Saturday Mar 21 #

11 AM

hiking (HVtrail) 4:30:00 [3]

Crisp clear but cold morning at -9. Headed out with an old map of the valley that Phatty used for his "Hellrunner" event a few years ago and set out 12 controls between the tennis courts and the works yard with some clues. That way anyone who is bored and wants to go wander through the valley - mostly off the trail and not near people can get a map from me and do so. I really made it so Mrs. Huet and Elise could do it. My map is rudimentary - as is my course but it's something to do - not in a crowd. Although there were more people on the trail today than I have ever seen in 25 years here! I had a great outing and it did warm up a bit.

12 PM

canoeing (Humber) 1:15:00 [3] 7.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Goose and I were about to head out for a paddle in the very warm temps this morning - just as the skies opened . So we had a latte instead and waited till the cell passed. Then we went for a lovely paddle in the sunshine before the temps dropped. It was pretty windy but down in the valley we were fairly protected. The river wasn't too high but moving steadily. We only had to get out twice and drag the canoe around log jams.

9 AM

trail Run (HVtrail) 1:00:00 [3]

More of a shuffle-jog, some sliding on glassy spots in the woods, and some off-trail bushwhacking. Not a breath of wind this morning and very grey. Watched a muskrat busily nibbling for a while.
1 PM

cycling (road) 1:30:00 [3] 28.0 km (3:13 / km)

Goose wanted to get out on the bikes today as it's supposed to be rainy and windy tomorrow. We rode up Duffy's together and then I peeled off at Mill Lane of Humber Station while he rode up to Patterson. I didn't have it in me. But I had a very nice ride at a civilized pace for early spring riding - for me. Roads were dry and very quiet.

Wednesday Mar 18 #

11 AM

hiking (Albion Hills) 2:00:00 [3]

No more skiing as Highlands was one of the last places open and it got shut down. Met Mrs. Huet for a wander through Albion. The main ski trail is a glacier but the bike single track was fairly clear and dry so we meandered for a couple of hours and saw no one and no wildlife. It was pretty peaceful and a good stress-reliever:)

skate ski (Highlands) 3:05:00 [3] 42.0 km (4:24 / km)

Another bright blue morning and sweet ski conditions. Chanse does such a good grooming job. Goose and I skated for an hour and a half then he went down to switch to classic but I was enjoying the skating and just kept gliding around. Not as rocket fast as yesterday but velvety and easy skiing in the sunshine. Didn't want to stop and face the real world. We were told today that the day programs for Tman are now shut down and we're supposed to limit our visits:(

Sunday Mar 15 #

10 AM

classic ski (Highlands) 1:20:00 [3] 14.0 km (5:43 / km)

Bright blue day, gorgeous sunshine, unsettling Covid19 news all over. But xc skiing was still on:). Met Martha and had a really nice, pretty fast classic ski of the system. Awesome conditions. Like ball-bearings.
2 PM

skate ski (Highlands) 2:30:00 [3] 36.0 km (4:10 / km)

Despite being a spring-like day it never did get above zero and there were a few wet-sugar piles in very sunny warm places but the fast conditions held all day. Went out for a skate with Luke and did a full red loop before he headed down. I continued on my own and it was just so beautiful, and mindless, forgot all about the Corona virus and all the closures and just glided happily on the trails. Didn't want to stop. May be one of the last days as rain is forecast Tues. and we are now not going to visit the Girl in Yellowknife next week:(
