run 45:00 [3]

Ran the turners ave, Olave hill, park boundary track loop. Walked first bit as I was chatting on the phone. Very sweaty, humid weather. Back to late summer these past few days after having a taste of autumn.

Had a physio appointment later for some help with core muscles. Very informative and useful, and good to get supervised practice of using deeper, smaller core muscles.

horse riding 15:00 [3]

Logging harder bits, although we weren't well in sync today, not sure why. Trying to fit in some extra riding before increasing work hours shortly.

run 25:00 [3]

Bits of running I did putting out and picking up controls.

orienteering (Practice) 1:27:00 [3] 7.1 km (12:15 / km) +235m 10:31 / km

Ran around my course 1, interested to see if I could get better flow when I knew all the control locations. Probably should've just done course 2, but at point of decision between 2 courses was feeling good and time was not too bad, but became tired around half way mark, and it was pretty warm. Still a bit slow in and out of controls, and taking rough bearings. Fun to do some terrain running.

Put out controls before and picked up controls after then walked to and fro a friends 50th birthday again in park so feeling tired and well sunned. Apart from going home and showering spent more than 12 hours in park today. Pretty nice.

cycle (Commute) 1:05:00 [3]

Felt very sleepy today, even riding home.

Came home to find grocery shopping done and put away by my lovely helpful daughter.

Log is looking very boring and orange.

cycle 35:00 [3]

To pick up my mended car from Oaklands Park. Cold enough to ride in a jumper!

run 40:00 [3]

Was longer than this but was stop start so logging the start bits. With friend Vanessa and Callum and Polly. Couple of intervals around Frank Smith oval too.

cycle 1:45:00 [3]

Through Belair to Picadilly for rogaine meeting and return in the dusk. Checked out last control site on way up QJD. Courses all locked in now so hopefully will be interesting enough. Very pleasant ride.

Nice horse ride this morning. Haven't managed to fit in yoga this weekend.

run (Trail and terrain) 1:30:00 [3]

Running time a bit of a guess as was out for 3 1/2 hrs total taping last and the more remote control sites for next Sunday. Some regular track running and some terrain, the latter rather slow . Lovely day in the bush . Saw lots of Roos, various birds and an echidna.

Noted:
1. Rocks make much more sense when you're not in a hurry.
2. Low back very slightly tender, must do some yoga.

Friday Mar 21, 2014 #

run 32:00 [3]

Short park loop. Tried to push it a bit.

Thursday Mar 20, 2014 #

run 50:00 [3] 9.5 km (5:16 / km)

Up to the Redwoods and back with the crew. Nice evening. Hamstrings felt a bit tired by end, so walked the last bit home across the golf course.
Time and distance a bit of a guess .

run (Slow jog!) 1:00:00 [3]

Stop start slow run, tagged 4 more control sites.

An interesting thing happened while doing this. I took a careful bearing from one rock to the next, which is a lone rock on a slope with no other significant features nearby. I kept an eye on my compass, walked, and hit it straight on. What a pleasant surprise !

Went to GP as asthma persisting for over 4 weeks and are now on panafcortelone for 5 days. Noticing a difference already.

Note

Went to run to tape more controls but legs said walk. Much slower when walking, how do non runners do it? Everything takes longer when you walk!

orienteering 25:22 [3] 2.1 km (12:05 / km)

SA Sprint champs. This was fun, but as my time shows I was a bit ditsy with my lack of sleep. My brain was more a problem than my tired legs. Between controls 2 and 3 I made a wild assumption about which direction I should exit 2, not at all based on a compass. Realised I was at the wrong control , tried to read the map, ran to a second wrong control before finally remembering to line my map to north. I need a little ditty or mantra to help me be sensible when i am orienteering when tired. After this i was ok, hesitating but at least not so off course. Lots of fun but would've been better off fresh.

In the afternoon nearly evening I walked about Belair taping controls. Bush was lovely and still. Legs sore no running done.

rogaine 3:59:50 [3] 35.0 km (6:51 / km)

SARA 4 hour twilight rogaine at Morialta and surrounds 5 to 9 pm . I felt very tired when I woke up Saturday morning and noted I felt a bit feverish still. I did not feel ready for a rogaine, even a 4 hour. However I thought I could just see how I went and dutifully turned up for map handout - after unloading 85 kg of fruit for after. I left Jenny to decide the how to of planning for Morialta, as she knows it so much better than I . We made sure we looked at options, not discarding until we had measured and checked against what was a do- able distance. We were keen not to miss the relatively easy points on the plains, and wanted close to two hours for the flats, but still getting as many high points as we could in Morialta.

I love rogaining ( well in Australia, I'm not sure I've quite got over the mossies and marshes of Russia,) once our course was planned and we were off it was very pleasant. For the first time in 2 days I stopped feeling sick! Proof rogaining is good for health, well for my health that day. Lots of friendly people around to chat to, nice scenery and perfect weather. We eased into it gently starting up a steep hill and gradually gained momentum. I soon realised however that the reading glasses I've been starting to use at home need to come on rogaining with me, I had more trouble focussing on the map, which I certainly didn't have 2-3 years ago :( It was cloudy after a while and then started to rain, we were both without coats but as we were mostly running we were warm enough. At norton summit we smelled wood smoke ( which would've been alarming a few weeks ago but which now conjured visions of coming in from the rain and sitting by a cosy fire eg at the Scenic hotel! ). as we descended back down we noted we were right on schedule to the minute. We made some decisions about our flats route and off we went. Dark was closing in rapidly and I was having increasing difficulty reading the map on the run. Jenny was ding a wonderful job quickly working out routes, memorising these and calling out 2 nd left then right etc. I punched the controls while she quickly worked out next leg. With 12 legs to go Jenny said we needed 7 minutes per leg. We had just enough time. Amazingly we managed this pretty well, coming back with 10 secs to spare - a little bit close at the end there! I was pleased I felt pretty good throughout feeling comfortable with a steady running pace, although was glad I wasn't doing all the maths on the hop. I was pleased with our 3 rd place, being beaten by two fit looking teams of guys with long legs and experience and ability at trail running. sARA is getting great turnouts lately and this was no exception with 120 teams starting out. Several teams ended up in Morialta at night and not surprisingly found this slow going I was pleased we planned as we did. Turned into a late night with AGM, results, cleaning up and shower , unpacking at home. Fun event . Thanks J.

At gym. Bit pathetic today, not feeling 100%

run 15:00 [3]

To check a control site . Not feeling great and found myself walking home.

run 50:00 [3]

Over to park to meet everyone and then we ran up through the tunnel to the rocks between the waterfalls. It was lovely in the bush and I was happy to get some terrain practice and not travel too far to rest legs for the four hour rogaine on Saturday. Thanks to Jenny and Simon for the rock tour, my courses look more interesting now! Sorry we disappeared on you Bridget.

cycle 1:00:00 [3]

Set a new record for me on the way home as rushing for after school care 36 mins from FMC to school. So hard to get all finished at work in just 2 days a week there!

Kayak 55:00 [3]

Again time a guess. Water was like glass, best conditions I'd ever experienced. Slow meander to Brighton. Had take away coffee on the kayaks. Then I had 40 minutes or so on my own so headed back a little way towards Hallet cove. Easy going in the smooth water so tried to put effort in.

swim 15:00 [3]

In sea out to pole after kayak. Sea was lovely but it's been so long since I've swum laps I'm not good at keeping a rhythm.

run 30:00 [3]

How to cap off a nice day. Abandoned cooking tea for a while to join Monday night run. Ran to frank smith and back through pine forest mostly with Jenny. I was actually pretty tired by now . Busy weekend and too many late nights. Life has become very busy at the moment.

Sunday Mar 9, 2014 #

run 1:15:00 [3]

Time a bit of a guess. Wasn't up early enough for Simon's training after hosting herds of teenage girls so Callum and I ran partway up QJD then went pottering about looking at possible control sites for Belair event. Meandered up towards the o training but then turned around as it was time to head to the cafe. After coffee ran home. Running time a guess. Pretty hot.

Kayak 1:05:00 [2]

Met friend Anne at Marino for a kayak - borrowed her friends kayak. Time a guess, out for 3 hrs but lots of stops. Jaw as sore as my arms! Managed to get to beginning of Hallet cove CP before we turned back. Used a tow rope part way when A tired so then could pull harder. Better for keeping us together but hard to chat.

Lovely afternoon and evening at beach.

run (Long) 1:17:00 [3]

Home up valley to Crafers West and return.

orienteering 22:42 [3] 2.7 km (8:24 / km)

Last of sprint series in Belair on a lovely evening. It was so lovely to stroll over to start from home, and walk home again with Fern. I made 2 sub optimal route choices and one sloppy exit direction, not disasters, just less efficient, but mostly this went well. So much fun and motivating having people around all trying hard. Controls not hidden so if you were in right spot you saw them which made it faster and flowing. Really fun!

run (Cool down) 10:00 [3]

Warm down ( or cool down?) loop with Jenny.

Thursday Mar 6, 2014 #

9 AM

run (Long) 1:17:00 [3]

From school Turners, olave, park boundary track past cottages up and over to redwoods and back down valley. A bit ploddy , not very focussed or much energy for running, mind wandering. A beautiful crisp autumn morning.

cycle (Commute) 1:00:00 [3]

38 minutes from FMC to Hawthorndene osch today, a new record for me I think , not that enjoyable, but result of cutting it very fine for pick up!

run 1:05:00 [3]

Time a guess as a bit stop start. What is becoming a traditional Monday morning run with my friend Vanessa. Today we did a loop around forest and frank smith park . I did an extra loop up Suffolk track and back down park boundary fence. We rescued a school girl stuck up a monkey bar who had climbed up there while walking with her class to escape the (she thought) scary dogs running on the oval. ( noisy callum being one of the scary hounds ). There were about 5 a6 dogs running about. We did 2 sprints across the oval as interval practice.

Pretty warm today jumped in the pool when home.

horse riding 15:00 [3]

Flat work. Logging harder bits using core. Nice.

run 15:00 [3]

Short run with Callum before o training. It's wasn't worth taking him, last year he went crazy with excitement seeing so many runners.

orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)

Ohoc training day organised by Bridget. Time and distance approximate. First started to shadow Leith and his friend, until they were safely on their way. Then did a moderate course, aiming for control flow, also was good terrain practice. Not sure about route choices as I ended up crawling in a couple of prickly spots. For first time I hit a pit near the track north of the lake fairly cleanly, I've had trouble with that before. That was travelling cross country. Manage to stuff up same control on next exercise, route choice. I went fairly straight until near the end where I thought I get it from the track. Wasn't clear to me where I'd come out on track and I managed to overshoot it and run off the map. Amazed how much I was out on distance. Felt really tired on this course, and hot. No good reason for leg tiredness. Went home and had not much success with ocad. Couldn't even open files!

Also did lots of gardening today so quite tired by end. Feeling slightly off colour at the moment.
