Sunday Jul 6

Note
slept:8.5 (injured) (rest day)
Drove to Northfield, MN today.

Had planned to leave earlier but I was just too tired to finish packing last night so slept til 7:30, finished packing and left about noon.

Threaded through some big t-storms in northern Iowa. Saw lots of really cool lightning, missed the heavy rain which was good.

Saw some disappointing human behavior.... young child in the gas station mini-mart wants a piece of candy, mom says no, kid starts crying. Mom gets mad, smacks the kid a couple times, kid cries more, mom starts yelling at the kid to stop crying, yells at kid all the way out to the car.... why do people think it's acceptable to treat their kids that way?

Friday Jul 4

Note
slept:8.5 (injured)
New mattress set delivered this morning: tempurpedic delux. Smells like I just painted the room.

Neighbors car horn shorted this morning starting around 8. Nobody home, car doors locked. Intermittantly off and on for about 2 hours and then on for good starting about 10. House keeper showed up about 10:15 and gave us the keys.

After getting into the car and failing to silence the horn, the next thoughts were to pull the fuse for the horn or disconnect the batttery. Not so simple.
A fine example of American auto engineering prowess the Pontiac Sunbird(?) is not. 1. The battery is buried beneath the windshield wiper fluid tank. Need to remove the tank to get to it. 2. The electrical boxes, there are two of them, are both pinned beneath frame support struts. Can't open either without removing the frame supports.

In frustration, somebody slammed one of the car doors. The horn shut off. So far, it's stayed off.

Cycling (MTB on the road) 1:49:00 [2]

Grant's Trail with L.

Thursday Jul 3

Note
slept:6.0 weight:163lbs (injured) (rest day)
Spent the day in Malden, MO; down in the boot heel, getting a tour of the local community and surrounding farm land. (My mom has some property there.) Learned a lot about farming soy beans, corn, winter wheat, purple-hulled peas, irrigation, etc.

For instance: one of the big pivot irrigators costs about $1000 per acre to install. Farmers really don't like power lines; the poles get in the way of just about everything to do with planting, irrigating, and harvesting.

It's bizarre how the soil changes from very sandy to very heavy and fertile from field to field, even within a field. Some of the fields looked like beaches the sand was so pure and clean.

Wednesday Jul 2

Cycling (MTB on the road) 1:10:00 [3] 16.0 mi (4:22 / mi)
(injured) shoes: Cake 2 DLX
Tour of Kirkwood and Webster. Distance is a guess, bike computer died on the way home from work on Monday.

Doc says no running for another 2 weeks. Cycling is ok.
C • SLOC Forest Park meet 8
Cycling (Trail) 1:30:00 [4]
shoes: Cake 2 DLX
Castlewood.

A bit warm, but as long as you kept moving, it wasn't bad. Trails were in great shape. Rode Roller Coaster backwards (missed the trail head) and then forwards. That's a great section of fast single track, maybe the best I've been on.

Didn't go down to the river, so don't know if it's as high as it was.... the flies and gnats were a good disincentive to stay away.
Walking 30:00 [1]
shoes: Teva
Walked to Bread Co for some lunch after dropping the car at the repair shop. I love their baked potato soup, even on a warm day.

Tuesday Jul 1

Walking 40:00 [1]
slept:6.5 (injured)
Another lunch-time walk.

Last day at Maritz.

Heel isn't quite as painful today. promising, I hope.

Woke at 2AM last night and had trouble going back to sleep. Felt like I was tossing and turning all night with weird dreams. Tired today.

Legs feel good today after yesterdays rides.
Strength (Planks/Bridges/-ups/wghts) 1:00:00 [2]
Walking (Evening Walk) 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
