Running in slop today. Overnight rain and above freezing temps. left slop on the trail--yuck. Cloudy, foggy, dreary day to go with it. Right foot worse today as well. Powerline and return, in and out our back trail.

One of those days that it is warmer the higher up you go. Claybrook, up N.Mt. to the powerline, in our back trail. N. Mt. had been driven, so most of the time it was pleasant running. Only my footprints from Thurs. on our trail, but still easier going.

Claybrook, N.Mt to Gunn (no footprints on last part, very hard work), back out and up Bears Den, back to Claybrook and then in our back trail (again latter part not broked out, but at least it was downhill). New right foot pain--ugh!

| Mostly on roads around town. Up and down one section on N. Mt. that had been driven. Also a section of Middle Mt. that had been snowmobiled. It didn't go all the way through the field towards the town park, so slogged through to the end of the field following deer tracks, out by the green garage. Up N. Mt. again just to add a little time.
Did some snow shovelling to clean up the driveway, but won't log the time. |

Mostly bare often wet ground after the big windy rain storm yesterday. Icy spots I couldn't avoid were very slippery. Even slipped on them when I walked across them on the way back. Powerline and return.

Travel back from San Diego. Up at 3:30am and no sleep last night. Once back legs are getting very sore from unusual Maze activity. Will probably take tomorrow off as well.

Day 2 Brown Cr. Small mistake to #1. #6 was almost to the top of the circle which made my exit a surprise--stopped too long to try to figure out what happened. Very flat, fast course. It helped to pick out distant features when crossing the flat, bland areas.

Afternoon Maze. Mix of walking, running, jumping, crawling, climbing with Rhonda. I got 5 controls, she happily refused one horrible scramble and got 4. We began by running off the map. I measured the distance down the wash correctly. Had we already gone a distance when we started pacing, was the start in the wrong place( Bill was putting it on each map as we started)? I don't know, but I know I wasn't reading the map much until our pace ran out. Of course, I didn't want to go back up the wash, so angled off in a direction that might take us towards a control. Rhonda spotted one and we were off. Seeing them and getting to them were different things altogether. Sometimes I knew where we were, sometimes I didn't, sometimes I thought I knew were we were, but didn't. Good fun, will be good memories.

Day 1, "Buttes Pass," Anza-Borrego. Learned a few things today. Ran by the first control, stopped, scratched my head a few minutes before turning around to see the very top of the control stand. Major mistake was not staying high enough long enough on one leg. Got lower than I realized and went up and down many reentrants I could have avoided. Still managed to do better than most on brown. Foot held up well, but did get a few blisters.
| orienteering race (sprint) 34:11 [4] 2.82 km (12:07 / km) +120m 10:00 / km | |

Sprint (afternoon). Managed to keep running. Made the mistake of wearing my hat. On the ridge line had to hold onto it, made it hard to read the map, look at the compass, avoid the cactus. Glasses also went askew and I couldn't get them back on right. Went up the wrong ridge to #2, but otherwise not bad. Could avoid errors I could see others making in front of me. Fun area, probably good practice for tomorrow.

Walking on model map at Anza-Borrego with Charlie and Rhonda. Several controls were off, hopefully not the case tomorrow. The area was very subtle. It will be hard to run, read the map and not get zapped by the cactus. Even walking one got me. Fun area--haven't orienteered in anything like it. I'll have to careful. I often have trouble estimating distance in wide open areas.

Powerline and return. Footing was better, didn't use yaktraxs. A little icy in places, soft in others. Usual pains esp. right foot and right knee. Saw foot doctor. Signed up for surgery but have over two months to back out. Really don't like the idea.

Powerline and return. No one out ahead of me today. These people should get with the program. Snow and ice coming off the evergreens, and me without my hat. New groin pain maybe from yesterday's yoga. For Peter--found a fat, happy squirrel on the feeder this morning. Removed crusty ice from the baffle, hope we now have a frustrated squirrel.

Jury duty today. Bad chairs = bad back, but got out early enough to get a run in. Powerline and return. Anywhere from no new snow under the biggest evergreens to 6". Someone had gone ahead of me, but the footprints didn't match mine. Still made the going easier. I didn't match my footprints very well on the way back. Many icy, snowy branches to dodge. Broke through once for a wet foot.

I don't usually run two days in a row, but the threat of 6-12" of new snow and high winds got me out. Traction much better, but still had to pay constant attention. Several gun blasts, but they seem to be from across the river. Same distance as yesterday (powerline and return), but 9 min. faster. Also hurt more esp. left hip and right foot.

Okay, Peter thinks this should be part of my( normally non existant) new year's resolution. 2" of new snow on icy trails--being very careful. Fortunately someone had walked up before me and I could see many slips. Afterward Peter wanted to know if any of those splats were mine, but I stayed upright. Wore yaktraxs but snowballs under them made for dicy traction. Powerline and return, in and out backtrail. Usual pains--R ft., R knee, L hip.
