Not moving well at all, but still nice to be out. On#1 I knew exactly where I was, but still dropped to a nearby control. I said that's way to low, but went there. I hate sloppy thinking and execution. I'm not sure about some routes. 4-5 I heard of an easy trip through the marsh and a couple of bad ones. It is a long way around. I wish more people took splits on Brown, at least with e-punch everyone has them. Many people coming down from the end of the little trail, missed #5 including me. Maybe the trail is shorter than mapped.

Brown - Splits

Saturday Apr 29

Event: US Short and Long Championships

orienteering race 37:13 [2] *** 2.48 km (15:00 / km) +60m 13:23 / km
shoes: Jalas
I guess I'm happy that with my bad back I was able to get around both days, and I don't think I made it worse. But I could barely move. Still a couple of mistakes. On #2 I didn't look at the clue and went to the top of the reentrant first, adding extra climb. Goofed on the route from #8-#9 going down and then back up through the finish--yuck!

Thursday Apr 27

Note
Zapped my back, significantly worse than Mon. but related to the Mon. injury. Hard to bend down, so no yoga, weights or running today.

Same trip, same pains. Feeling heavy and slow. Aggrevated my back yesterday, hoping for a speedy recovery.

Sunday Apr 23

Event: WCOC Five Ponds meet

orienteering 50:00 [2] ***
shoes: Jalas
Another unsuccessful orienteering outing. I'm getting too many of these. Pouring rain, and many many extra water features, cold as well. I knew I shouldn't rely on the blue, but was still too distracted by ponds and streams that shouldn't be there. I decided to come in, not wanting to hurt myself somewhere where no one would look for me. George listed my result as "GWA--got wet anyway."

Friday Apr 21

running 42:32 [3]
shoes: North Face
Continued my 3min run/1min walk on N.Mt. About 30 sec. faster today--23:49 up. Walking breaks were a little shorter coming back, still trying to protect my groins. Powerline and return.

Powerline and return. Once I got to N. Mt. I did 3min run 1min walk. I wasn't able to push it on the run, but it was still better than my recent gingerly runs. 24:20 up. Hoped it would help my groin problem, also did lots of stretching. Hard to take the walks coming back. Not long ago it was 65 deg. and cold, today it was 65 deg. and warm. Both times very windy, but before a cold wind, today a warm wind.

Powerline and return. Sore groins and hips are making it tough to run.

Friday Apr 14

running 48:09 [3]
shoes: North Face
Slow by necessity, things hurt and I'm sore from yesterday's yoga. First run of the year in shorts and T-shirt. There were other warm days, but I didn't run then. Powerline and return. I'd normally be doing some longer runs by now, but until my groins get better, I don't dare. Maybe I can get away with some hiking. We'll see. The deer ate a lot of tulips--bummer. If I grow others I'll probably have to cage them(the tulips, not the deer). The deer like to use the little trail we have that goes up on the mountain. They come towards the river and the farmer's alfafa field, eating whatever I have growing (last yr. they usually waited for something to bloom).

Tuesday Apr 11

running 48:13 [3]
shoes: North Face
Recovery mode run, just trying not to aggrevate anything, mostly successful. Powerline and return. Three birds flushed from a marshy stream bed as I went by--flicker, robin, woodpecker all going in the same direction.
Note
From time to time over the last year I've had some hallucinations at night. Usually I say, oh that's not real, and go back to sleep. The first one last night I did just that. But the second one, I half jumped out of bed trying to swat a multiple of small yellow-orange balls that were jumping on the mattress. I have to open my eyes to "see" these things, so I decided to keep my eyes closed and that was the end of that for the night. Peter suggested that if I didn't watch such weird TV programs, last night Prison Break and 24, I wouldn't have any problems. I'm putting this here for your amusement, and just in case I go mad in the future you all will know when it started.

Sunday Apr 9

orienteering race 1:05:07 [3] *** 4.8 km (13:34 / km) +140m 11:50 / km
shoes: Jalas
2nd day at Wolf's Den, Brown course
Two bad controls, #4 I changed my mind where to leave the trail, knew where I left but then forgot once I'd gone through some mountain laurel. #5 I knew I was going up the wrong stream bed, but didn't correct soon enough and spent too much time hesitating. Nice woods for the most part. Groins kept getting worse. Only finisher on F55 for both days.

Saturday Apr 8

orienteering race 43:34 [2] *** 2.81 km (15:30 / km) +60m 14:01 / km

Wells State Park, Brown Course
Still tired from last weekend. This was an A-meet, but I could never get going, mostly because of the thickesh rocky woods. There was almost always stuff in my face or stuff trying to trip my feet. Mistake on rt. to #4, planned to go up the trail before cutting in, but forgot it was 1:7500 and instead of leaving before a marsh (which was actually deep water) I left after it adding some extra distance. Also checked some other dot knolls near #12 wasting some time getting in and out of the control. It was a cold, raw day. I kept my jacket on which helped in the beginning, but was a little warm later.

Thursday Apr 6

yoga 1:30:00 [1]

running 47:05 [3]

Easy pace though I may have had my watch running while I tied my shoes. Scared up a couple of grouse. Groins still an issue, esp. left one, but I can make it hurt less by running at a funny angle. Powerline and return. I keep wondering when or if I'm going to get Peter's illness.

Tuesday Apr 4

running 48:23 [3]
shoes: North Face
Running in the snowflakes, awh new england weather. Unlike Kissy, everything that has been hurting felt just as bad or worse. Powerline and return.

Sunday Apr 2

orienteering race 1:00:00 [3] ***
shoes: Jalas
Classic Distance, Brown Course at the Pig. Did about 2.4k of a 3.8k course. Bailed before I got to #5. I thought I had gone by it, when in fact I was still short. Decided to head for the road, went away from the control without knowing it to escape the green or I would probably have run into the correct fence. Once I hit the road, I decided I'd had enough fun. I already had lots of encounters with the briars and wasn't ready for more. Also tired from the hilly first part of the course. I didn't pick up my splits, so I'm not sure of the time.
There was some sort of security issue at the airport. The lights flashed, we got an announcement to stay put while they decided if we had to evacuate. After awhile the lights went off, our bags came, and we left.

US Sprint Champs at the Pig. No mistakes, but second to someone I don't know (obviously faster which isn't hard to do). Dry feet until the run in to the finish.
orienteering race 30:45 [4] *** 2.9 km (10:36 / km) +100m 9:03 / km
shoes: Jalas
Yellow leg of the Relay Champs at the Pig for CSU, AA variation. This was the hardest yellow course I've ever seen. I added extra climb between #4-5 which didn't add much time (I think I was 3 sec. slower than Sandy), but cost me more later because of fatigue. Totally wasted on the last climb out of the valley before the spectator control.
