classic ski (Birkie trails) 50:00 [3] 8.5 km (5:53 / km)

We decided to try to take a northerly route back home to take advantage of snow and get a ski in to break up the long drive. It was still a long drive. But we did go to Hayward Wisconsin to the revered American Birkbeiner site. It's tiny town but they are all about nordic skiing and the Birkie is huge for them. There's a really nice little museum/gift shop and super nice ski-types working there. We were directed to the "OO" access pont which is about 1/2 way along the 56km course. It's all rolling wooded ravines with big deciduous trees in that part of the world and it was all covered with a gorgeous silver coating of hoar frost. So pretty.
We skied from the warming hut there on the freshly groomed trail :). So sweet. And it's massive! So wide. Widest I've ever been on.Twice the width of the Gatineau Parkway. Probably the width of a 4 lane highway. Seriously. When they have the race everyone goes at once; classic, skaters, all ages, and then there's another start at the 1/2 way point for the 1/2 Birkie.
We had a lovely rolling classic ski down and back for about 8-9km. and then did the same on our skate skis. So sorry we didn't have more time to just keep gliding along with basically the place to ourselves on a beautiful Thursday afternoon. It was hard to get back in the car for 8 more hours.
