Does this event conflict with the Hudson Highlander? The calendar on the HVO website suggests it does. Anyone from the HVO organizing team want to comment? (for example, will there actually be a Highlander this year? and is this the date?)

GlenT:
Paul Bennett ("Highlander" on AP) has logged that he is streamering sites for the Highlander (July 8 and 15 entries), so it's certainly being planned.

A reminder to anyone thinking about going to this: the 'super special early bird' closing date for this is today (Aug 7). All three events for (CAD) $40 for adults / $23 for juniors (after a $10/$7 cash rebate). The web site indicates prices will be $50/$30 from tomorrow through Sep 4 (ie same price without the rebate), then $60/$38 from Sep 5 through Oct 2.

Nick, Care to comment on the terrain type. Is the sprint urban or forested or a mix?
Sep 4, 2007 8:55 PM #
Nick:
terrain ?? . nice and technical. we made the medium dist map at 1:7500 with 3 m contours. sprint (park/forest-conservation area. not as nice as last year but challenging ).
long ? well an old map was there in mid eighties, with a good mixture between very detailed, some green , some trails and some hills.. as per Per F .." we just have to wait and see "

Nick:
the early bird registration fee it will be extended for few more days( most likely till this Sunday evening), since our site was not available for few days in late August

Anyone knows why Ontario champs is not listed under upcoming events ?
Sep 11, 2007 12:11 AM #
boyle:
The other events in that list have more than 13 interested individuals?
Sep 11, 2007 1:54 AM #
Bash:
The Adventure Racing Poland Championship only has 1 interested individual, so that can't be it. It's on the long list of Upcoming Events, but not on the home page.

Ken ?

I think what shows on the home page under upcoming events are the top events under a weighting scheme involving
- time to event
- importance
- number of participants
( - maybe also nearness to you.)
And so I guess the Ontario champs is being outweighed by the events with more registrants on that weekend or the much larger (35 participant) event on in CA the following weekend. It'll show up soon (eg when the Sep 22 and Sep 24 events drop off the list).

But I didn't write the algorithm, so Ken can tell you for sure.

I think it's 15+ people or IOF/WRE.  it used to be more complicated, but that was making things slow.

I'd like to congratulate Waterloo Stars on this event. I was very much in two minds between going to this event and driving to the Highlander, and I still don't know which was the best option... The long was probably the best course I've run this year (although I should qualify this by saying I've been to relatively few A meets this year). Excellent setting, a nice map, and physically tough (warm - low 70s F, and extremely humid). (Winner in long was Wil Smith, followed by Mark Adams and Hans Fransson me; I had two 3-4 minute errors, so I'm not saying this because I won, since I didn't.)

In addition, the sprint was just fine (in M Elite, a tie between Hans and me for first, I believe, though I haven't seen official results and this is therefore hearsay [edit: oops, no, Margus Hallik won by 16 seconds]). And the middle was commandingly won by Wil.

Just a shame that so few people came.

The Waterloo Stars are the best new club in North America. In just one year since their birth following last year's COCs they have hosted many training sessions, an adventure run, a ski-O, fundraising events and now the Ontario Champs. They have produced several new maps and had representation at the World Champs too. Oh yeah and they remain the pre race favourites for the Raid the Hammer. Congrats Nick and Co. and keep up the great work (sorry I couldn't join you this weekend).

I would like to add my thanks to Nick and Company for all the work they put in to organizing and running the Ontario Champs. Three events in three different areas in two days - that is no easy task.
Thanks to Waterloo for bringing us back to an area that hasn't been used for orienteering in over 20 years.
It was great to see grey haired Mark Adams near the top of the elite race the way he was 30 years ago and most years since.
As for the real old timers that Mike Minium of Cincinnati seems to be running faster than ever - at least by the way he blew by me near the finish of the classic race. Look out PG!

Great meet! The courses were excellent. I can't say as much for the heat and humidity, though. Thanks for the compliment, Gord. Seeing you ahead of me going to that last control and hearing footsteps behind me was a real motivator! I think PG is safe for the moment.

Results for the event are now up. They will be considered preliminary for a few days at least until everyone is happy. I think there are couple of things still to fix.

See http://stars.kw.net/results/20071006

Thanks for coming everyone! Hope you had fun. Any complaints, talk to Nick :-)
