orienteering 1:24:24 [3] **** 5.2 km (16:14 / km) +95m 14:52 / km
shoes: Jalas
NAOC long
Knees bad enough last night that I was thinking of not going out. In the morning they are not as bad, but still don't put on O stuff until in the car on the way when I decide to start, maybe do a few or if I'm lucky finish.
Only one significant error when I left 5 doing a 180. Had the map folded so I couldn't see enough of the map and didn't have a plan for leaving before I came into the control. Only about 100 meters in the wrong direction, but that means 200 meters by the time I'm back and at a walk about 4 min. error.
Mentally distressed after 10 when I seem to get back to the marsh too soon and even though I was sure I checked the code have my doubts. Not sure I punched the right control until I've downloaded.
Walking pace was getting slower and slower by the end. Legs were tired etc. but it wasn't that far out of the way to finish instead of walking in.
Knees very sore esp. the right one. Feels like they will take awhile to recover.
It was really nice to go orienteering! Enjoyed it, even when I was stupid. Managed to fall a few times without hurting my knees. Just not sure how much I'm going to be able to do this. But it was fun being there and talking to friends about my "run".
Finished 2nd north american, 3rd overall F60

NAOC Middle. Again expected this to be flatter than it was. Major mistake to #1. Fine for the first part then getting closer to the control climbed a hill where I shouldn't,then without realizing it started going more north than south. Then went up, down, around etc. before finally realizing I had to go south, that the marsh I was seeing off to the side was not the one I thought it was. Went by a couple of other controls on the now direct line to mine. I figured maybe 10 min. lost, but probably just 8! Saw a guy in cameo with bow and arrows on the way to 3. I said we were ruining his hunting, he said it was okay. Orienteered fine until #9. Thought of taking the trail around which would have been easier, but I'm walking, I think, so might as well go straight. There were other people and I wasn't paying enough attention. Got into the larger reentrant just west of the control but didn't read that correctly and went off further to the north. The hill I misread the first time, read correctly led me to the control. Haven't looked at other's splits, but maybe a 7 min. error. Okay the rest of the way.
Despite those big errors ended up 3rd north american, 4th in F60.
The 2 yr. break in orienteering really showed.
Knees didn't feel too bad when I finished, but kept getting a little worse as the day progressed.
Peter made it possible for me to go out today by driving me to and from the start/finish area. Thanks!

NAOC Sprint. Hadn't planned to go out on the sprint since walking a sprint isn't very satisfying. But I'm there, it isn't raining very hard, so I decide to try just the first sprint. Hillier than I expected ( hills and bad knees not good), but clean except for looking at a control number between 3 and 4. Several waves of starters went past me before I reached my first control.
Spent too much time on my feet standing around before and after.

Hike on sat. was too much for my Left knee. 3rd shot yesterday--the one to the right knee was a killer. Sore all yesterday.

hiking 1:07:30 [2]
About three quarters of the way out on the hike I think I can go further than planned, but then the knee pain gets a little sharper and I decide to be smart and turn around at Gunn. Same thing happened today, but the go a little further voice won out. So went to the power line. Haven't been there in about 2 yrs. Other complaining body parts (left hip, right foot) were drowning out the knee pain by the end. I'll have to see how things recover.

Didn't go to the camping weekend because I didn't want to hang out all day in the rain and get no sleep in the tent. So far, at least here, no rain.
