| Was it ever cold! WAY TOO COLD for me. I think it was about -8C.
Raced w/ Sally in Dexter Michigan. Pre-race involved lots of shopping at Target and Kohls and a yummy bacon cheeseburger. We were dropping off our bikes at 6:15 am and registered by 7:00 am. The crazy thing was that EVERYTHING was outside. There was a tent with tarps at the side, but didn't provide much warmth. We started with a 5-point o-course. Had to run around and get them in any order. Then it was into the canoe. Thank goodness HK let me borrow her wetsuit. Every time a drop of water would land on us (either our jacket or paddle) it would freeze. I wish we had a camera because we were quite a site. Everything was frozen by the time we were done the paddle, I couldn't even open my pack. Hands were froze, toes were okay. Paddle was about 1:15. From here we got on our bikes and got a couple of CP's. Beautiful country roads and it wasn't that windy. I realized at 10 pm the night before that I had forgotten my bike shoes, so I had to do the whole race with my XA pros on spd peddles. The special task was to put our bikes in a canoe and pull ourselves across the river with a fixed rope. We made it safely, but a couple of teams fell in and were instantly out of the race. Biked a little more, then more orienteering. I thought my toes on my left foot were going to fall off at the biking section, they were SO COLD! In this section there were 10 CP's and we had to get at least 3 to be ranked. We ended up getting 9 and then started to head back to our bikes, We didn't want to run out of time and end up unranked. We got back on our bikes and make it back with an hour to spare, turns out we would have had enough time to get all 10....oh well. We ended up finishing 4/14 all female teams. The adventure doesn't end there. We had planned on driving home Sat night after the race b/c it only took us 4 hrs to get there, but we hit a HUGE storm and had to pull over in Tilbury and stay at a B&B. Back on the road at 8 am this morning. Happy to be home safe and sound. | ||
