(injured) (rest day)

Tibialis anterior is very painful today and would have kept me from riding if it weren't a rest day. I can actually feel the muscle catching and releasing when I move my foot - like it's squeaky or sticky. Christine can even feel it when touching the muscle. This is officially an injury now. I'm suspecting that my right cleat is to blame. It's been sticky the past couple of weeks and is keeping my foot from floating to a neutral position. I didn't think it was that big of a deal, but I'm beginning to think differently. Icing, elevation, anti-inflamatories started. We'll see how it goes and if it gets in the way of this week's training.

Route: I think this is my favorite route from home yet. Great roads except chip sealed last 5 miles to anacortes. Lots of hills. No whales on the way home, but it is completely possible to see them ... fremont - blue ridge - shoreline - edmonds - backroads to harbor pointe - mukilteo - ferry to clinton - whidbey backroads to anacortes - ferry to Friday Harbor - Victoria Clipper to downtown - fremont direct (not included in distance). Riders were Christine, Wendy, and Ann.
Physical: Felt absolutely great except for my new problem with the tibialis anterior - the muscle that raises the foot up. Right side. Clearly have a repeating problem that started hurting on the ride at about 70 miles. The legs, however, felt very fresh after the ride. The pace was slow, so even with the pushes up every hill, I wasn't working that hard. I pushed the pace solo for the last 6 miles and had tons of juice left. That felt good.
Mental: Loved this route, the ride, and the company. Didn't like the pace or lack of ability to get a line going. Would love to do this ride with 4 or 5 really strong riders and just rip it.

Decided to go for a run and test out how the achilles is doing after talking at length with my physical therapist and working up to this. The run felt great, and I was very surprised by the pace I was able to maintain while still at a very low RPE. Blew away previous PR from April by 3 minutes for this short route on the burke. The achilles is not ready for running on a regular basis, unfortunately. We'll see how it feels tomorrow, but the irritation tonight already makes it obvious the healing is not complete.

Physical: Legs felt a little empty tonight. I think I've been going a little harder than I should. Particularly the first half of last night's ride. Also, the little muscle by the shin that pulls the foot up has been sore the past 2 days. Not sure why. Annoying but not yet an "injury".
Mental: Also felt a little flat tonight mentally. Had an ok ride, but returning in the dark with one set of good lights for both of us is not a great idea. Second set of lights arrives tomorrow.
