run (Stuart Gorge Trail Run) 2:03:00 [3] 19.7 km (6:15 / km)
Inspired by Tyson I decided to enter this. As did 180 people in total! Hadn't done this distance for a while and while I knew I could make it I wasn't sure how long it would take me. I actually slept better than I usually do before a running event which was a relief ( although I had weird dreams!) This was aided by being tired from a busy day and O at O Halloran hill.
Perfect running conditions - a cool sunny morning.Started well back which was fine until the first bit of single track where people were going cautiously. So started the process of waiting until it was possible to pass ( initially following Tyson then on my own.) Early on I was passed by an old school mate, Mandy Towler, who is a good marathon runner , and we leaped frogged until about 14 km when she was in front and I didn't see her again. I was faster downhill she uphill. She ended up 3 minutes faster and I thought she'd take our age category , but it turns out she is in the one below, just. So I was pleased to find out out when I checked at home that I had won my age group and was also pleasantly surprised to be 5th female overall, Mandy 4th. Lauren was second less than a minute behind the winner. Poor Lauren had a bad stomach which she lost upon finishing, she told me after.
Mostly I enjoyed the run. Tried hard without going flat out. Early on I worked hard to pass a woman who did not want to be passed, it seemed, whose perfume/ deodorant smell set of my asthma ( stupidly I left my ventolin at the start). After feeling a bit frustrated along the creeks being stuck behind people ( I guess I am fortunate I enjoy wet feet) I got into more of a rhythm with the group around me, moving to the side to let people pass on the uphill, them moving on the downhills. I had joined Strava to see how I went on the downhill Strava segment included on the course. A fun concept. I wasn't quite sure where it started so just guessed. Had lots of fun enjoying this downhill section which seemed over too soon! Now have a place on the Strava leaderboard for this segment ( 2nd W today, 3rd overall.) I strongly suspect a downhill trail is the only way I will do well on a segment! I would be lousy on an uphill. After this there was 4-5 km to go uphill and contouring which I just plodded along for.
Later I really enjoyed a Mother's Day bowl of soup at the organic market. Now I am on the sofa and my legs are complaining!
It was nice to see so many runners out for the 3 distances, around 500, and lots of familiar rogaining and o faces.
