Mourne Mountain Marathon Day 1

Pack weight ~5.5kg.
Had good kit, and a small bag, but packed too much food, and not ideal dinner food at that...

Bit of a nightmare from a technical point of view on day 1. In all my past mountain marathons I've found the navigation generally very easy, and arguably didn't give the course enough respect today.

Quick breakdown of technical time-losses:

#2 - 3mins; in our haphazardness made a mess of leaving 1, searching for another control nearby for some reason.

#5 - 2-3mins (at least); should have dropped immediately to brandy pad, instead went up comedagh intending on running the wall, which would have been fine. But stayed on the wrong side of the wall going downhill which was pure grass and in the wet conditions we got savaged, took 3-4 big tumbles each, cut the whole back of my leg. We walked a good bit of this descent from here.

#6 - 5mins; will have lost a bit of time marking in the final cluster here, but that's not a time-loss. More importantly we missed the path going from the mourne wall contouring the hill to meet the wall again. Instead dropped down, and climbed up through terrain, watching a few teams we had just passed get a solid gap on us.

#9 - 10mins; my bad. Thought we were now on the long leg to far cluster, and completely forgot 9. Convinced Laurence to hit the track on a really wide route, fortunately he knew we still had to get 9 and caught us, but it was an awful route going 200% of the straight line.

#10 - 6-7mins; faff central trying to locate the "faint track". I'd marked it both low & high, and wasn't confident enough / wanting to climb the whole way up in case it was low.

#13 - 25mins; the kicker. Marked the last control one box wrong on the grid references. Left 12 north and downhill in terrain, instead of south and contouring on a track. Got to where we marked it, didn't make sense, realised somehow. I don't even know how Laurence clicked it. Anyway, trudged back up the hill, hit it and ran home.

Some more notes on general race to come.
