rogaine 3:59:50 [3] 35.0 km (6:51 / km)
SARA 4 hour twilight rogaine at Morialta and surrounds 5 to 9 pm . I felt very tired when I woke up Saturday morning and noted I felt a bit feverish still. I did not feel ready for a rogaine, even a 4 hour. However I thought I could just see how I went and dutifully turned up for map handout - after unloading 85 kg of fruit for after. I left Jenny to decide the how to of planning for Morialta, as she knows it so much better than I . We made sure we looked at options, not discarding until we had measured and checked against what was a do- able distance. We were keen not to miss the relatively easy points on the plains, and wanted close to two hours for the flats, but still getting as many high points as we could in Morialta.
I love rogaining ( well in Australia, I'm not sure I've quite got over the mossies and marshes of Russia,) once our course was planned and we were off it was very pleasant. For the first time in 2 days I stopped feeling sick! Proof rogaining is good for health, well for my health that day. Lots of friendly people around to chat to, nice scenery and perfect weather. We eased into it gently starting up a steep hill and gradually gained momentum. I soon realised however that the reading glasses I've been starting to use at home need to come on rogaining with me, I had more trouble focussing on the map, which I certainly didn't have 2-3 years ago :( It was cloudy after a while and then started to rain, we were both without coats but as we were mostly running we were warm enough. At norton summit we smelled wood smoke ( which would've been alarming a few weeks ago but which now conjured visions of coming in from the rain and sitting by a cosy fire eg at the Scenic hotel! ). as we descended back down we noted we were right on schedule to the minute. We made some decisions about our flats route and off we went. Dark was closing in rapidly and I was having increasing difficulty reading the map on the run. Jenny was ding a wonderful job quickly working out routes, memorising these and calling out 2 nd left then right etc. I punched the controls while she quickly worked out next leg. With 12 legs to go Jenny said we needed 7 minutes per leg. We had just enough time. Amazingly we managed this pretty well, coming back with 10 secs to spare - a little bit close at the end there! I was pleased I felt pretty good throughout feeling comfortable with a steady running pace, although was glad I wasn't doing all the maths on the hop. I was pleased with our 3 rd place, being beaten by two fit looking teams of guys with long legs and experience and ability at trail running. sARA is getting great turnouts lately and this was no exception with 120 teams starting out. Several teams ended up in Morialta at night and not surprisingly found this slow going I was pleased we planned as we did. Turned into a late night with AGM, results, cleaning up and shower , unpacking at home. Fun event . Thanks J.
