skate ski warm up/down (Minneapolis) 50:00 [3] 6.0 km (8:20 / km)

Warm up on crust outside the stadium area. Kind of fun to cruise around the rolling parkland. Skis felt good and they were just the warm up skis. Cool down on the race course

skate ski race (Minneapolis) 50:00 [5] 15.0 km (3:20 / km)

We hit the wax right today! Thanks Goose. The skis felt so good. So fast I was surprised and double poled my self right onto my ass at the stat! My tailbone hurts now.
Mrs. Huet was flying. I managed to get back up with the fast half of our group - but I only have enough at that pace for about 5-6 km. Two strong ladies finally passed me on the second lap after sitting on my tail for quite a while. Mrs. Huet fought to stay in front of an American woman for 14+km and got passed near the finish but managed a bronze!! Very cool. I finished 6th. Humbled once again by the much older, and apparently faster age groups. The next age group up winner blew by me making up 5 min. in about 7km.
The medal ceremony tonight was very nice and inspiring. Watching the 90 year-old guy who (despite being alone in his category) won his race, jump up onto the podium was quite a sight.

classic ski race (minneapolis) 56:00 [5] 15.0 km (3:44 / km)

Tricky wax day for sure! For everyone. Conditions held and there is enough base but the combo of old snow, man-made snow, a melt then a re-freeze, ice mixed in, then +6 today for classic was a challenge. Some people resorted to skins if they had them. The rest of us had to use some combination of klister. I thought I did rather well with the wax - with some advice from Goose. Everyone iced up as soon as they stepped out of the tracks or the tracks were washed out on a turn. I did one face plant, but saw lots of other skiers do the same. Mrs. Huet did well on our wax job too. Our skis were good in lots of sections and absolute dogs in a few. Those who had the resources must have had covers for their grip zones judging by the glide the had regardless of whether they were in the tracks or not, but they were also kick ass skiers. It's humbling when some of the older group who started 5 minutes behind you start passing you at the 1/2 mark! Also inspiring :). There were lots of 70+, and 80+ skiers. It was a fun course and a good day overall. Looking forward to tomorrow. Now that we've finally cleaned all the klister off our skis, and hands, and bags, and the car, and coats... we can start on tomorrow's skate skis.

classic ski (Minneapolis) 1:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:00 / km)

Got to the World Masters site early to test our wax/skis. They have just enough snow an it's old with some ice mixed in with man-made snow, but it's been lovingly cared for an dis in good shape. It did require blister though - and we did plan ahead so our blister base was good as it froze overnight and the T-line3 worked quite for us on the course. It's a 7.5 km loop that we'll do twice so we will need another thin layer so it lasts. The glide will need to be more durable too. I love the course - it seems Masters-friendly but there are definitely hills. I ain't afraid of no stinking' hills :). Nice atmosphere too - so far anyway. Not too intimidating , lots of friendly folk.

skate ski (Minneapolis) 30:00 [3] 7.0 km (4:17 / km)

Tried out 2 different pairs of skate skis after we tested classic. The snow seemed starchy and slow after the glazed tracks, but both Mrr. Huet and I liked our older skis best. Time to do some more waxing.

Note

Rest/travel day. 9 hours on the quiet highways of the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin, and then 2 hours stuck in rush hour traffic in Minneapolis. Crazy confusing and bumper-to-bumper.

skate ski (Hiawatha) 45:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:00 / km)

After a long drive up to the Soo, on a brilliant blue day, Mrs. Huet and I went straight to the Hiawatha trails and caught the last bit of daylight. Skied a gorgeous rolly trail - felt like we were on a conveyor belt. Easy skating and perfect for shaking the legs out after 9 hours in the car. I love winter.

skate ski (coaching) 4:00:00 [3]

Pretty sweet conditions up in Hepworth. The Sawmill trails seemed unaffected by the rain. The snow seemed fast compared to the cold stuff this past month and there was no ice:). I love their trails. Skied the rolling stretches near the chalet to watch our racers then headed out the back to the big hills between races to do some climbs to get warm. There was an icy dampness that really got to the fingertips and toes if you stood still for long. The "Grunt" cured that and I warmed up. On the road to Minneapolis tomorrow.
