cycling (road /trail) 1:00:00 [2] 15.0 km (4:00 / km)

Mrs. Huet was in town so we met for an easy chatty ride. Did a loop on Bolton camp, as well as local roads and got caught up. It was getting hot already but it was still pleasant in the shade in Bolton Camp and it was quite breezy - the real wind came later!!

Goose and I got a short ride in this afternoon up Duffy's to Old Church, and then down Mt. Hope. Nice day but cool compared to our canoe trip! Had to wear long sleeves.

canoeing long (Temagami trip) 2:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (10:55 / km)

Goose and I did a beautiful canoe trip in Temagami Sept. 12-17. Started at Mine Landing and paddled 14 km up into the Northwest Arm Wed. in sunny but pretty windy conditions with a fair bit of boat traffic that made it quite choppy. It calmed by early evening and the sunset was gorgeous - which was pretty much the pattern for 5 evenings in a row. We had sparkling clear, calm mornings with unbelievably flat water - like a mirror every morning.

Day 2 we paddled up into Obabika Lake (20km) and then hiked the Old Growth Trails (5km) at the north end before camping in another pretty spot. It was another hot day with the wind picking up from the southwest again and several lovely swims:)

Day 3 - calm and glassy again. When the sun got up above the ridge we were in a swampy section of the Wikimika River and the sunlight hitting thousands of dew-bejewelled spider webs was surreal. Just awesome. They was a stand of dead trees and the webs were like ghostly silver flags hanging off dead branches and reeds. So cool. We paddled through Diamond Lake and had several portages finally finishing in Sharp Rock Inlet (23km). Hot day - SW wind picked up again around noon, lots of swims, another very pretty sunset.

Day 4 - short day, and hot again. Beautiful calm water this morning and we stopped to climb Devil Mt. Wow - it's steep. As in, pull yourself up grabbing anything you can. After the portage into Kokoko Lake we stopped for lunch at a sweet site and decided to stay. This thwarted the plans of at least 2 other groups who were both clearly disappointed to find the site occupied when they rounded the bend. They managed to find the only 2 sites left - one on each side of us - so we had guys who motored up the lake to party on Saturday night on one side and a class of high school students on the other It was not a quiet evening but it was gorgeous and the sunset was splendid.

Day 5 - we woke up to the first grey morning yet. Very , very still but super misty. We paddled to the bottom of Kokoko and portaged into Kokoko Bay where it was still very flat and quiet. By the time we got out into Lake Temagami itself the southwest wind had picked up and we were paddling into chop. We paddled past Bear Island again and made the big open crossing down into the area where the Girl goes to Camp Temagami. We stopped for a visit and tour of the camp (but the Girl was back home) and by then the sun had burned off the mist and it was another hot, sunny, windy day. We paddled on to the south end of the Southwest Arm (30km) to a beautiful site on point with its own little bay and protective island . It was paradise. More great swimming, red pines for shade and then a spectacular sunset over a wide expanse of open water and sky. Magic.

Day 6 - another clear morning, warm, calm as far as the short portage back into the main lake. We stopped to do the High Rock trail another short but steep trail but not as steep as Devil Mt. the view was breathtaking. You could see forever. Nice place for lunch. By the time we got back down the wind had really started whipping up the waves - but it was a tailwind for us. It still made it a bit rough in our 15-foot canvas cedar strip. It felt twitchy. I was glad when we made that open crossing and got into a bit of shelter. We stopped for a final swim and then we were at the Mine Landing and done.
Great weather, awesome partner, fantastic trip:)
