12 PM

cycling (road/rail trail) 1:00:00 [1] 14.0 km (4:17 / km)

Not really a workout but Goose and I did ride all over Collingwood checking out houses.
2 PM

canoeing (Beaver River) 1:20:00 [3] 7.5 km (10:40 / km)

Despite a headache Goose wanted to paddle - thought it might make him feel better. Epping Bridge was a zoo! Just crazy crowded. We drove up to Kimberley and put in there where 2 other groups of 6 were just putting in so it wasn't quiet there either but not nearly so crazy. Once we paddled away from them it was very quiet and lovely. We weren't going hard downriver but we did work harder going back up. Pretty sure the other 2 groups weren't going to finish before dark. Sadly Goose still had a headache so wasn't up to visiting Bash and Bent at the new place. We'll have to get the tour another day.

cycling (Sauble Beach) 14:50:00 [3] 37.0 km (24:03 / km)

Almost a bright sunny day, but still a thin haze and super windy like yesterday, maybe windier.
My mom. sister, Izzy, Goose and I went over to Sauble Beach because Angus had never been and I had only been there once. We had a slow walking tour and walked on the beach where there was no one except a few dog walkers and crazy kite-surfers. They were flying in that wind that was whipping up the lake from the southwest. Flying. Cool to watch.
After that Goose and I stayed and went for a bike ride. Rode to see the Sauble Falls- very pretty. Then on along the river a bit and then east over to Hepworth. Note: Hepworth is not a good destination for a ride if you want a nice latte and snacks - unless you like Tim Hortons because that's all there is there. On the other hand the Suntrail Store is there. So we had a browse and then rode back to Sauble Beach - and that was work riding back into the gale force wind! But clear and beautiful and not cold.
3 PM

canoeing (Sauble River) 1:45:00 [3] 11.0 km (9:33 / km)

We drove up past the falls to a cottage road that crossed the Rankin near where it joins the Sauble and put our canoe in. We tried paddling up the Rankin because we didn't make it very far down yesterday but there were too many big log jams so we turned around and paddled into the Sauble and up river for an hour. Like yesterday, saw no one until the way back near the bridge. It's a lovely river and very quiet, but you can hear hwy.8 just up the bank . Saw lots of blue herons and kingfishers but weirdly hardly any ducks and not a single goose.
The skies darkened just as we finished but I still got another swim in :)

hiking (Bruce Trail) 1:50:00 [3] 8.0 km (13:45 / km)

Visiting my mom, my sister and boyfriend at a cottage in Oxenden (Wiarton). Goose, my sister, the boyfriend Izzy and I drove over to Colpoy's Bay and Hiked a section of the Bruce up along the top of the escarpment i n some very nice woods with periodic lookouts over the bay. Temps at 13-14 were perfect for hiking and the sun was peeking through the trees. A very pleasant outing. And I was warm enough afterward to jump in the bay for 25 strokes - so it counts as a "swim". But it wasn't warm.
2 PM

canoeing (Rankin River) 2:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (10:55 / km)

After lunch Goose and I drove across the base of the peninsula to the wetlands where the Rankin river starts. It was a cool place. Very wide and open marshlands at the source, then a river channel that opens into a shallow reedy lake - Lake Issac. Very high water. It was very reedy and there were lots of waterlilies but it didn't seem weedy. The water was well over the normalshoreline for this time of year and the floodplain which is full of silver maple saplings is flooded like it would be normally in the spring I think. And all the maple sapling are a gorgeous, uniform red, with no red tress up above yet. Kind of odd-looking. It was quite windy - against us as we paddled downriver with not much current but it pushed us along as we paddled back upriver. And the sky was weird all afternoon, a high, high haze. It was sort of sunny but not clear and not cloudy. There was something strangely familiar about it. When we had the news on later I realized why. The western fires are so bad now that there's even ash this far east so the sky is like it was after Mt. St. Helens blew 40 years ago. That was in Washington but the skies in Montana were an eerie hazy orange because so much ash drifted.
Those fires on the west coast are scary.

hiking (Highlands) 1:00:00 [3] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)

Cool but nice sunny late summer day. Feeling much better so Goose and I headed up to Highlands and checked out the new Bruce Trail section that cuts through Highlands from 91, south along the quarry, across the escarpment on and off snowshoe trails, then down to the Wolner House and out to the Dallas Sideroad. We headed back along the 10th from the Wolner House. Then met up with Kelly and Chanse for a short round of 6 "holes" of disc golf in the last of the sunshine. We're not experienced so it was a bit slow and ugly but we had fun for an hour on the the trails.

hiking (HVtrail) 2:10:00 [3] 9.0 km (14:27 / km)

After a rainy mid-morning the skies cleared and it was very warm summery afternoon. I was feeling under the weather yesterday and laid pretty low with a painful earache but felt better today. Didn't move very fast but had a nice hike up the river valley and bushwhacked a bit to check on my orienteering controls from March and all but of the 16 I checked only 1 was missing.
