Blue Hills Traverse
I approached this as training and that's what it was, a long O-training that gave me some more things to work on. Did not race from the start, went to the road to #1, cutting some forest. Going into the control by following the spur, the woods were much greener than drawn on the map and that threw me off. From then on I didn't trust the map, which #2 reinforced, which the rest of the course reinforced. Felt like a lot of detail was missing but maybe I'm just used to detailed maps. I kept telling myself I should be able to use different tactics depending on the map but somewhat failed at this. Instead of not paying attention to lack of detail as Andis suggested and did (worked for him) I kept saying why is this or that not on the map. Of course, such complaining did not do me good on #5, where missing the stone wall on the way in caused me to lose my place on the side of the hill, and even when I located myself to the upper stone wall I could not find my boulder. Checked lots of other boulders and kept doubting the map and subsequently myself. Wanted to give up at this point as I was the only one searching there but a couple of guys I passed prior showed up and that gave me some confidence that I"m not hopelessly lost, we're lost together, yay!! No, I decided to give in one more try and attacking from the deviant small trail that was there or not there, don't know, but it worked! and I finally united with my boulder and helped those guys along the way. Hit #6, took the road to #7 and in the control circle, again, the map disappointed me and I made a mistake. From then on I sort of settled in to a state of careless orienteering, which would have been a good strategy from the start. Took some gu and that helped me to not fade out at the end. However, last half hour I could feel my knee is not happy going downhill and my it band is tightening up, took it easy. For most of the course my butt was frozen and my legs felt like bricks, couldn't open up my hips at all. Wore gloves the whole time, something I rarely do, even while skiing. Body has not adjusted to the cold yet.
Anyway though, switching to different Oing tactic depending the map should be automatic so that is something to work on. Practice, practice, practice..

Note

Decided against running a 3 k race trial yesterday due to complete lack of speed training in the preceding weeks. I am simply not ready, and my focus right now is to build endurance, so will continue with my tempo runs.
4 PM

Consistent 2:07 for almost all laps, felt decent, the work out is getting easier but this bulky 1 kg garmin watch is def slowing me down, need to get a K-size one
