cycling (Fall 50 (60) Festival) 45:00 [3] 15.0 km (3:00 / km)

The day dawned bright but brisk at 0 for the annual "Fall 50". In an attempt to get back to the challenge of doing the whole distance without a car I rode up to the Pinet's while Goose drove the canoes to the Duffy's Lane parking lot and then joined me where we also met Kevin. With several layers, Buffs and bootie covers we rode up Duffy's to Albion and then through to Palgrave - slightly late to meet the rest of the group for the hike in Palgrave forest.
9 AM

hiking (Palgrave Forest) 1:45:00 [3] 8.0 km (13:08 / km)

The full group of Margo, Tammy, Bash and Bent, Mrs. and Mr. Huet, Kevin and Gunda, Goose and I set off through the Legacy Pines golf course onto the Palgrave trails. The sun was still shining and we were protected in the tress from the wind that was picking up. It was gorgeous and we had a very social 8km hike. 80-year-old Margo was the most amazing trundling up and down a lot of technical hills. We finished at the Pinet's where Rob had set up the garage with a table of goodies. We snarfed down rice krispie squares, licorice (Kevin didn't even use his hands) fruit, soup and coffee to take the chill off while we put our bike shoes on.
11 AM

cycling (road/rail trail/trail) 1:45:00 [3] 12.5 km (8:24 / km)

Only some of the group biked: Tammy, Mrs. Huet, Bash and Bent, Kevin, Goose and I. We biked into Palgrave village then onto the rail trail east to Tottenham with more or less a tail wind. So we got there pretty quick. Hermes, Bib and the Hankster were there waiting at the Cedar Kitchen where we had brunch/lunch. Unfortunately Goose and I were the only ones with a lock. We set the bikes right outside the window where we could see them - all fall over in the wind out onto the road. Goose's helmet went flying and got run and squashed by a car :(. So Tammy stubornly refused to come inside and sat out front on bike watch. We had a nice break, warmed up (except for Tammy) and then said good-bye to the Millers and headed back west on the rail trail
Tammy, Bash and Bent split off to head home for their canoe while Mrs. Huet, Kevin, Goose and I rode on and down through Albion back to the Duffy's Lane parking lot. Snowflakes were falling lightly and it was pretty windy. It was rather a raw day but were well-dressed and enjoying ourselves:)
2 PM

canoeing (Humber) 1:35:00 [3] 7.0 km (13:34 / km)

Bash and Bent pulled into the Duffy's Lane parking lot while we were unloading our canoes and putting bikes in - perfect timing. We portaged down to the river and started our final leg. The water was down a bit from yesterday so we had a few more obstacles to negotiate. There were definitely some tricky spots where boats got stuck and people got wet. We had to get out at the usual pull-over places but it was lovely. We saw lots of deer and watched a spectacular river crossing of several deer right in front of us. Very cool. We floated down through a few riffles which were fun and pulled out pretty much on time at the bridge by our house. Then the eating began :). Some great cheeses & pate from the Herzog-Gross couple, squash soup, Tammy's vegetable-rich lasagna, the Huet's super spinach salad, and two desserts - Margo's apple crisp and a decadent chocolate mousse birthday cake from Bash and Bent. We all sat in a stupor for a bit before finally packing stuff up, feeling like it was about 11 - at 6:00! So fun though:).
What luck I have to live so close to places to play outside with friends who like to do the same stuff! Another awesome Fall 50+. Some of us actually broke 60 to celebrate my 60th!

canoeing (Humber) 1:30:00 [3] 7.0 km (12:51 / km)

Grey day that was supposed to be rainy but it never happened. And there was no wind so it was actually ok. Goose and I did a scouting paddle in preparation for the annual Fall 50 tomorrow. Took the lopping shears and saw and trimmed some branches back so we can get through a little better with 3 boats. Still we'll have to get a few times and drag the canoes around log jams. We saw and heard lots of birds. Two big beautiful red-tailed hawks swooping and squawking, a couple of huge herons, several deer. It was very nice. We'll probably be too loud tomorrow to see them.

cycling (road/rail trail) 2:00:00 [3] 42.0 km (2:51 / km)

Another bright autumn day. Brilliant blue sky, breezy and pretty warm. Had a nice steady ride up Duffy's then across Castlederg to Centreville Creek, on the rail trai to Caledon East, then up to the top of Innis Lake. There were a fair number of big hills. Back On Finnerty over to Centreville Creek down, down to Castlederg and home on Duffy's again. Colours are getting rusty but it was a gorgeous ride. Lucky to live where we do.
