Loop up past Pines oval with Bryn and Leith, Callum and Bear. This was quite fun.

Feel like I'm coming down with something, I hope I am wrong. :(

run 1:00:35 [3] 9.7 km (6:15 / km)

With Callum, Run up to Redwoods, single track, past dam to QJD, down. I felt quite sore today - maybe from cycling hard last night to get to Pilates - quite plodding as a result. Really lovely morning. Creeks are running well.

cycle (Commute ) 1:00:00 [3] 16.0 km (3:45 / km)

To work from Blackwood and return.

Pilates 50:00 [1]

run 31:30 [3] 5.34 km (5:54 / km)

Evening run in Belair with both dogs. As my course was so short yesterday my legs were not tired today. I'm almost envious of those who did the 11 km course. However I would've wanted a pre Race agreement from my brain it wouldn't make any mistakes on course or those 11 km would take forever!
I adopt a unique running style running at night with crazy Bear dog who likes to jump and be right in close to me - knees and hips a bit flexed to lower my centre of gravity, try not to lift feet high, stick in each hand to define my personal space to reduce tripping risk. Not particularly efficient or flowing!

run (Warm up ) 14:49 [3] 2.5 km (5:56 / km)

Before my course.

orienteering (Course 4 Worlds End OY) 54:49 [3] 5.5 km (9:58 / km)

4.1 km felt a bit short for a long and I thought about doing the W35 5.8 km but decided to stay with my usual group and do a longer warm up.

I enjoyed this - the steep contours helped map interpretation and unlike yesterday I didn't make any major mistakes. A bit too high up the gully for 7 and route choice to 3 was probably suboptimal. Saw others out on same course at various times which made it more fun.

Despite some nerves beforehand L had a good run so I was very pleased for him.

orienteering (Control collecting ) 1:25:00 [1] 6.0 km (14:10 / km)

Collected some of the further out controls. Arms quite tired by end.

Saw 3 separate herds of goats.

orienteering (Star relay) 15:00 [3] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)

Star relay at worlds end. Lots of fun.

orienteering (Course 1 Worlds End north) 1:18:00 [3] 7.9 km (9:52 / km)

This was mostly enjoyable although rocky and steep in parts. Made a big 10 plus minute mistake using the wrong spot on the track as an attackpoint. I need to read the map. That's all.

Friday Jul 21, 2017 #

orienteering (Training ) 2:05:00 [1] 10.0 km (12:30 / km)

Various training activities mostly shadowing juniors. Collected some controls and baffled myself by turning right instead of left on a ridge top which led to various wrong assumptions until I was pulled up by the fallen down fence.
Apart from the seemingly obligatory ( for me) getting lost on Twigham experience, being on camp is fun.

run 10:00 [3] 1.73 km (5:47 / km)

Tiny run with dogs before driving to Burra - Callum badly wanted to come.

Note

On Junior camp. Helped with fun training exercises at Merridee. Then more interesting info in evening. Kids seem to be enjoying it.

Pilates 1:00:00 [2]

Love this. So helpful.

run 27:30 [3] 5.0 km (5:30 / km)

Short loop in flatter part of Belair with both dogs. It was really wet. I emptied the rain gauge before I left and when I returned less than 1/2 hour later there was 9.5 mm there!

Paths had turned to rivers and the golf course was a swamp, with a number of herons poking happily about.

run 1:07:44 [3] 10.47 km (6:28 / km)

On holidays this week so headed out this morning for a run with both dogs in increasing wind and rain. Went east along boundary track and had reached the higher flatter section when I noticed a white headed emu just ahead on the track. When it saw me it started heading our way, quickly gathering speed. It looked angry. I let go of Callum and he took off in fear, back the way we came. I quickly got off the track and stumbled into the bush with Bear hiding behind a tree. Angry emu ignored us and tore after poor Callum. I headed down the bushy spur for a bit and then turned contoured around to try and find Callum, calling. My stomach sank as I saw angry white headed emu just ahead looking about in the direction I wanted to go. I quickly back tracked and hid behind a tree again. I then headed down the bushy spur as quickly as I could with Bear attached and in slippery conditions.
Luckily angry emu didn't show again although some Roos tore past. When I got to the road I was about to ring home to see if Callum had turned up when he bolted out of the bush to join us. He looked a bit frazzled but was happy enough to keep running. Up Saddle hill back down QJD. I carried a stick the rest of the way just in case angry white head reappeared. Bit too much wildlife for me!

FU short training.

run 28:43 [3] 5.0 km (5:45 / km)

Morning run from beach house to whale watching spot at Bashams beach where all I saw a distant black line in the water. Beautiful morning. I think I almost prefer the south coast in the winter.

Using an Abc fm app. Was pretty good. Some greT hip, back, leg and shoulder stretches. With V.

Friday Jul 14, 2017 #

run 43:00 [3] 7.12 km (6:02 / km)

Run on the beach at Middleton where we are spending a couple of nights with friends. Walked most of the last km . Legs don't feel very strong at the moment . Lovely morning on the beach. Wind turned more southerly and became much colder later when we went whale watching.

Thursday Jul 13, 2017 #

Sunday Jul 9, 2017 #

run 46:00 [3] 7.6 km (6:03 / km)

5 pm run so last bit in dark: Up past railway dam ( water is going over the spill way for first time this winter) up valley, left at karka, up hill, back via Melville house track and Gully rd. Walked last bit across golf course.

Temporarily misplaced my garmin charger - phone is flat so I'm guessing distances, doesn't feel right not measuring!

Missed o as stayed on at Hindmarsh island family reunion.

Saturday Jul 8, 2017 #

run 35:00 [3] 6.5 km (5:23 / km)

rogaine (Fun in the Flinders ) 11:59:30 [3] 44.0 km (16:21 / km)

SARA 12 hour with Jenny. See also Jenny's report. A beautiful location in the ranges near Murray Town. Beautiful location - nicer than I remembered it from a spring 12 hour in 2009 teamed with Fern and John N. perhaps because then there was lots of up to waist high prickly dry grass.

We definitely struggled to decide where to go this Rogaine. We spent a lot of the event lamenting our choice to go South first and avoid much of the steep NW, particularly when we reached the part of the steep section we did have time for, and saw how spectacular it was and also how open and easy traveling it was, although steep. The creek feeding the waterfall was spectacular and wading through it brought instant and prolonged relief to my painful soles of my feet. I'd taken 4 panadol and 4 neurophen in the first 6 hours and needed no more after my wade.

Nav went pretty smoothly with J interpreting the map really well and me mostly following ok ( with a bit of time.) Night went pretty smoothly - enough contour detail , at times just. My night vision is getting worse and unfortunately my new torch was disappointing- I think I need to upgrade- it's no fun feeling blind at night. Also need to up the magnification on my 'Rogaine ' glasses.

Timed the end well, just fitting an extra 20 in. As we were sure our route was suboptimal we were very surprised to win. Must've been pretty efficient after all but not quite as speccy scenery.
