Saturday Sep 6

Run 2:00:00 [3]
Trail run with Karl at Lake Grapevine. Legs solid, which makes for a happy Tom. Jumped in the lake afterwards.

Thursday Sep 4

Run 57:00 [3]
Ball field fartleks.

6 (strides) then 2 (hard around the outfield, rest a bit, hard around the infield) then 2 (hard around the circumference of the football field, easy around the field). Moving quite well. Good energy.

But then the energy ran out about 50 min into my 8 am class when I got weak and spacey. Of course, the students are all half asleep so they didn't notice.

Row 35:00 [3]
Drills at the catch and finish. Shoulder and back were feeling ok but now they're not. Darn it!

Wednesday Sep 3

Erg 55:00 [3]
4 (5min h + 3 min 3)

Gustav wind and rain blew me on to the landboat. Decent workout. On the hard intervals I kept the SR at 31-33. For the first three my pace was 1:55-2:00 / 500m, while on the last one I stepped it up a bit and kept it in the range 1:51-1:53.

1: HR: M=154, A=143, E=152
2: HR: M=156, A=147, E=156
3: HR: M=165, A=154, E=162
4: HR: M=171, A=159, E=170
Run 33:00 [3]
9755 simulated controls to go.

Tuesday Sep 2

Run 55:00 [3]
Ran down the KATY trail and shuffled back up to school.

I have millions of little tick welts. Not as many as Lisa, but still millions. I'm not a happy camper.

Monday Sep 1

Erg 50:00 [3]
My right shoulder and arm are still very much out of whack. Thus, I opted for the land-boat with the hope that this wouldn't be as stressful. The theory is that I tend to overreach and lose good posture at the catch and, hence, cause the shoulder strain. This is easier to monitor and prevent on the land-boat, I hope. It feels ok now, post workout -- we'll see later in the day.

It is much more fun now that the club has its set of ergs at the new boathouse. I wheeled the land-boat outside and in the shade, where I could watch the goings on at the lake. Lisa has updated the play list on her nano such that I could feel a little bit more manly, that is, until the 45th minute when I started to "feel like a woman" again. I'm going to go get my own Ipod shuffle later today to avoid this from happening in the future.

Kept the SR at 24-26 for the first 30 then raised it to 26-29 for the last 20. Covered a bit over 11km.

Note
NFL news: TO has been traded from the Cowboys in exchange for the Giants' Amani Toomer. Unfortunately, Toomer will not see action for a few weeks due to a broken foot. Team doctors most certainly expect that he will be active by the end of the season's game with Kansas City.

Bike 56:00 [3]
Spin around the lake in the evenings. Many picnicers still at it. Gustov clouds and winds moving in.

Sunday Aug 31

Orienteering 1:32:00 [3]
Cuivre River. And old training course of Eric's, where we focused on pace change. Long legs of 500-800m, mostly on trails, were separated by series of short legs in detailed areas. The idea was to push on the trail and then work on regaining composure and accuracy in the detailed areas. Overall, I did very well with solid map contact and good control over the pace. However, I had a lot of head chatter creep in on the long legs and it was a real challenge to tune it out in the detailed areas. I give myself credit for the fact that I recognized it and worked to correct it each time. I had one major (5min) error on the last long leg after I left the trail; I didn't listened to my compass and got way off track, while my eyes were tricked by the veg.

Spent some time on the long legs thinking about Tero G's idea that he gives himself mental-break periods during races. I've been skeptical of the need for this. However, I found a sense in which this idea may be useful to me. I used the long legs to "relax" and "take a deep breath." Not literally because I still ran with effort. But I reminded myself to release tension in my mind and body.

Afterwards we cooled off at the park's little swimming beach. It was a very pretty spot and it felt great! Then we went for pizza in Troy and discussed why everyone else does things wrong.

It was a really great weekend! Thanks to the Barretts, Spike, Maprunner, Ricka, two friends from Tucson, Josh, disorienteer, Dan from Alabama, and ebuckley for a great time.

An extra special thanks to ebuckley, Kate, Olivia and Lucy for being such generous hosts. And a double extra special thinks to Olivia for sharing her dad with us.
