ROC Black Creek score event. I went out knowing this wasn't likely to be a lot of fun; a warm day (84F, dp 58F), a map I knew from running on the trails is thickly vegetated as far as the eye can see (not very far when the leaves are on), but it's a map I hadn't collected through being away from town last time it was used a year ago. So, out I went, and through the scrub I went, searching around the unmapped bushes and pushing through the much-thicker-than-mapped scrub and across the almost-impassable-but-not-quite marshes, and wandering around the circle looking for the almost-but-not-quite-correctly-mapped fence posts in the middle of thickets. (There aren't any other usable features off trails for the most part.) Really, this may have been the least fun I've had orienteering in a forest (urban sprints are worse) ever. Only the fun of running through almost-impassable-but-not-quite marshes made it almost worthwhile.

To be clear, I'm not blaming the course setter; this forest is what it is, and there is no way to set an interesting and enjoyable course there, in my opinion. I'd like to say thanks to him for his effort in trying to do so. However, it is a place I will only be running on trails in the future ;) .

Incidentally, maybe somebody can explain to me why local events start at times like 1pm on days when it is in the mid 80s. What would be wrong with a 10am start, exactly? There are only three things I can think of; one is religious commitments and the second is kids' organized sports. These are hard to do anything about. The alternative, that I hope is not the reason, is that we pick the same start time all year round for simplicity, and the early afternoon is nicer in March and November. If that was the case, maybe we could start at 10am at weekend events May-September?

Collecting controls. Stuck to the trails; more fun (and better speed despite just jogging and stopping to untie 14 control flags...).
For some reason the deer flies were out - either my increasing odor or the later timing being the likely reason, I suppose.

Evening (6:50pm) at Ellison Wetlands. Gorgeous evening again (74F, dp 49F, clear, still, not even any mosquitos out when I was stretching on the bridge at Old Browncroft). Quiet; dry trails with just the right amount of give after Thursday's rain, a few herons out, the places with nettles mowed, a deer or two, a few birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, and the running felt very good - an excellent session. No discomfort in the arches or plantar fascia, despite really hammering some of the downhills quite hard (to the extent this wasn't just a cruisy run, this was the point of the session). Really, despite the fact it sets up a work day much better to run in the morning, I think I had better switch back to early evening running; my body just is much happier about running then.

Alternatively, I suppose it could be seen as a brain/legs tradeoff. They can't both get allocated the best time of the day.

Friday Jul 4

Bike 1:24:00 [3] 21.8 mi (3:51 / mi)
shoes: shimano m-180b
Greece Canal Park. Gorgeous afternoon; mostly sunny with some thin clouds occasionally stopping it being too glaring; still, not at all humid (73F, dp 46F (!)). Hybrid bike. The gears on this thing are not too great; even though it was adjusted recently, the chain still came off when I shifted down going up a hill near the end, and it has difficulty getting into the topmost gear on the rear cog. For $300 it's ok, I guess.

Cobbs Hill. Overcast, 73F, dp 59F. I'm starting to worry a little about my left plantar fascia, which are sore when not running. I may need to switch back to running in the afternoon (I have a theory this helps because you are more flexible after being awake all day.)
