WOC Middle Distance Qualification - Heat B
No big navigation mistakes. Potentially ran too slow to begin with and was just over cautious. Got faster and more into the race after about the 4th control.
Course was actually a little bit on the easy side...hence qualification was more difficult...
The 19min pre-start jog was painfully long but I managed to keep myself reasonably calm and it was actually a bit f a relief to finally start!
First control, flipped the map over at the start quickly slotted behind the two others as I worked out where to start triangle was and where I was going to go for Number 1. Quickly took the left option and the track at the first instance. Got a little bit confused by the white depression that was more like semi-open land and cautiously entered the forest. I hesitantly found the control and very carefully sorted exit direction and route to the next control. Lost contact a little bit but quickly reconnected but ended up to far to the right. I stopped on the rocks to confirm my location then ran towards the control... I came down too far along the spur and had to go back up to the cliff the control was on.
3rd Control I didn't have an exit plan sorted and just headed directly across the green to the nearest track then out and along the main track. I completely missed the easy way out to the track.... I hesitated at the junction then decided to go further and come into the control on another track. A safer route but a less fast route I think.
Next control was straight along a series of complicated tracks however at the end of the depression I kind of hesitated trying to figure out what was going on...(quite a few others had trouble here too) I sorted it out of the open patch of land and eventually made it into the control.
The long leg I quickly got out to the main track running parallel to the red line but was caught by and Estonian guy who I jumped on the back of for a while. Once at the track I went with him and bumbled about in the green when I should have stopped sorted myself out and ran my own way....however I took a really safe route wide swinging into the control and spiking it. Looking at the splits this was a complete waste of time and I should have just gone pretty much straight...The track was a huge catching feature and I was unlikely to miss it and the control.
Next I took the track to the road then the other track up into the control and nailed it. From here I ran through the open land and depression but somehow did not climb high enough and got caught in a fallen tree and had to go up into the control...
Out to the road and along the road before missing the nice white forest and going up the ugly open stuff to the Camera control! Should have been planning the next lot of controls but kind of forgot. The next control was straight forward round and up and in...not sure how I lost time here but I appeared just to be running too slow...
Last long leg I definitely took the fast girls route along the track to the left but it was not fast enough for the guys as it turns out. I should have gone along the tops of the hills and down the spur.
Nailed the second last control and then it was all track running in from there.
Satisfied with the run but a little disappointed that I was not more aggressive...however had I been more aggressive I may have made more mistakes...I guess I anticipated that it was going to be hard and ran cautiously under the premise that to qualify I needed to be accurate. Really it came down to which tracks you ran on and how fast you ran.
