NZ Cross Country Champs - Halswell Quarry

6x 2km laps - same course as Canterbury Champs...course was a bit drier and weather was fairly similar cold and some occasional spitting rain.

Didnt have much of a plan other than to start out with the lead bunch and see where to from there...

Didnt take long for the pack to converge and I managed to get myself smack bang in the middle. Felt a bit strangled with nowhere to go then a big gap opened up down the side, which I managed to slot into nicely! So I took a little hiway to the front pack and stuck with them up to the top of the first corner...then going downhill I was at maximum speed, but I was still passed by a whole heap of people! I guess most of them had a bit of biomechanical advantage over me. I was pretty cool fun though running fast in close proximity to a whole bunch of others moving fast too!

After that I settled down to a pace which I could manage...although I quickly paid for it and on the second lap I was running a little bit tense and the stitch was begining to come on...eventually as I started to move backwards in the field but thankfully I managed to make myself relax and I got back into it and started to pull back a place then I teamed up with an Auckland guy and we pushed each other through the remaining laps. We managed to pull in a couple of people in.

I finished quite strongly but the Auckland guy was a just a bit faster and had me right where he wanted me...Managed to take almost two minutes off my Canterbury Cross Country time which was on the same course, but I still was probably almost 500m-1km behind the winner. Finished in 25th place, 5th Canterbury rep and beat both 2nd place winners from the Canterbury and South Island champs!
