just passed that big log' I said something inane like oh really how nice and kept running. Then I wondered if they thought they should warn me, and that was why they turned around. The 4 big emus were indeed there, and quite engrossed in picking blackberries, which seemed sensible to me. I ran up road ( felt temperature rising) then back along boundary track to home. Last bit was hot! I'd accidentally paused my ph app from volunteer centre ( or dam) all way to Karka . My app measured 6.68 for total run, which I think is a bit short , and might reflect the accidental pausing, so I've added a bit more distance. Headed straight for pool to cool down after.
