skate ski (Highlands) 1:30:00 [3] 18.0 km (5:00 / km)

Highlands sent out word that they'd be open - Goose and I got ourselves invited to stay at Bash's place last night: so we could get there early. Amazing conditions!! There's a thick hard base of ice with 25 cm of snow on top. Chanse groomed it yesterday and it sintered overnight to hard corduroy. It was actually a bit too hard to start so Goose and I crust-cruised all over the Sampson fields first then got onto the trails that were starting to soften to perfection. It was such sweet skiing on easy fast snow, in brilliant sunshine, under sparkling blue sky. Everyone there had a huge smile on their face. And everything was open and groomed. The entire red, including the Hawberry and Woolner Loops. Awesome.

classic ski (Highlands) 1:30:00 [3] 15.0 km (6:00 / km)

Switched to classic and skied almost the red. I skipped the Woolner Loop when I saw Angus coming up it but had crust-cruised a couple of fields. Feeling tired by the end and the snow was getting slower but wow, what a ski day! April 21st, in southern Ontario!?!

skate ski (park/field) 1:00:00 [3]

Gorgeous clear, bright morning - still some frost. The crust was fantastic on the soccer fields so they begged to be skied on. So fun in the sun:)

cycling (road) 45:00 [3] 16.0 km (2:49 / km)

It has to be a good day when you can ski AND bike the same day. Easy cruise up Duffy's, Castlederg, Mt. Hope and home - with a smile:)

skate ski (park/field) 1:00:00 [3]

Today's warmer temps softened the glaze and made for pretty good skate conditions this evening. There were a few slushy spots but they were starting to freeze up again. Skated back and forth on the soccer fields again. There were coyote pups needy yipping at dusk. Then a young deer loped onto the field and stopped dead centre. Stared at me as I skied by about 15 metres away, watched me go by again, two more times and then boded off - in the direction of the coyotes. A few minutes later there was a burst of activity in the brush on the hill by the field. 2 bunnies bounced off into the trees and then 4 deer. I guess they saw the coyotes but I didn't. It was a bit spooky but cool.

mixed run 45:00 [4]

Thought about trying to ski but it was just a thick layer of glare ice everywhere so I ran. Ran at a good tempo for 2km then did 10 x 30 secs. sprints up Glasgow Rd. hill with a walk down since downhills hurt the knee. Jogged home.

skate ski (park/field) 35:00 [3]

Another wintry April day. Light snow on and off all day on top of hard layer of ice on top of the ice pellets. It was too hard a sheet of ice this morning to ski but I thought it may have softened by this evening. There were places where the layer of light snow allowed an edge but lots of spots where the wind had blown off the snow it was glare ice and impossible to get an edge to skate. So I mostly double poled round and ground the park till it got dark. It had to be done and was still fun, just not as heavenly as last Sunday.

skate ski (park/field) 1:40:00 [3]

It was still ice pellets this morning, so... one more ski! It was so easy to skate.
It was like tiny slippery ball bearings on top of a hard glaze. An amazing set of conditions that will probably never happen again but it was so fun to just cruise over open areas. I did tree, fence, lamp, goal post slalom agility ,and 20 x 200m sprints on a minute up and down the soccer fields, and double poling and legs only, then some more gliding. The ski surface was delicious! The rain is supposed to be coming so maybe this is really the last ski of the season. Fun:)
