Monday Jul 31

running 54:14 [3]
shoes: North Face
Powerline and return. I thought I was moving well, but the first time check was the slowest yet since we got back. So I've decided I'm happy I got out for some exercise.

Friday Jul 28

running 57:34 [3]
shoes: NF #2
A plodding trip up and back to the powerline. About 2 min. slower up, and 1 slower down. Feeling nauseous from running too soon after breakfast and taking an excedrin, but a line of storms was near (tho died out before getting here). I think Peter passed on his FDFs as we crossed paths. I gave them a slower target.

Wednesday Jul 26

running 54:00 [3]
shoes: NF #2
Jog up to the powerline and back. Not too bad going up, although I'm not at all use to the humidity. Almost the same time coming back which means way slow. Rounding a bend in the trail above Gunn I saw a bear running off from a stream that was right next to the trail. It didn't go far before stopping, but I figured it was better to keep moving rather than stop for a look. Fortunately it wasn't there when I returned. Saw another strange creature twice--old guy with a walking stick, big black trash bag, can of bug spray, weird hat, suspenders, and a camelback ( and before anyone says anything, it wasn't Peter).
Note
After my jog I took hundreds of caterpillers off the hugh mugo pine--yuck. Even with a ladder I couldn't reach them all. The plant may need to go, but taking it out will not be easy either. (I think the caterpillers turn into a small wasp which act like FDFs.)

Saturday Jul 22

orienteering race 53:08 [4] *** 3.6 km (14:46 / km) +110m 12:48 / km
shoes: Jalas
Day 6 "Sunnegga" Did the first few controls well, then hesitation right near the control on #5, a little too high on #6, first on the wrong trail near #7 and should have stayed on the trail longer to #11 instead of crossing a steep slope. Finished 22nd/90 for the day and 20th overall for the best 5 out of 6 days.

Friday Jul 21

orienteering race 54:54 [3] *** 2.88 km (19:04 / km) +140m 15:20 / km
shoes: NB 907
Day 5 "Zermatt" This was the so called sprint-middle day. The 50's were supposed to have this course, instead we got theirs and they got the shorter course (2.3 and 80m). Two bad controls. #7 I was in the right place the first attempt, but looked right instead of left and didn't see the control tucked between two little buildings. Looked in all the other nearby alleys before coming back. And after #11, I completely lost focus, leaving the control in the wrong direction, and took forever to admit I was way off and to stop!!! Finished 44th/90. This was my throw out day.

Thursday Jul 20

orienteering race 1:06:38 [4] *** 4.24 km (15:43 / km) +250m 12:08 / km
shoes: Jalas
Day 4 "Schwarzsee" One largish error to #2, was too sure were I crossed the trail, but was off and spent time on one spur too soon. Other small errors and hesitations and there were lots and lots of controls near each other. On #9 I turned the wrong way first before going back by the first control to mine. Finished 25th/90. After 4 days I was in 13th overall, but not such good days to come, and others got to drop earlier bad days so I didn't finish so high in the standings.

Wednesday Jul 19

walking at altitude 45:00 [2]
shoes: NB 907
Rest Day. Took the lift up that we were going to take the final day.Sunnegga, Blauherd, and then Unterrothorn. Walked a bit at the top looking at all the peaks, another glorious morning, no clouds, but starting to build, hidding part of Monta Rosa by the time I went down. Getting off the first lift, I followed the crowd and found myself walking down towards Sunnegga. Didn't have a map and worried that it was too far to walk on my bruised heel, I went back up to the lift when I had the chance. I had probably already walked half of it.

Tuesday Jul 18

orienteering race 59:16 [4] *** 4.1 km (14:27 / km) +180m 11:51 / km
shoes: Jalas
Day 3 "Trockener Steg" No major problems. Got a stone in my shoe leaving #1 and thought it would be too hard to take it out, so ran on my toes. Ended up with a bruised heel and a very sore calf. On the way to #2 went higher than I planned to cross a brook as I it looked like it was moving too fast to be safe, but crossed it later lower down and it was fine.Fun course, but suffered on the uphill at the end when they took us higher than necessary. Finished tied for 18th / 90. Afterwards we took the lift up the Klein Matterhorn. We got in line with Sandra and Ross. After taking the elevator to the viewing platform, we climbed the stairs and immediately got in the long lines to go back down. Absolutely beautiful.

Monday Jul 17

orienteering race 49:54 [4] *** 2.9 km (17:12 / km) +170m 13:18 / km
shoes: Jalas
Day 2, "Grunsee-Riffelalp" A really dumb mistake out of the start. Almost everyone went left out of the start. I was supposed to go right, 180 different. Looked okay since there weren't many north marks and I was going to #1 which looks okay upside down. By the time I realized my mistake and returned to the start 2:30min had elapsed and I was very tired for the uphill legs to come. Also went past #8 which was an easy control after the railway crossing. Finished 32 out of 90.

Sunday Jul 16

orienteering race 43:31 [3] *** 3.9 km (11:09 / km) +70m 10:14 / km
shoes: Jalas
Day 1 Swiss Orienteering Week based in Zermatt. "Gornergrat-Riffelberg" This turned out to be may best day. Finishing 11th out of 90 in D55. Hesitating a bunch to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong, but missed no controls. Got a little too high on the way to #1 in the scree and could have avoided more of it had I gone lower. I tend to do better on downhill courses like this, as my climbing ability has decreased a lot over the years.

Friday Jul 14

walking at altitude 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: NB 907
Took a lift above Saas Fee to 2448 meters. Then climbed up about 750 ft. and back down. Fed a marmot a few nuts, one of the allowed foods (carrots, apples, or nuts). It took them out of my hand, felt its teeth and fur. Pretty cool. It is hard to believe that it is okay as part of a protection area for the marmots.

Thursday Jul 13

walking at altitude 1:40:00 [2]
shoes: NB 907
Above Saas Grund. Took a lift up to about 10,000 ft and walked around for about 30 mins. Felt any uphill immediately. Then down to the middle station, maybe 6000 ft and walked for about an hour. Then we drove to the end of the valley and walked up to dam and back to the parking, maybe 10 min. It rained at the end on the time at the middle station, otherwise a nice day.

Tuesday Jul 11

orienteering race 58:56 [3] *** 3.23 km (18:15 / km) +90m 16:01 / km
shoes: Jalas
"Grosse Scheidegg" near Grindelwald. Beautiful day. I had about an hour to take in the scenery before my start which we weren't assigned until we got there via bus. I just about killed myself on the way to #1 by going in the white woods. White woods meant many rocks, big boulders, deep holes, none of which were mapped, and in this case was very steep. Got confused on the way to #3 by the difference between yellow, and semi-open as I felt I was in a very open spot and it was mapped as almost white -yellow. Placing was much better, finishing 6th.

Sunday Jul 9

orienteering race 1:14:21 [3] *** 3.78 km (19:40 / km) +130m 16:47 / km
shoes: Jalas
"Drusetschawald-Seehornwald" Davos. Not a very good run. Two bad controls. Sharon had mentioned some bad rock areas, so I went high to #1 to avoid some of it, but I should have gone straight as there were tracks by the time I went out. Got even higher than I wanted and visited my #8, but then I knew exactly where I was. Managed to miss #8 on the way back because I felt I knew where it was. Oh, well. The going was very physical and I felt a bit trashed at the end. But the day was beautiful and Peter figured out a way to drop me off so I didn't have to walk 3k each way. Thanks Peter! Placed about half way down maybe 16th or 17th.

Wednesday Jul 5

orienteering race 53:49 [3] *** 3.87 km (13:54 / km) +85m 12:32 / km
shoes: Jalas
Again good in the beginning. Held it together longer this time, but still a couple of mistakes. One getting on the wrong little trail, and the other misreading the slope, so I went way, way down and then way, way back upugh. Havent seen the full results as my class went out very late and not all the times were posted when we left. We think I ended up 17th and if that is true, then I made the A final. Not running for the last month or so has definitely made me slower. Foot has not been good on this trip, but probably a little better for todays run.
C • Good Luck 1

Tuesday Jul 4

orienteering race 50:30 [3] *** 3.7 km (13:39 / km) +105m 11:57 / km
shoes: Jalas
Day 1 qualifier WMOC. Not a great run. Good in the beginning, I was the last starter in my group. Later someone I think was in my heat came by and I found that distracted me. So a little too flaky at the end. Still was 16th in the heat, top 20 qualify for the A final.
