orienteering (Humber Valley) 4:00:00 [3]

It took some strong self-talk to get out the door today - into the blizzard. Of course once I was out there it was ok, quite nice at times in fact with sunny breaks - then the wind would howl, blowing snow in all directions but I was pretty sheltered in the valley. I checked out some of my old controls then traipsed up a big ravine north of the trail and put out several more controls. Not sure for whom, but it doesn't really matter. I'm working on my map reading and thoroughly enjoying spending hours in the woods, up and down steep banks, startling deer etc. I happened upon a pretty nice patch of fiddleheads today so I picked some and steamed them to have with supper tonight:)

Deed: more orienteering flags

cycling (road) 40:00 [3] 14.0 km (2:51 / km)

Lots of gardening early when it was sunny and not too windy - which happened later so the bike ride was short . Didn't have it in me to battle the wind at 5 degrees.

canoeing (Beaver River) 3:00:00 [3] 18.0 km (10:00 / km)

Turned out to be a way nicer weather day than forecast. There was a slightly cool wind off the Bay but on the river it was protected and warm:)
An older couple who retired up near near Highlands decided they were no longer going to be using their nice 17ft. ultralight kevlar flat water canoe, so they wanted to sell it. Not surprisingly Goose was interested so we went up to "test" it. It was an expensive afternoon paddle! Nice boat though. Not sure where we're going to keep it.
We saw a few of the early egrets. all pure white elegance. We watched a big bald eagle on a huge nest - very cool, and lots of muskrats. But no beaver.
Paddled up river from Epping, stopped for a floating lunch and carried on upriver for a while then paddled back down. Saw one group of 3 kayakers but no one else. It was lovely. Then, thinking they may want some pre-made food soon, we dropped off some soup and baked goodies for Hermes and her boys, and Nana. Must've been my spidey senses.

deed: - soup drop off, flowers to Margo, exercises with Susie

trail Run (HVtrail) 1:30:00 [3] 10.0 km (9:00 / km)

The Girl's birthday. Hard to believe she's 24!! We sang to her of course.
Clear bright morning - at minus 1. Good time to go on the trail since the hordes don't tend to go till later, when it's warmer. I had the trail to myself, almost. I ran into former student/athlete and 2-time Olympic rugby player Kelly Russell who was on the trail running with her dogs. I was in the presence of greatness. We had a nice, distant, chat.
I ran up the trail for 1/2 hour, then went trekking/bushwhacking off trail checking on O flags, startling deer and turkeys. It was lovely. Then ran home on the trail again for 1/2 hour. And it was quiet :)

Deed:
- Zoom fitness with my mom

cycling (road) 4:00:00 [3] 81.0 km (2:58 / km)

What a gorgeous day!!! First time it really felt warm even in the wind. And it was again a windy day but just beautiful. Goose and I headed basically northwest into the wind up Humber Station, across hwy.9 and on to 5th line, west to the north side of Island Lake. We saw very little traffic, several other cyclists until we got close to Orangeville. We sat at the edge of the lake in the sunshine and had a picnic then headed south again on the south side of 9 on Heart Lake Road where maybe 3 cars went by. Headed east on Escarpment Rd. with the wind at our backs and a spectacular view. It was such an awesome day. We stopped at a particularly pretty patch of hardwood forest where there was a short trail and went for a wee hike to check out the very happy wild flowers that seemed to all have popped open today: bloodroot, spring beauties, hepatica, trout lilies that were almost inside out and even a few trilliums. Then we continued over to Mountainview and down into Cal. East, stopped for a treat at 4 Corners which was quite busy. People were trying to keep their distance but it looked pretty much like any sunny Sunday afternoon on the rail trail there. We sailed home from there. Great day!
Deed: - got Susie out for walk and called Skyped her nephew in England
