in backyard park, so freaking humid.. eh..

Thursday Aug 28

Racquetball 45:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 13
after feeling crappy all day due to a dev't of a minor cold, I decided that I could not decline an invitation to play racquetball with a school friend and glad I didn't b/c I felt much better after playing. I'm logging it as half the actual time.
I'm not sure if racquetball is a good training for Oing since it's on hard surface but it's def. a tough work-out that makes you sweat balls. Will be really sore tomorrow and I know Corinne would be jealous right now..:)

Wednesday Aug 27

Running 47:00
shoes: Nike
not feeling 100% today but going out for a run anyway, just couldn't miss out on high mtn park since i was in wayne after work to take care of a mean cat. sore from yest's workout + some ear pains but still worth it :)
R. knee sore from the weekend.

Oh yea! 2+ hrs on this long course, filled with awesome fighting skills through the green patches and through an immeasurable amount of spider webs, coupled with great footwork on the rocky uneven ground..
It would a much better experience if the map was more accurate and reliable but I had to deal with it so compass bearings were in order, no matter how shitty the execution of them was on my part. One major error on #6 as I was drifting up on a bearing, realizing where I am and trying to attack the control from a different angle than originally planned, missing it terribly and very slowly relocating off of two!! trails from both sides of the control. Turns out I overran it on the top part enough to cause a parallel error in the rocky streams. Real bummer b/c despite my slow speed I was navigating through the crap semi decently before. #8 gave me some problem and the rest was just very slow (9-12 on the rocky side slope with very bad footing; 13-14 straight up the hill).
Glad I was out :O

Since we drove 14 hrs to Fundy National Park, I decided to fully enjoy my Oing experience and walk around the middle course for about an hour. Joking aside, there was practically no enjoyment for me on this map and in these very dense woods with rocky ground. Very low visibility could have been tolerable only if the map was good enough to discern all the patches of green in btwn white woods (that way it would have been a decent training for me). Starting from the first control, I couldn't get my head into it but did my best to try to "trust" the map as much as I could and just go from one control to the next, very very slowly. Screwed up #2, hesitating on my location and moving a bit right and further than I had to go. 3 and 4 were Ok, 5 was decent towards the end of the leg but very slow and hesitant in the middle as I was going on the side of a steep reentrant being scared b/c of bear marks going the same way as I was .. Got my way around the rest of the course w/o major problems but very slow. Going to 10, an unmapped green patch across the stream caused me to go up instead of just going on my bearing straight ahead..

Longest write-up to date, lots of complaing but it did make me tougher :)

unplanned test run @ caldwell school track after work, didn't really know how far i would take it but i did feel like doing something of this sort and not intervals so it turned out well. i wasn't going all out but def. pushing it, esp. towards the end.

I finally found a loop in my backyard park!! All thanks to 4RVs! It's not a big loop, more like a lasso type of route close to the river and its incoming streams. Lots and lots of nettle around but fairly dry so no dirty shoes this time. I did get covered in dust from those damn 4RVs (2 passed me flying, 1 stopped) and a motorcycle.
Strength Training 8:00 [1]
feels good to stretch, need to start doing yoga again

Sunday Aug 17

Running warm up/down 6:00 [2]
grabbed orange by mistake at the start and did a small loop in the woods. I now know I'm fit enough to run reds as I had no thought in my mind about just doing an orange course.. next stage is doing orange as a warm-up for red..ye right..

Red Course at Spackman Creek on a nice sunny day. Nice hilly terrain and a well designed course made it a great training for Canada next week. My Oing has improved as well: concentration was good and running through crap was easier than it used to be. I did have one mistake on an easy control (2) b/c I didn't check my compass as I was running downhill. The rest of the course was fine and interesting so it was fun but challanging as well :)

Saturday Aug 16

Running 42:20
shoes: Asics 13
easy track workout with Sergei 10X100m but not timing myself on all of them, low 20s in most, last one 19.6s. Had some stomach discomfort as the fried meat dumplings refused to be digested in proper time.
Strength Training 5:00 [1]

Friday Aug 15

Running 55:30 [2]

Fairly pleasant run to Caldwell park except that my legs disliked the pavement after so much terrain running. Brief rain shower felt nice but was too short.
Strength Training 15:00 [1]
felt really good to stretch + some necessary ankle strength

now you would think I would be sick of Oing by now but nope, i was glad to pick up a harriman map and do another course (in a more leisurely fashion, even stopping to eat some blueberries :). did the same one i set last year for the Ocamp but backwards.

Monday Aug 11

Note
(rest day)
back in the States, desperately needing some rest + sleep. Glad the trip worked out well, I had a great time! Also, no stomach pains throughout this whole trip :)

Last day chase start on same map as yest.; a bit more technical course but also more green. Started in 10th spot. Did fine for the first 3, then started rushing again (it's really hard to calm down when you're running, just have to force myself to stop.) Got slightly lost to 4 straying to the left in the green cliff patches but finding my way to the control once I figured out where I was. Minor wobbles on 7, 9, 11 (the spectator control, so embarrasing b/c I approached from the exiting streamed route so people were running toward me as i was trying to hide my face.. one postive note is that the #11 girl caught me on control 10 and followed me the same one to the spectator control :) That's why I don't follow people. I left her at the water stop going to 12 as I didn't stop to drink or chat about our mishap. Orienteered fine on the second loop with minor mistake on 18 (got confused in the stone walls and green rock piles). 8th best time in D21A and 9th overall for 6 days.

Day 5 on different map with a 1:5000 scale so very detailed in some places but fast as well in the open. Managed Ok, making some minor mistakes on 4,5,7, and a big one on 10 b/c I was rushing again and not navigating properly. 12th today but I really let hte competition thing get to me and seeing people on the same course made it really distracting. Sweden was better in this regard as there were so many people on diff. courses so it wasn't too bothersome.

Wednesday Aug 6

shoes: Puma narabota
Orienteering race 52:33 [4] **** 6 km (8:46 / km) +155m 7:45 / km

Really fast, less technical course today. I regained my composure but still was rushing at times. A minor wobble on 13 trying to get through the green and chaning my mind to go around.. Got 5th place today.

Tuesday Aug 5

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: Puma narabota
Orienteering race 1:28:19 [3] ***** 6 km (14:43 / km) +180m 12:48 / km
shoes: Puma narabota
This course was a total disaster for me: nothing clicked together so I was fighting myself the whole way, starting from control 1 and only regaining something resembling decent orienteering on the last 3 controls but by that time it was useless.
I was upset I did so poorly on such interesting and very technical course but I told myself it was just one of those days so I shouldn't worry too much about it. Def. wantd to rerun this course. 28th place.

Monday Aug 4

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: Puma narabota
Orienteering race 1:02:20 [4] **** 5.9 km (10:34 / km) +175m 9:12 / km
shoes: Puma narabota
Different area but same type of features, a bit more green though. 1:7500 map (as yest.) with the course resembling a longish middle. I did alright, a bit slow and having one mistake on 21 where I didn't execute the route all the way to the control, thus approaching it with some risk and making a loop around a cliff. Same spot as yest; the D20E and H18 are on the same courses as my category and I could def. see them around on my course.

Sunday Aug 3

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]
shoes: Puma narabota
Orienteering race 1:06:08 [4] ***** 6.3 km (10:30 / km) +220m 8:56 / km
shoes: Puma narabota
Since I missed the training yest. I was not prepared well but I also had no expectations so the overall experience of the first day on such awesome terrain turned out pretty well. I made some mistakes towards the end as I was getting tired mentally: complex rock formations mixed in with green patches and very runnable open areas. Had a lot of fun on this course, finished 7th to my suprise but I guess the D21A category is not very competitive.
